Description

On the 4th March 2009, my life changed forever. My Dad, the man I looked up too, the man who in my eyes had 'everything' on paper took his own life. After it happened I struggled to deal with the grief, I buried the pain and found myself asking the question 'why' over and over again. I too then found myself struggling with depression and anxiety. This Podcast is all about documenting not only my own personal journey to discovering more about mental health and suicide, but to also document other stories too. It's time to talk about mental health, it's time to give it the voice it deserves and hopefully this Podcast can provide that. Hopefully this Podcast helps show others that they're not alone...

Paul McGregor is an author, lecturer, a mental health advocate, husband, Father of 2 and avid Liverpool supporter. He shares daily content, giving mental health a voice across multiple social platforms and through speaking and workshops across the UK.

THIS WAS A POWERFUL EPISODE. Two weeks ago I had a video call with Alex Costa, where we discussed mental health, his drive to never give up, dealing with grief and his work ethic. It's funny, I was first connected to Alex through Antonio Centeno (of Real Men Real Style) who let me know Alex was in London. We were trying to arrange to meet up, then randomly bumped into each other at the YouTube space in London. We discussed my switch to mental health, and Alex shared a personal story about his auntie...Alex also then shared the idea for this series, which is why it was. a real honour to have him on as a guest! We spoke about:- When he started YouTube and why.- His decision to move from gaming videos in Portuguese to men's lifestyle videos in English.- The times he felt like giving up, when results weren't coming.- His own personal experience with suicide, losing his Auntie and how that shaped his life.- His thoughts on mental health, and the importance of talking.- As an influencer, how much does he work?- Future plans for Alex and his channel.Even though we were both stuck in lockdown, and it would've been greater to do it in person, it was awesome to hear Alex talk so openly about issues he's faced. His advice around mental health I also try to reinforce to others on a daily basis, however tough things are right now... never give up.The main purpose behind this series is to show influencers in a light we might not see them from what they share on social media. Social media is very much a highlight reel, and we often forget these are humans behind these profiles. Thanks Alex!I'd love to hear your thoughts on this interview, and don't forget to leave a rating and review.Watch the interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDehO5xUbOcWho would you like me to interview next?!Follow me on Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/pmcgregorcomSay hi over on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pmcgregorcomGet in touch: http://www.pmcgregor.com Hosted on Acast. I've missed coffee, I've missed answering your questions, and I've missed this Podcast! In this episode I answer your questions, and talk about dealing with lack of motivation and how to stop procrastinating...It really is a tough time right now, and from a lot of conversations I've been having I wanted to jump on and talk about how to 'eat that frog' and get stuff done when you're struggling with motivation. I also answer:1. How are you dealing with lockdown personally?2. You’ve been open about your dark days, what was the biggest change for you that helped you get to where you are today?3. You’ve said in a recent live stream you love TikTok, what do you like about it?4. What made you decide to stop creating fashion videos and start creating mental health videos?5. Do you still think appearance is important to help with how you feel?6. How do you manage anxiety when things become unbearable, it’s ok to suggest coping techniques but when it’s really hard to deal with what can I do?7. My friends are struggling, but I find it hard to help them especially now… what can I do?8. What does it feel like to now be 30?9. Favorite place to buy clothes?10. 4 things you’ve got recently you now can’t live without?11. 3 books you’d recommend to someone wanting to improve their mindset12. How do you deal with procrastination and getting motivated personally?13. What’s your plans with YouTube, you haven’t been active for a while?Got a question you want me to answer in the next episode? This one I've been holding back for a while, but I was lucky to sit down and chat with Eric Bandholz from Beardbrand. Aside from Eric's really poor jokes (watch until the end!) we spoke openly about topics such as parenting, business success, finding confidence and infertility. With Eric's channel having over 1 million subscribers, we really stepped 'behind the reel' in this interview...We spoke about:- How growing a beard helped him live his truth, and gain confidence.- The struggles he and his wife faced trying to become parents.- How he balances business with family, and the challenges he faces.- The real reason why he started Beardbrand.