Description

Today, we see a movement afoot. It's not limited to the countryside or the heart of the city, the movement is global and strong parents are choosing to restore, regenerate and re-cultivate what parenthood means and what success as individuals and as a family is. We call this rewilding parenthood and this podcast features parents leading this movement. Our podcast is told in 5 episode thematic based seasons - the purpose being we want families interested in a certain subject matter to get a holistic look at the lifestyle they seek to pursue and most importantly highlighting paths to achieving this life. Of the five episodes per season, four will be hosted by me in English and the fifth in Spanish and hosted by my partner, Sofi. So whether your kids are in your mind, in the womb, in diapers, school or taking care of you, the stories told here are for those of us who have chosen the sacrifice and joy of parenthood and seeking a better way to be.

Hosts, Colin Boyd & Sofi Aldinio launch their first podcast episode describing what rewilding parenthood means and why documenting inspiring stories of other families emboldens them on their current overlanding journey from Maine to Argentina as a family of four.Sofi and Colin had an adventurous lifestyle before settling in Portland, Maine. The pair lived in NewZealand for five years while also traveling and working independently overseas. As Colin was wrapping up his years competing on the Freeride World Tour, they moved to the US and their first child was on its way unexpectedly. As they quickly prepared for their new child, they felt their lives changing and over the course of four years, two houses, full time jobs, mortgages, airbnb's daycares, life insurance, etc... they lost themselves and each other as many other young parents do.Their current #overlanding journey from Maine to Argentina, Sofi's home, is a reclamation of the adventurous lives they seek to live and the experiences they want for their family. While they admit, vanlife has been more challenging than expected, they feel more connected now than in their traditional lives living the american dream and they hope to inspire others to pursue their passions.ABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast featuring families leading bold and courageous lifestyles. Gavin Noble is the kind of guy that will send you a message on instagram after seeing your van driving through Alachua County, Florida, the place he and his family call home. This is how we connected with Gavin and both his sincerity and openness from the outset drew us into the retreat he is shaping for his family. As a stay-at-home dad, Gavin already doesn't fit in with the way our society expects him to. Yet seeing him in his element carving flutes out of bamboo, towing a wagon of kids picking citrus from the neighbors or just conversing with his children in French, he seems to be doing exactly what he is meant to do - be a kick ass dad. With chickens running around the food forest he's creating from the earth up, Gavin is a true renaissance man that is the redefinition of masculinity in this day and age.In this episode we'll cover how Gavin and his wife Beth arrived in Alachua County and how they've set up a lifestyle that values time together over financial gain and how they are building the life they want to live.ABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast featuring families leading bold and courageous lifestyles. Simply Us and a Bus

