Description

PhilanSocial is a podcast hosted by everyday working stiff John Sherrill. This particular podcast is designed to highlight a wide range of charitable causes, championed by thought leaders throughout the country from all different walks of life. With interesting people all around us, doing extraordinary things, the mission of PhilanSocial is to discover what makes people tick, what drives them, what amuses them, and why they support the causes that they do. Combining philanthropy with a social component will hopefully enable our guests to raise some much needed exposure and money for those who need the most help, while having a laugh or two along the way

On the 2nd attempt to successfully save their chat (nice job John), Indiana Legend Sally Bindley, Founder and Director of one of the most impactful and successful organizations in Indiana, School on Wheels, joins John on the 15th episode of PhilanSocial! Sally and her team are working exhaustively, each and every day, to provide tutoring, resources and overall guidance to the estimated 5,000 children of Indianapolis that are being affected by homelessness this year alone. Sally and John touch on all aspects of what this wonderful team of 22 are accomplishing in Indianapolis, and Sally provides some amazing insight into the crisis that affects ALL of us. Get involved! On the social side, they also have a little fun by discussing Sally’s most memorable celebrity encounter, her buddy Peyton Manning, her loyalty to her sports-challenged alma mater, and argue about her disinterest in communicating directly with animals?! Please read about School on Wheels and (please!) donate here: www.indysow.org
Rising national star standup comedian, The OG (Original Ginger) and newly engaged Brent Terhune joins John for the 14th episode of the award-winning (lies) podcast, PhilanSocial for shenanigans and more. Join us as “Mr. Turkey” and John discuss Brent’s start in comedy, his most interesting gigs to date (including one in a prison?!), and his hilarious stint as a substitute teacher. Brent also gives insight on other aspects of the comedy world, including his favorite all time AND local comics, and how he is reaching millions (literally) of new fans with his “redneck satire”. This is not one to miss, and Brent’s show isn’t either! On a much more serious note, Brent also details the lifesaving work being done by The Trevor Project, a group providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention for LGBT youth. Please read about and donate here: www.thetrevorproject.org
For the 13th episode, the ultimate road warrior, Pacers Hall of Fame Play by Play Announcer Mark Boyle, joins a clearly star-struck John to discuss Mark’s fascinating and legendary journey in broadcasting, and everything from an arm wrestling contest to Mark’s favorite cigars. Most importantly, Mark champions and advocates for The Indiana Children’s Wish Fund, an organization literally making dreams come true for terminally ill children in Indiana. Please take a few minutes to hear John’s conversation with the best in the business, and also please check out this amazing group. Please read about and/or donate here: www.indywish.org
This week on the 12th PhilanSocial podcast, the highly energetic and convivial Kelly Anderson joins John in the “studio” to chat about the rewards and challenges of founding and owning a private business, her brainwashed love of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and her newfound delight in a good Bloody Mary. Kelly also discusses the important work being done by the Little Red Door Cancer Agency in Indianapolis, and how we can support and connect those in need of their amazing services. Kelly’s creative and optimistic outlook on life shines through in this episode – please give a listen and a share! Please donate and research Little Red Door here: www.littlereddoor.org
Live With The Woolf! Recorded “on location” in The Windy City, Episode #11 features the continuously delightful Megan Woolf (who also named the “PhilanSocial” Podcast), as she joins John to discuss her high school swimming stardom, her ironic penchant for baking addictive cookies, and how her and her legendarily smooth husband Dan ended up being pioneers for the amazing JDRF Foundation in Wisconsin. (Hint: REAL Green Bay Packers fandom is involved.) In addition to this, and answering John’s worst either/or question yet, Megan highlights what this wonderful organization (JDRF) is up to, and where your hard earned donations will go! *Friends! Don’t miss this episode! Adrienne Vollmer, a Dragon Mom on a mission, joins John to discuss her family’s amazing journey with their son, Graham, and his inspiring battle against SMA (spinal muscular atrophy). Adrienne, Graham, and their family fight together every day to simultaneously support families AND find a cure for SMA, and have done everything from convincing our state legislation (unanimously) to pass SMA screening for newborns, to organizing wildly successful fundraising events around our great state. In between these topics, Adrienne also highlights John’s rapidly advancing age, her love of Purdue Basketball (why on earth?), and some valuable baking tips. We hope you enjoy this conversation, and rally behind this amazing family! Please follow and donate at: www.prayersforgraham.com
In the latest episode of PhilanSocial, the incomparable Mrs. Becky Crumley of Grace and Grit, Inc. joins John to discuss being the favorite child in her family (John can relate), her divorce that never quite took, and her passion for all of the wrong sports teams. And…they also found time to discuss Becky’s (and her partner Wendy’s) commitment to helping find a cure for Parkinson’s Disease through their group, Grace and Grit, Inc., and their September 10th fundraiser at Top Golf! Give a listen and a share (and a few bucks)!!! Check out Grace and Grit at https://www.facebook.com/groups/graceandgritfoundation/ and register to play, bid on auction items and/or donate!”
