Labour has undergone a seismic shift over the past decade. The rise of gig work and temp agencies have made employment more precarious than ever. In the interest of profits, companies are turning more and more towards temporary foreign workers and international students for minimum wage jobs. And even for those with seemingly secure employment, wages and benefits continue to be squeezed. One thing seems clear: workers are getting screwed. This season of COMMONS will dig into the fascinating history and ever-changing present of what it means to be a worker in Canada.  COMMONS: Work launches on March 20th. Post-Mortem, Part 1

Post-Mortem, Part 1

2023-11-1341:01

For over five years, Canadaland has been investigating Thunder Bay, Ontario. Specifically, we have been trying to figure out why there were so many unanswered questions around the deaths of Indigenous people in this one Ontario town. We have looked at the cops. The schools. The courts. The  government. The people in the town itself. But we never looked at the coroners and the forensic pathologists who are a central part of death investigations. And once we started to do so, freedom of information requests and leaked reports pointed to even greater problems with how deaths are investigated, that could span the entire province. And so we went back to Thunder Bay.Host: Jesse Brown Credits: Cherise Seucharan (Reporter), Jon Thompson (Reporter), Ryan McMahon (Reporter), Tristan Capacchione (Audio Editor and Technical Producer), Bruce Thorson (Senior Producer), Annette Ejiofor (Managing Editor), Karyn Pugliese (Editor-in-Chief)Further reading: Lawyer says families 'ignored' as Broken Trust final report on death reinvestigations expected within weeks, CBC News, Feb 15, 2022Reports on racism and a reckoning for Thunder Bay, TVO Today, Jan 17, 2019Ontario coroners looking to unionize over working conditions, upcoming reforms, CBC News, June 14, 2023Horwath calls for review of Hamilton forensic pathology unit closure, CBC News, August 23, 2019'Disappointing' response so far to 7 youth inquest recommendations, says Aboriginal Legal Services, CBC News, August 23, 2017Thunder Bay TV series, CraveAdditional music by Audio NetworkSponsors: Douglas, Communauto, IndochinoIf you value this podcast, support us! Way too much content that's catered to wannabe journalists and writers in the GTA.

More podcast series like Thunder Bay and Dynasties please. Less podcast series that are aimed for Toronto journalists. We get way too much Canadaland produced content that is about the media business.

such an amazing podcast! I don't know how it took me so long to find it, maybe cuz we really don't talk about indigenous people's issues enough!

Ive lived between B.C. and the yukon in small towns for all of my life. Sadly these stories are all too common. In whitehorse, where i grew up, there are so many parralells to thunder bay it blows me away... If the creator of this podcast reads this, thank you for taking the time to tell these stories... too many just like them are never told. And the monsters continue to walk in plain sight.

More purveyors of the climate scam. I love in Ontario and I want more pipelines. All the solutions to the hysteria are cheap, easy and simple to implement.

that ex cop really needs to stop laughing when talking about KNOWING these underage sex trafficked workers and what was happening. I don't care if it's a nervous laugh or whatever. He is disgusting. I wonder if he would be laughing if they were talking about his daughter, or if he would have let it all happen if it was one of his daughters. This podcast is so good but I haven't listened to a podcast like this in a long time that makes me feel so sad, angry and a whole lot of disbelief that people can treat vulnerable people this way, even though I live in Australia and know what happens to our own indigenous Australians. I really hope that this all coming out can make some sort of change in that town and for the people who live there. This is hurting my heart. People need more kindness. now I'm starting to sound like a total hippy, I'm not, but I don't think I've been so affected by a podcast before.