- The lessons he's learnt from failure- What advice he would give to somebody wanting to become a YouTuber today...I hope this conversation helps you as much as it helped me, and I want to once again thank Eric for his time and honesty. The main purpose behind this series is to show influencers in a light we might not see them from what they share on social media. Social media is very much a highlight reel, and we often forget these are humans behind these profiles.I'd love to hear your thoughts on this interview, get involved in the comments below.Go and subscribe to Eric here: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheBeardbrandSubscribe for more videos like this: http://www.youtube.com/c/paulmcgregorvideosFollow me on Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/pmcgregorcomSay hi over on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pmcgregorcomGet in touch: http://www.pmcgregor.com Hosted on Acast. A while back, I featured on a podcast episode for MQ Open Mind. A podcast by the very amazing charity MQ Mental Health. In this episode, I alongside Hannah (from MQ) and Rory O'Connor (suicide researcher) got together to bring awareness for mental health and suicide on world suicide prevention day.It was a podcast that saw me, share my personal story, with Rory sharing from his research and perspective what may have caused my dad to fall ill like he did.The podcast was shortlisted for a Mind Media Award and last week, when attending the ceremony, we found out we won!I talk about the experience in this Podcast episode here, and share some behind the scenes secrets ;)Follow me on Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/pmcgregorcomGet in touch: http://www.pmcgregor.com Hosted on Acast. I recently poured a fresh brew of coffee, grabbed my microphone and hit record. In this episode, I get honest. Talking about a few emotions I've had to deal with and process recently, in the hope that it shows you that it's ok to talk about your emotions. Emotions are normal. Some are more painful than others, but it's not about turning off emotions it's instead learning the best way to manage and process them.In this episode I talk about 2 emotions I've had to process recently.1. Dealing with burnout.2. Could my Dad still be alive?I talk about them in more detail, and hopefully my honesty helps! To raise awareness for mental health, please leave a rating and review! SORRY! SORRY! SORRY! Firstly, for the lack of recent updates. But hopefully this episode makes up for it :)This was an old interview, back in summer, with Dave who has his own podcast and we discussed a lot around mental health, masculinity and also my journey.Back in 2009, just after losing dad, things didn't look great. I found myself in a dark place, at 21 with very little hope. But through seeking help, and through a journey of dealing with the emotions I suppressed I managed to change how I was feeling.Fast forward over 10 years, and I now share my story and talk openly about mental health full time... whenever I can. But it wasn't an easy ride.I discuss it with Dave in this Podcast.Enjoy!Find out more about me: www.pmcgregor.comFollow me on Instagram: www.instagram.com/pmcgregorcom Hosted on Acast. This interview really shocked me. I've had the pleasure of knowing Antonio Centeno for a while now, but what he shared in this interview was truly inspiring. Antonio Centeno was someone I got to know after watching his videos on YouTube back in 2011, and seeing his channel grow over the years (and his work ethic) has been hugely motivating for me. His passion for style, business, but also helping people really shines through whenever I have a conversation with him. But this conversation was different...We spoke about:- When he got in to YouTube (and why)- The emotions he felt after losing his sister to suicide- His thoughts on the military, and the high suicide rates amongst veterans- Why what you see on YouTube, never tells the full story- How he deals with trauma in his life- His #1 piece of advice for anyone wanting to hit 1 million subscribers on YouTubeI hope this conversation helps you as much as it helped me, and I want to once again thank Antonio for his time and honesty. The main purpose behind this series is to show influencers in a light we might not see them from what they share on social media. Social media is very much a highlight reel, and we often forget these are humans behind these profiles.I'd love to hear your thoughts on this interview, drop me a message! SUPER honest interview coming up, Henry asked a few questions I've never really explored before. This was an interview I gave around mental health awareness week, sharing my story but also touching on subjects such as the mental health crisis, mental health in the workplace and also my thoughts on dealing with adversity.Hopefully it brings you some value! To raise awareness for mental health, please leave a rating and review! Just finished up a lecture and wanted to record this episode sharing 5 lessons I wish I knew when I was 18. At 18, I had just faced the biggest turning point in my life. My Dad had taken his own life. I struggled with the grief, dealing with the why and I struggled to deal with anxiety and depression. In fact, things got pretty dark. From 21 I've been on a journey processing it, and trying to manage my own emotions. I decided to look back and think about 5 things I've personally learnt a long the way and I hope they help you too. They are:5 Things I Wish I Knew At 18…1. Focus on what I control2. Don’t worry about judgement3. Be present4. Live in abundance, not in lack5. Strive for freedom by being YOU.To raise awareness for mental health, please leave a rating and review! Feeling guilty and want to stop? In this episode I talk about what you can do to get rid of guilt instantly. Guilt is a negative emotion. When you carry guilt, you carry negativity. We often feel guilty because of things we've done in the past, but understanding the root cause of guilt is the first step to letting go.Remember guilt is just an emotion, a thought, and you control your thoughts. Therefore start by taking responsibility and resolving whatever it is that's causing you guilt. Then forgive yourself. We all make mistakes, it's how we deal with the mistakes we make which defines us. Forgiving yourself will allow you to remove the feeling of guilt immediately. Letting go of the past is key too, you can't control anything you've done in the past you can only control what you do right now. Let go of the past and make change in the present.I hope this episode helped, if it did don't forget to leave a rating and review.Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRF0erizDA8&t=1sFollow me on instagram: http://www.instagram.com/pmcgregorcomSay hi on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pmcgregorcomTweet me: http://www.twitter.com/pmcgregorcom Hosted on Acast. So over the past few days there's been two occasions where I've been asked about antidepressants, and I wanted to share a few of those thoughts on this quick episode. In other episodes, I've been honest about my opinions about antidepressants but I wanted to reframe them in this video. For me, antidepressants and medication for mental health is needed. But the way they're being prescribed and the way it seems to be the ONLY treatment I can get instantly right now simply isn't right.I talk more about it in the episode!P.S. Depression Has No Face

