We're back! In this show we speak with Hackney activists about their experiences canvasing during the election. After the widely commented on defeat, we wanted to talk to Hackney Labour members about the highs and the lows of the campaign and try and figure out our way forward. Despite the sadness, we believe there is a lot to learn about this campaign. With so many Labour members who were actively engaged, going out to speak with people on the doorsteps in marginal constituencies, we believe that there's a great deal we can acheive with such a committed activist base. We reflect on the immense sense on solidarity felt and draw on what we can do to take forward a positive socialist agenda. This podcast was recorded on 18th December 2019 with Hackney North members Jordan, Maartje, Jaice, Maia, Jonny. Additional gurgles provided by Ima.
In this episode we talk to Anne-Marie Hickling and Amanda Bentham who are teachers and National Educational Union (NEU) members about the impact SATS are having on primary school education. This is pertinent as the NEU are holding an indicative ballot of primary school teachers to boycott the tests. We hear about what impact the testing regime has had on children and teachers alike and broader discussion about how education has suffered under successive Tory governments. We also have an update on upcoming events and campaigns in Hackney.
In this first full episode, Onay Kasab from Unite Union speaks to Greg Shreeve about the ongoing dispute between Hackney council and employees who are driver and passenger escorts for children with special educational neeeds and disabilities (SEND). These staff, who are only paid for the time spent with children to and from school - are requesting compensation for having to work split shifts. Pay is so low that many staff cannot afford the public transport costs of leaving the bus depot between shifts. Staff have already undertaken two days of strike, and called off a further 2 days agreeing to negotiations with Hackney Council. However as Onay explains, talks soon broke down as the council were unwilling to consider any compensation. In this episode Onay puts forward a reasonable alternative to the austerity that is putting pressure on councils to employ public servants on low-wage insecure contracts and what can be done by Labour and momentum members to support this dispute.
