Baseball, you say? Never heard of it. We're almost two months into a global pandemic that has left us starved for baseball, and given the fact that this is a baseball podcast, that's a problem! Nick Groke, Colorado Rockies beat reporter for The Athletic, joins the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast to discuss what the Rockies looked like before the world shut down, why it'll be unbelievably interesting to see what they look like if/when life resumes, and how it all relates to the star player and still sort of elephant in the room, Nolan Arenado. Plus, I take a stab at a few of your questions.Really, really good stuff this week. Don't miss out, and make sure to leave us a review on iTunes if you like what you hear. If you don't like what you hear, tell me why on Twitter; I'm @rockymountainbk. Music: "Halogen Eye" by OBrother from their new record, You and I. Welp, someone's prayers were answered.Baseball, like everything else in the world, has taken a backseat to COVID-19. While we do our best to flatten the curve, we might as well talk about baseball. So, I found a friend who spent a few years working in the industry. He's a Dodgers fan, but it's fine. We talked about the differences between the Rockies and Dodgers, for some reason dissected the NL Central, and riffed on a few other things as well. Plus, I take a crack at some of your questions.Support us on Patreon if you'd like and continue to practice good, responsible hygiene and distancing, as well as overall kindness.(Intro/outro tune: "Bring Out Your Dead" by Martyr AD)Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/rockymtnbaseball)
The Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast is back for a second season! We're starting this one off by reviewing a few things that went on this offseason, including (but not limited to) the Rockies failing to upgrade their bench depth, which could very well be a fatal problem. We explain why. However, there are also a lot of things to give us hope. The bullpen is going to be better. Kyle Freeland is going to be better. Nolan Arenado is basically God in a baseball uniform. You know, that kind of stuff.Plus, musings on MLB's temporary ban of reporters in the clubhouse, a former Rockie doing great things in major league camp with another NL team, and much more on the latest episode of the RMBP!Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/rockymtnbaseball)
Nolan Arenado is mad, Jeff Bridich and Dick Monfort are mostly silent (other than Dick's emails), and everything is coming off the rails. Welcome to being a Colorado Rockies fan! What the hell happened that resulted in Nolan Arenado going to the media and talking about disrespect and disillusionment? Bryan sheds some light on that, as well as why Jeff Bridich should be replaced even if this whole mess never happened in the first place. Plus, Larry Walker is a damn Hall of Famer! It's too bad the Rockies' front office had to put a damper on our happiness, but don't forget to celebrate No. 33.Oh, and FanFest is right around the corner. What a time to be alive. The Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast is back and better--wait, scratch that--more apathetic than ever. It's Rockies baseball; catch the fever!Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/rockymtnbaseball)
The Rocky Mountain Baseball podcast is back to talk about what moves the Colorado Rockies have made this offseason (happy trails to Chad Bettis, Tyler Anderson, and others) plus more potential moves to come as we approach MLB's reserves deadline, which is when teams need to have their 40-man rosters set in advance of the Rule 5 Draft.Jeff Bridich and company could use that draft, and many others, to rebuild a roster and system that became severely depleted in 2019 as a result of, well, I'm still not sure what. We'll get into that last part in futurer episodes, but for now, we'll get you up to speed on prospects the Rockies might keep around and ones they could wind up parting with as the aforementioned deadline approaches.Plus, musings on Nolan Arenado, Jon Gray, and more on another edition of Your Favorite Rockies Podcast! We know the Rockies were bad in 2019 and we're not far from putting that to bed, but first we have to get the perspective of one of the finest baseball analysts out there. On this special Hit and Run edition of the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast, ESPN and Fangraphs' Dan Szymborski explains what happened to our beloved purple-clad strongboys this past season and why, unfortunately, we might see more of the same in 2020. Dan chimes in on what little did go right for Colorado in 2019 and also breaks down the Dodgers' hilarious collapse at the hands of the Nationals in the NLDS.Don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review the podcast on Apple and anywhere else you listen. It's the final week of the 2019 season (as far as the Colorado Rockies are concerned, anyway), and that's truly bittersweet. Bad baseball is better than no baseball, and that's exactly what we're still getting from the 90-loss Rockies. But not all is awful; we look at three really good things happening as the season comes to a close. To keep it balanced, we also comb through three bad things. It's called Three Up, Three Down. It's a baseball term. Get it?Anyway, we also talk about the Prospect of the Week, who--hint--is currently playing in the Arizona Fall League. Plus, are Bud Black and Jeff Bridich safe? And what might/should the 2020 roster look like as things sit now? That and much more on Episode 15 of the MNTN--er, the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast. Subscribe, rate, and review today. Other than an always-cool series victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, things haven’t been too interesting for the Colorado Rockies on the field, but boy have things gotten a bit wild off of it.Specifically, we’re talking about the national media—namely, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic—laying waste to the team with some eye-opening reporting regarding how exactly the Rockies have gone from potential NL West darlings to, well, whatever it is they are now.Hayden Ringer rejoins Bryan to discuss all of those issues, which reportedly include bad coaching, Dick Monfort being Dick Monfort, a less-than-stellar clubhouse atmosphere (what the hell happened to Clubhouse Presence?), and much more. Warning: things are not bright and sunny at 20th and Blake, and we're not going to blow smoke up your rear ends to make you think otherwise. We will, however, celebrate what needs to be celebrated, answer your questions, and much more on the latest episode of the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast!Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/rockymtnbaseball)