Depression Has No Face

In this talk I openly share the story of my Dad, how I dealt with it and what we can learn from the way we currently treat depression. And I really want to focus on the fact that depression can affect anyone. Depression isn't always constant sadness, it can often be disguised with a smile. This full talk was delivered at Wieden and Kennedy in London for mental health awareness week and I hope it brings you value.Remember, it's ok to take off that mask.To raise awareness for mental health, please leave a rating and review! So this was hard, going back through and reacting to an article published about my Dad's suicide. If I'm honest, I completely forgot about it until recently we were looking through things for some content for a documentary. Isaac hit record on the camera, as I looked back and went through the article and the comments. Including a comment, from me. The 18 year old me. This was hard, but I'm hoping my honesty helps in this episode. Also, I'm hoping that it shows that even when tragedy hits. When you're dealing with adversity. You can get through it, and things can get better.Appreciate you xSUBSCRIBE: http://www.youtube.com/c/paulmcgregorvideosFollow me on insta: http://www.instagram.com/pmcgregorcomRead my story: http://www.pmcgregor.comSay hi on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pmcgregorcom Hosted on Acast. To be honest, this interview really surprised me. For episode 3, I spoke to travel influencers Camille and Jean about the reality and pressures they face when it comes to social media.Their feed is inspiring, but at the same time I think it would be quite easy for some of us to compare our current lives to the travelling lifestyle they live. Also their relationship, would we compare the reality of our own relationship with what we see of theirs on social media? You can see them here - https://www.instagram.com/backpackdiariez/Going 'Behind the Reel' really emphasised just how real these two are. I've been lucky to know them for a few months prior to this interview, and I really wanted them to share their story, the challenges they face and the 'normality' of their day to day life.We spoke about:- How they became travel influencers- The judgement and rejection they received when leaving their 9-5- Arguments. Yes, they have them.- Their thoughts on social media. Is it fake or real?- The fear they have around how they're perceived online.- What they've learnt from travelling - Building a brand and balancing sponsorshipsIt was such a pleasure to sit down with these two, and I hope it showed a different side to the two people we may stumble across on Instagram. Again the main purpose behind this series is to show influencers in a light we might not see them from what they share on social media. Social media is very much a highlight reel, and we often forget these are humans behind these profiles. These two continue to inspire me, and hopefully they inspire you too.I'd love to hear your thoughts on this interview, drop me a message on social media and don't forget to leave a rating and review! So the other week I jumped on a Facebook live stream to answer your questions but also talk about guilt. Guilt is something we all face, but I share a personal story about the guilt I carried (and still carry) around my Dad' suicide. When we lose someone there's normally an element of guilt that comes with it, feelings of doing more or regrets that we didn't spend more time with them. But I found that without dealing with that guilt it can drag us down. Without accepting, forgiving and embracing change we can't move on. In this audio I share how I managed to start dealing with that guilt and I hope it helps you too!If this helped, please do leave a rating and review.Follow me for daily updates on Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/pmcgregorcomLike and say hi on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pmcgregorcomDrop me an email: paul@pmcgregor.comFind out how I can help: http://www.pmcgregor.com Hosted on Acast. Just before Christmas in 2018 I sat down with Ellen for the Metro's Podcast called Mentally Yours. It was an honour to be featured, and I wanted to share the full conversation with you.In it, I talk about the need for us to start talking about suicide. With it affecting so many, but with many still suffering in silence, we need to start normalising the conversation. Grief in particular is something as a society we shift away from talking about, but when it's suicide, that silence becomes deeper. The more open we can be about suicide, hopefully the less people will feel alone.I see it as the big 'S' now, and we can almost relate it to when cancer was the big 'C'. It's time to normalise the conversation around suicide. Thanks to the Metro for having me on the Podcast. If this helped, please do leave a rating and review.Follow me for daily updates on Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/pmcgregorcomLike and say hi on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pmcgregorcomDrop me an email: paul@pmcgregor.comFind out how I can help: http://www.pmcgregor.com Hosted on Acast. A few weeks