Description

We’re losing the illusion that we live in a classless country. But it remains a deeply uncomfortable subject for some and most of the talking about class is been done by people who benefit from the status quo: middle class, private school and tertiary educated. That is, THE AUSTRALIAN MEDIA. Up Ya Class is a counter-point. Hosted by veteran podcaster and comedian Dave O’Neil, slightly less veteran broadcaster and comedian Nelly Thomas, and actual working person with no podcast experience whatsoever – but a real job - Shane Laing. All 3 presenters are originally rough trade and they will dissect the news, culture, history and politics with a class lens. They will probably also talk quite a lot about food. Up Your Class: a podcast brought to you by 3 Bogans with hearts of gold, union cards, and an eye for a good all-you-can-eat buffet. Produced and published by Nearly.

Our guest this week is renowned psychiatrist, author and media personality Dr Steve Ellen. We ask how he went from the Frankston race-track – literally – to the hallowed halls of modern medicine, psychiatry and academia. He wonders if his son – or any middle class kid – can ever really understand struggle, and gets into the unspoken class biases in both medicine and psychiatry. And, we talk Steve into applying for Australian Survivor. Find him here also - www.steveellen.com   Up Ya Class is hosted by Nelly Thomas, Shane Liang and Dave O'Neil. Shane, Nelly and Dave are back on their own this own this week and they’re chewing the chop-fat over why local government is dominated – or at least highly populated – by working class people, when State and Feds have the whole thing locked down with their silver spoons. Dave claims a breakthrough on this front and Nelly takes it back. Nelly offers “I, Tonya” for Bring a Plate and Shane is shocked to learn that Ringwood had an ice-skating rink in the 1970s. Finally, a robust discussion is had about Uncle Kev’s Fairlane Duco and whether or not it would ever be touched by an exploited 457-Visa worker at the car wash. So, the usual.   Up Ya Class is hosted by Nelly Thomas, Shane Liang and Dave O'Neil. Nelly's on Twitter and Facebook. Some Kids Book available here - www.somekidsbooks.com Find Shane on Twitter. Dennis Glover grew up in Doveton, Victoria at a time when it was considered "a bit rough" but "functional" - people had jobs and therefore income, dignity and a level of security. Since all the factories closed, Doveton has devolved into a dumping ground for the "battlers" that all the pollies talk about, but few do anything for. Dennis was - and still is - the only person in his family to be tertiary educated (and one of the few to finish school) and yet, he went all the way to the hallowed halls of The University of Cambridge. We ask him how the hell that happened and, how he likes his rissoles.   Up Ya Class is hosted by Nelly Thomas, Shane Liang and Dave O'Neil. Nelly's on Twitter and Facebook. Dave has a gardener. Nelly stayed at Noosa Sofitel last week. And Shane’s never stayed at a 5-star hotel. We also ask you if we should get a Facebook Page and if so, who’s going to manage it. Finally, here’s some bloke on the Gold Coast bribing his kid with trips to Aspen because… #softtdrinks. Nelly is feeling blue, Shane comes out, Dave forgot to do his homework and we’re joined by special guest Steven Roberts – an Associate Professor who is still just Jenny from the Block. Steven Roberts is a Pom from the wrong side of the tracks who has ended up in Australian Academia. He is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Monash University but almost very nearly didn’t finish school. Steven was chosen for a prestigious select entry government school but found the experience entirely alienating (think Barracuda) and his grades plummeted. He went from there to tech school to work and eventually, all the way to a PhD. His research interests are class, masculinity and how they intersect and on this episode we chat to him about class in Australia compared to the UK, working class masculinity and about becoming a new dad. Finally, someone actually qualified joins the podcast.   Up Ya Class is hosted by Nelly Thomas, Shane Liang and Dave O'Neil. Nelly's on Twitter and Facebook. Live from Nelly’s kitchen table! Nelly, Shane and Dave catch up on what happened to Shane’s evicted client, Dave’s new TV pilot and what Nelly got for her birthday (not really - no–one asked what Nelly got for her birthday). Dissecting Peter Dutton, Fraser Anning, dog grooming and wonder what Uncle Kev would say about Uber Eats. The only they’re sure of, is that he wouldn’t try Sushi. And, as always, Nelly gives the guys homework in the vain hope that they’ll actually do it.   AD: Get 10% off your order at Super Simple Cards when you use the offer code "class". We have to tough it out without Shane... but he's missing for an eerily relevant reason. Dave brings a book about Know Your Place, Nelly talks Gordon Ramsey in Prison and we try to work out why poverty is cumulative and compounds itself. This week we are joined by a rough-as-guts sheila from 1970’s Reservoir effisode of Housos. We ask Catherine “Dev” Deveny what class she is, how  her background has affected her career, whether her “trouble maker” status is class-infused and, whether she gives her kids pocket money. Dev is one of Australia’s favourite writers, comedians and lovers of potato cakes and we’re delighted that she's week's Up Ya Class Bogan with a Heart of Gold. http://www.catherinedeveny.com/   Up Ya Class is hosted by Nelly Thomas, Shane Liang and Dave O'Neil. Join us on Australia’s leading* class podcast as we talk to our very first guest – comedian, broadcaster, author and Bogan Buddhist Meshel Laurie.  Is humour classless? What cultural obligations do we feel as Rough Trade? Why is Meshel’s dad living in her back yard? And what birds is Meshe’ls cousin’s feral girlfriend keeping in the shed?