The beat (as in, the Colorado Rockies continue to get beat--like a damn drum) marches on but Nolan Arenado doesn't care. He's out there being the best player in baseball this side of Mike Trout despite being the third baseman for a team that is, of this writing, 59-82 and 32.5 games out of first place. It's a crappy time to be a Rockies fan and we all know that, but let's not forget to take some time to appreciate the man who is the modern-day Mike Schmidt (I'll never grow tired of saying that).OK, that's enough of that. Now, let's get back to the depressing stuff, like how the Rockies were 15 games over .500 and in first place in the NL West on this date last season. But were there warning signs? We discuss that, the Prospect of the Week, heavy music (duh, shocker), and much more on a fresh episode of the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast!Don't forget to give us some love on Patreon, where you're going to see some exclusive content not too far down the road. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/rockymtnbaseball)
Jon Gray? Broken. Kyle Freeland? Busted. Scott Oberg? Hell we didn't even talk about him, but he's ... well, he's not healthy, that's for sure. The Colorado Rockies are decimated and we're extremely here for it, much as we don't want to be. But hey, at least Tim Melville made us all happy for a brief moment! On the latest episode of the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast, we pay our respects to Gray, who might be the ultimate silver lining of this disastrous 2019 season. We also address the Rockies' no good, really bad organizational prospect ranking from Baseball America (hint: people are not happy at 20th and Blake).Plus, a little bit of a different direction in the Prospect of the Week segment; your questions, answered; and more on Episode 11 of the RMBP!Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/rockymtnbaseball)
Colorado Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich is learning from the cardinal sins he committed in 2016, when the club decided to give playing time to pointless veterans instead of seeing what they had in the likes of Tom Murphy, Raimel Tapia, etc. That atonement came in the form of the Rockies finally cutting bait with unproductive-as-hell Chris Iannetta, who--despite sucking the life out of all of us for the better part of two seasons--has a strong case for the title of best catcher in club history. It appears they'll give some playing time to Dom Nuñez, whose major league debut was a memorable one. Does he have what it takes to get it done at the highest level? We break that down a little bit.Plus, we may finally know what has been wrong with Kyle Freeland, but the Rockies are going to have to get on fixing that before 2020, which promises to be one of the most pivotal season in club history. We explain why.Prospect of the Week is back as well, and--as you've become accustomed to--we answer some of your questions to close out the episode.Visit us on Patreon and consider showing your support in the form of dollar bills, y'all. The Colorado Rockies began August in a somewhat promising manner I guess, taking two out of three from the San Francisco Giants and helping send them into a much-deserved tailspin. But that's about the only good thing that happened since the last time you heard from us.The Rockies proceeded to allow 11, 14, and nine runs--all on the road, so don't you dare COORS me--in lopsided losses to the Houston Astros and San Diego Padres, and fans of both teams had a lot of fun GIF tweeting through it.Miserable. Absolutely miserable. We reviewed the week that was while also getting a hold of YET ANOTHER private conversation between Dick Monfort and Jeff Bridich. Plus, the Prospect of the Week, questions from "you, the fan," and much more on Episode 10 of the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast.Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/rockymtnbaseball)
The trade deadline has come and gone, and the Colorado Rockies ... well ... see ... they did next to nothing. And that's OK! It's just that things are really bad right now--the Rox just finished off their worst month (6-19) in franchise history--so people aren't exactly taking it well.Bryan explains what the Rockies might have been thinking and why he doesn't necessarily buy into it (hint: Jeff Bridich is not being honest with himself), plus--hey!--a couple of trades DID happen, so you'll get to find out about the newest Rockies farmhands.Additionally, Prospect of the Week is back, plus Bryan gets to YOUR questions and much, much more on the latest edition of the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast, which is available on every major platform!***Show your support on Patreon and get some cool stuff in return:patreon.com/rockymtnbaseballSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/rockymtnbaseball)
It's been a while since we last recorded a full-length episode and, well, things have since gone to hell in a handbasket. The Colorado Rockies have dropped 16 out of their last 19 to fall to eight games under .500 and 19--NINETEEN--behind the first-place Dodgers. What the hell is going on? Bryan tries to explain, with the help of Purple Dinosaur Podcast and MILB.com's Tyler Maun. Plus, the long-awaited return of the Rocky Mountain Baseball Prospect of the Week, questions, and a special message at the end that probably--rather intensely, I might add--properly encapsulates the current feelings of Rockies fans everywhere. And, what the heck has gotten into the Arenado family? We explain and dive into that as well. It's all here on the latest edition of the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast. Just like it's the Colorado Rockies' mission to compete in games, it's our mission to bring you the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast each and every week, even if the deck is almost always stacked against us.We're back with Episode 7 (no Star Wars jokes please), which discusses the Rockies' resilient ways. The club is one of baseball's best at coming from behind to steal games, and we talk about why that is.Our Prospect of the Week is an extremely relevant one, as he's going to help the big league club now and into the future. Learn all about what he's done in the minors so far, what scouts see, and what to expect from him at the major league level. Plus, news and notes on a couple of other youngsters in the pipeline.Plus, we've got a rather spicy What's Poppin' on Rockies Twitter segment thanks to some meme theivery--but is that part real or perceived? You know we've got something to say about it.We also answer your questions, sort of break some news at the end, and much more on the latest Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast!Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/rockymtnbaseball)
The Colorado Rockies did exactly what they were supposed to do on a 10-game homestand against the Orioles, D-backs, and Blue Jays: they won--to the tune of a 9-1 record, in fact, and now they're right back in the thick of things in the National League. On the latest podcast, we discussed what went right for the Rockies during a 16-10 May (hint: a pair of much-maligned veterans REALLY stepped it up), plus offered our thoughts on what the club needs to do in order to sustain--and even expand upon--their current brand of quality play. Also, we addressed one of the most unfortunate things to happen to the Rockies this season: the falling apart and subsequent demotion of Kyle Freeland. What does he need to work on at Triple-A Albuquerque, and how long will it take? We try to talk our way through it.The Rockies' pitching staff has somewhat quietly improved to the point where it ranks in the upper third or so in baseball in terms of park-adjusted ERA, but it still seems like it's the club's weak point, especially when considering the fact that they're going to be leaning on the likes of Jeff Hoffman and Peter Lambert for at least the next few weeks. Help could be out there if the Rockies are willing to pay for it one way or another, and we specuate about who that is.Plus, our Prospect of the Week, What's Poppin' on Rockies Twitter, Q&A, and much more on Episode 6 of the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast!Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/rockymtnbaseball)
The Colorado Rockies, like it's freakin' 2012 or something, are currently plagued by bad pitching and atrocious road offense. Unfortunately, we have to talk about the rotation again because--aside from German Márquez (who is the damn GOAT) and an up-and-down Jon Gray--the unit has been decidedly not good, and now Tyler Anderson is having knee surgery. Is it time to start looking at Jeff Hoffman and/or Peter Lambert? Or, dare we say it, Dallas Keuchel (though we dive into why he's not an option for at least a few weeks)? Is there any other help out there? Is anyone listening? We get into it all.Plus, Colorado--SURPRISE!--can't get on base on the road. We get all COORS on everyone and break down the ugly truth of the Rockies' numbers away from Denver. Plus, some Brendan Rodgers talk, a few anecdotes from Drew Goodman's book that is actually very good, our weekly segments, and more on the latest episode of the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast. We're available literally everywhere. The Colorado Rockies are in the midst of a rare trip to Boston, where ... well ... there aren't a lot of great memories for the franchise. But they made a pretty great one on Tuesday night, storming back from a 3-0 deficit (that seemed much larger than it was because Colorado struck out TWENTY FOUR times) to beat the defending champions. We recorded this episode while watching that game out of the side of our collective eyes, and we hope you'll like our reactions. What you might not like is that the Rockies have recalled Pat Valaika in place of the recently demoted Garrett Hampson. We explain why, despite the existence of Brendan Rodgers and maybe other better non-Valaika options, you're going to have to learn to like it. Also, we dive into the bullpen for really the first time and talk about why it hasn't been great, what might happen going forward, and who's around to help. That, plus our PROSPECT OF THE WEEK, WHAT'S POPPIN' ON ROCKIES TWITTER, terrible Boston accents, and much more on the latest Hayden-less episode of the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast!Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/rockymtnbaseball)
The Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast is back after a week off and, well, things have not been going well for the pitching staff--particularly, Kyle Freeland and Tyler Anderson. Freeland is coming off the worst start of his career and now owns an ERA near 6. Anderson, meanwhile, has done something that no major league pitcher has done since 1913, and that's not a good thing. We dissect what's wrong with Freeland, and get into how much hope we should have regarding a turnaround. We also got in depth talking about the Rockies' realistic options for replacing the recently demoted Anderson in the rotation--something they'll need to do later this week when his turn comes up again.Since we took a week off, we're giving you TWO Prospects of the Week as well as answering your questions, talking about What's Poppin' on Rockies Twitter, and much, much more.Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/rockymtnbaseball)
It's the first episode of the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast that features the show with four voices, as was initially intended. Nick and Hayden join Bryan and Tyler to discuss the Colorado Rockies' resurgence, detailing what has gone right during a 7-3 stretch while still acknowledging the club's faults.A segment that is sure to be controversial makes its debut, in addition to the second weekly Prospect of the Week and Rockies Twitter Update installments. Plus, we get to some of your questions regarding the Rockies and their lineups, roster composition, etc. It's Episode 2 of the Rocky Mountain Baseball Podcast, and it's ready to infiltrate your ears now!Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/rockymtnbaseball)
