The Kalevala is the epic national poem of Finland. Compiled by Elias Lönnrot from folk poetry from throughout Finland, Karelia, Estonia, and what is now northwest Russia, the Kalevala describes the worldview of the Finnish people from ancient times through to the modern day. It includes the adventures of Väinämöinen and Joukahainen, Ilmarinen and Lemminkäinen, from the distant lands of Pohjola, to Kalevala's wide heathlands.

In this episode we cover Rígsþula, or the Lay of Rig, from the Poetic Edda of Norse Mythology. We hear how Heimdall, going by Rig, visits 3 couples representing the classes of slaves, free men, and lords, and helps them to reproduce. Their divine children illustrate how the classes of men in the viking age would have lived, and we see how society would have developed from agricultural tribes to thriving kingdoms.

Our good friend Noah Tetzner from the History of Vikings podcast joins us for the second time on the anniversary of his podcast! We talk about some of his favorite experiences from his first year of podcasting, including visiting the Jorvik Viking Festival in York, UK. Noah has recently published a book, The Poetic Edda: A Study Guide. We'll provide a link below.
We had a problem with our end of the audio which we only discovered after the interview. We did our best to fix it up but it's still a little off. Fortunately Noah talks more than we do in this interview, and we hope you bear with us because it was a good chat regardless.

The Poetic Edda is the primary original source for the myths and legends of Norse Mythology. The Poetic Edda includes everything from the creation of the world to its destruction in Ragnarok, from the adventures of Thor to the wisdom of Odin. We are exploring these timeless stories to learn how the Norse people understood the world, and how we can apply their worldview to life today.

Yeah. Rape is bad. We get it. You don't need to spend 20 minutes repeating it like you're on trial. Chill.
Glad you guys are back!
Pretty good podcast, I wish they didn't quote Jordan Peterson and other reactionaries so much, and also make statements that a very much kinda rapey. Like, they do it a lot which is super icky.
I appreciate much of the analysis but boy these guys have very dodgy politics and a very poor understanding of present day cultural, social, political and psychological issues. sometimes listening to them makes my ears feel.dirty. But I reassure my self that in the pursuit of Wisedom I as Odin need to also have wolves as pets ravens as aides and a world ending trickster as a best friend. But it does leave me feeling unclean. Pod cast could do with editing (a lot) certainly do not need the self reverential back slapping of how long they have wafled on for today. Having said all that I am still listening.
7 minutes in before I hear actual content isn't a great thing
Additionally, every good comparative religion scholar knows it is really important to put all you study into cultural context. This is becoming a bit frustrating.
"The world doesn't care..." Maybe. But as humans we can evolve and decide that things like rape, slavery and disenfranchising whole sections of population doesn't serve us. Y'all speak from a very safe place and it shows.
Trickle Down economics presupposes a certain level of altruism in the very rich; otherwise it doesn't work. When people discuss the 1%, they rarely are speaking world wide. That is normally a reference to the USA. Have you ever been in a through world country where folk are living with open sewer trenches, no electricity or running water? I have. It looks (and smells) so much like hundreds of years ago it is a challenge to place it in this time. I doubt those folk believe they are so much better off today.
Do you think the verse about inhospitable hosts may be speaking of those who take advantage of you? People who want to go to dinner with you if you always pick up the check, for example.
In many Native American cultures, Ravens began as an all white bird with a beautiful singing voice. The world was without fire, and Raven could see the naked humans were cold and would die. So Raven decided to fly up to Creator and bring fire down to mankind- knowing that it would burn his plumage and ruin his voice. Because of Raven's sacrifice, he is now all black with a hoarse voice. But Creator, recognizing the selflessness of Raven, did not allow the fire to kill Raven. Instead, Raven is now seen as a messenger of Creator- able to fly up to Creator and then "land on the ground" (making the message easy to understand) to tell the people. Many seers, shaman and prophets have Raven as totems.
Solomon from the Bible is another example of a father figure pursuing wisdom throughout his life, I believe.
I had a thought as I was listening to the part of Tyr and Fenris in episode three. Tyr's actions against Fenris constitute what is probably his greatest wrong. Tyr knew that his right hand was the cost of binding the wolf, but even if that was the right thing to do, it was gone about the wrong way. As a god of Justice he has gone against his intrinsic nature in an ultimate way by betraying his friend. Were Tyr to have held to his just nature, Ragnarok may have been averted entirely.
just listened to the first episode. loved it.
Absolutely fascinating analysis of the Old Norse myth cycle. These guys need to write a book! Highly recommended!