ago I spoke at a panel for The Whole Man Academy alongside David Gandy. Situated at Number 1 Savile Row at Gieves and Hawkes, it was a huge honour to share my story and highlight the need for men to talk more about mental health.Hearing David also open up too, highlighting the effects of social media and how even he has dealt with mental health problems in the past, it was refreshing to see such an open conversation around men and mental health. As a lot of you know, my background was in the fashion industry. Starting an online store when I was 19, running a men's fashion magazine and also creating a lot of videos around men's style and fashion. For the past year, I've focused heavily on raising awareness and changing the conversation we have around mental health and being able to combine both interests for this talk was really special. This video shows my involvement in the panel, and if you're based in the UK I'd highly recommend checking out The Whole Man Academy to come to similar events like this.Follow them on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/wholemanacademy/On the panel I shared my story, how important it is for us men to talk and be ok with vulnerability, the importance of self awareness alongside how the importance of embrace change.I'd love to hear your thoughts, and also if you have a question you'd like me to answer... email me or message on social media!Leave a rating and review if you found it helpful.Watch the video version here: https://youtu.be/0r0mPfjkOg4SUBSCRIBE TO THE CHANNEL: https://www.youtube.com/c/paulmcgregorvideosFOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM: http://www.instagram.com/pmcgregorcomSay hi on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pmcgregorcomVisit my website: http://www.pmcgregor.comAsk me a question by commenting below or emailing paul@pmcgregor.com Hosted on Acast. If you have a negative inner voice and your mind is always putting you down, how do you deal with it? How do you overcome self doubt? In the second episode of 'Coffee with Paul', one of questions I got asked was dealing with self doubt and I think it's something we've all struggled with at some point. For me, understanding that self doubt is put there by someone else is a really important shift. We're typically not born with self doubt, but parents, teachers, friends, partners or co workers will plant that voice of self doubt in our mind. Understanding this and trying to take control of that thought is so important.I also answer questions about whether mental health units are the answer to peoples problems, how to deal with lack of motivation and whether I'm looking after myself with the mental health work I'm doing right now.Grab yourself a coffee, sit back, and hopefully my honesty in this video helps you.Hopefully this format shows different layers to my personality, something I'm hoping to include in more content as I move forward.I'd love to hear your thoughts, and also if you have a question you'd like me to answer... email me or message on social media!Leave a rating and review if you found it helpful.Watch the video version here: https://youtu.be/0r0mPfjkOg4SUBSCRIBE TO THE CHANNEL: https://www.youtube.com/c/paulmcgregorvideosFOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM: http://www.instagram.com/pmcgregorcomSay hi on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pmcgregorcomVisit my website: http://www.pmcgregor.comAsk me a question by commenting below or emailing paul@pmcgregor.com Hosted on Acast. So I was walking home last night from a productive day in London, it was 11pm, dark, I was power walking to get home as quickly as possible but I decided to hit record on a voice note.I thought I'd share it with you all, as it includes some take aways from the day that I had.I speak about why we all need to talk about mental health, no matter who we are and how important it is to break down the stigma. Every one is human, no matter who they are, and the more authentic we can be the less people will feel like they have to suffer in silence.I spent the morning with the charity CALM, and the evening with model David Gandy and conversations from both really reinforced that.I share more in this episode...Enjoy, and sorry for the bad quality ;)SUBSCRIBE & LEAVE A RATINGFollow me on Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/pmcgregorcomSay hi on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pmcgregorcomSubscribe on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/c/paulmcgregorvideosRead my story: http://www.pmcgregor.com Hosted on Acast. This was the episode I wanted when coming up with the idea of Behind The 'Reel', and I'm honoured to share this sit down interview with Aaron Marino.Aaron (Alpha M) is someone I first connected with back in 2010, and seeing his channel grow to almost 5 million subscribers has been inspiring. But I wanted to step behind the scenes, and see how Aaron feels about his YouTube success. We spoke about:- How he started YouTube and why.- His lowest points, going bankrupt and struggling for money.- The negativity he receives on YouTube, and how he struggles to deal with them.- Sponsorships. Is it all about the money for him?- Advice he would give to someone starting or trying to grow their YouTube channel.- How to deal with your mental health and overcome challenges. It was such a pleasure to sit down with Aaron, get to know him more, and share it with you all in this episode. The main purpose behind this series is to show influencers in a light we might not see them from what they share on social media. Social media is very much a highlight reel, and we often forget these are humans behind these profiles.I loved Aaron's honesty in this, and his someone I'm truly inspired by watching his growth online since 2010. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this interview, so leave a rating and review or drop me an email!
