Time of comfort, hope, and light on the longest night of this very long year. Service of comfort, hope, and light on this, the longest night in this very, very long year. In a more typical year, Christmas is advertised as a season of joy, excitement, and happiness.  And this year, as we weather a pandemic, we are grieving and longing and struggling on multiple levels. Perhaps in no other Christmas season of our lives do the shadows of the night feel as looming and overwhelming.  So welcome to this service of hope and healing on this, the longest night of this very long year. Love cannot be imposed from on high. Love is our greatest commandment— tending tenderly to God, to others, and to self. The Love of God-With-Us is love in action, radical love practices: redistribution of resources and risks, solidarity with those most exposed to a threat, hospitality to caravans, refugees, migrants, and sojourners, caring for those we’ve been taught to despise, or fear.