Simply Us and a Bus

2019-07-0240:07

Driving north from Key West, I spotted a vivid blue school bus and as I neared, humans of all sizes were on the roof top deck, lashing down boats of all colors. Foolishly, I pressed on, tooting my horn, leaving Key West behind in search of a beach in solace. Almost two months later, the opposite version of this story was told to me by Aaron Tokarz as we swapped bus war stories the first night of the United Tiny Living Festival in Macon, Georgia. Over the next three days, are families united together seamlessly and on our final day together we recorded this podcast.Aaron and Philan were motivated and sought a substantial change in their lives and when she brought up the idea of a school bus, they had one parked in their backyard within a couple weeks. This is kind of how they roll, and now they roll full time as a family of five on board a beautiful International flat-nose 30’ School Bus. They have been following the unschooling philosophy for the first year on the road, letting each of their kids practice self-directed learning. In three short days, we saw each of their personalities come alive through a multitude of situations at the tiny house festival. In this episode we cover the reasons why they left their home of Rockford, Illinois, the immediate challenges of life on the road, unschooling, relationship challenges and why their life on the road is exactly what their family needed at that moment. While lounging at the beach in Stuart, Florida, a couple arrived on bikes, towing a carrier of two children. They were clearly tired - having biked some miles through the sun, but remained in good spirits while laughing over baguette sandwiches. Upon hearing more about their 1,200+ mile journey bike-packing across the Southern US, I invited Adrien into the Affuera Vida production studio to record a podcast. He shares the story of how his family of four (Marlene, Robin (5) and Paola (3)) jumped at the opportunity to move from France to Mexico as part of his mechanical engineering career, how bike packing has always been a part of his life and how he made this a family passion.ABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast featuring families leading bold and courageous lifestyles. Nicholas and Laura Pritchett came up with the decision to purchase and renovate an Airstream with a dream of traveling the country in search of a new home. Upon acquiring their Airstream, they spent every night and weekend renovating and rebuilding it after also constructing a home together from the ground up while managing full time careers and raising their daughter - super humans. Eventually it came time to depart and they learned the ways of the road through experience, discovering their travel rhythm, workflow and unearthing new potential places to live. Laura and Nicholas are humble beyond their words, yet their photography, meticulous airstream and rich lifestyle show the depth of their vision and values. Laura is an incredible painter and both are amazing photographers and can be followed on Instagram @bythebrush and @nicholasjared or on their websites Laura Pritchett and Nicholas Pritchett.ABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast featuring families leading bold and courageous lifestyles.
When we set out to produce this podcast, we wanted to be very careful so as to not solely highlight those who have just wildly alternative lifestyles. We wanted a season early on that was close to what many of us live; a 9-5 (ish) lifestyle, a long term career, school and community - while creating the rules of life we desire to live by. In this season we have five families who have done and are doing this in their lifestyle. From living in a school bus in New York City as a family of four, to balancing full time career and education while raising three kids and how and WHY to take a break from it all to rediscover what’s important. Our guests are all similar in that they or have lived in some of the largest cities in the world, but with stories from Germany, Australia, Argentina and the states, we have a lot of diversity. Tune in next week for episode one of Alternative Urban Families.ABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast featuring families leading bold and courageous lifestyles. When we started recording the Alternative Urban season we thought we’d need to find guests through stalking interesting Instagram profiles. Not the case with Jan & Renata as we bumped into them deep in the South Western desert of the United States and from the moment Jan introduced himself, I knew he was a friend for life.As we spent more time together, their story unfolded in chapters from an adventurous love story. Jan, originally German fell in love with Renata, originally Croatian in Southern Spain. Within months they were married touring Europe in their retro Mercedes van. Discovering they were pregnant, they returned to Hamburg to build their city lives - Jan finishing medical school and Renata just commencing art school - a five year full time commitment. Over the next five years they had twin boys and a daughter and the pace of their life increased to a frenetic pace. However travel remained a staple in their lives.Eventually they decided to take a year off and travel all of Africa as a family but getting there nearly broke them. Fortunately it didn’t and the trip to Africa set the tone of their family lifestyle forthwith. Both Jan and Renata are driven, talented and are willing to take on projects that would scare most away making them an absolute inspiration.Learn more about Renata’s Art on her website or instagram.ABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast featuring families leading bold and courageous lifestyles. The Fazio’s lived in New Jersey overlooking the Hudson River and the skyline of New York City where Ryan worked 60-80 hours a week to pay for their seemingly never-ending expenses. With one child already and another on the way, a change was necessary and his partner through out the idea of living in a school bus while living inside the burrows of New York City. Ryan needed some convincing, but she didn’t quit, doing all the research, budgeting and showing what would be possible with this new life. So like all good men, Ryan committed to the dream and soon they were the proud owners of a school bus and after a quick and dirty outfitting of the rig, they were soon living on the bus on the street. In this episode, Ryan shares stories from his adventures learning the ways of bus life inside of one of the world’s busiest cities. For example how they never received a single parking ticket, how he eventually learned to take water from the hydrants and power straight off the poles and most importantly how the community embraced their family in all parts of the city. The Fazio’s now live in Boulder, CO but if you’re interested in what their journey was like, check out Gypscity on Instagram.ABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast featuring families leading bold and courageous lifestyles. Flo and Nina Orley shared a dream that they put on pause with the birth of their first child - to sail around the world. At the time, the Austrian couple had already sailed halfway learning the ropes as they went intoxicated by the riches the sea offered. But with their family growing, they headed back to Innsbruck, Austria - Flo to continue competing on the Freeride World Tour and developing his career as a professional extreme snowboarder while Nina worked and took care of the children. With their kids (Momo and Keano) approaching an age that they would be comfortable at sea again, the Orley’s began planning their second attempt. From the Alps they began searching for a boat to house their family for potentially years at sea traveling the world. They would make many sacrifices to afford what was coming next and to also leave the comforts and security of their home. However when we recorded this podcast, Flo and Nina were hitting their stride having just done a multiway passage to Venezuela aboard a 40 foot catamaran. In this episode they discuss why they left, how their kids grew on the adventure and why making sacrifices are worth it to fulfill a lifelong dream. From their photos alone, you can see that their time at sea was truly intoxicating. After two years at sea sailing primarily through the Caribbean the Orley’s reluctantly returned to Austria after an unexpected illness in their family. They sold their catamaran, Snowflake and are now home, living the life they once did, a little bit older, wiser, blonder and more inspired in the world in which we live! You can follow the next leg of their journey at:www.instagram.com/sailawayfamilywww.sailawayfamily.comABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast featuring families leading bold and courageous lifestyles. On the way back from a photo shoot nearly ten years ago Peter and Kathy Holcombe realized that they were nearly coming home to mow the grass, pick up the mail, attend to a few other errands and then head out again to the next spot for their photo work. It dawned on them that if they downsized everything and moved into a life on the road, they would always have their home with them negating the need to return anywhere. So they did it. They deliberated and planned for well over a year and when the decision was made, they mapped out their itinerary and work along the way. They sold off their brick and mortar photo studio and dove in head first for the best decision of their life. Their largest hesitation was how they would educate their daughter Abby and they initially had her in a digital classroom where she would check in each day for a set number of hours. Yet after the first year, this felt more like handcuffs and they were unable to take on the opportunities that would allow Abby to thrive. So they tested out a number of other alternative forms of homeschooling until they found the right fit.Meanwhile, the Holcombes as a whole passionately pursue the adventures that make them feel most alive. They are all paddlers and Abby has literally grown up with a boat since she could fit the smallest commercially made kayak. On this trip and at the age of 12, she paddled the entire Grand Canyon in her own kayak, a feat perhaps nobody this young has ever done. While watching abby progress, Kathy also pursued her own outdoor challenges vowing to do 1,000 miles of self propelled adventure in 2019, learning so much about herself taking on these challenges mostly alone. The Holcombes are a true inspiration and are pioneers in their field. They are amazing photographers with a vivid portfolio, are accomplished world travelers and Abby is part of the Junior Olympic White Water paddling team. They are currently back in the US after spending the last six months touring Europe and they will soon be shipping their rig to South America to take on the next leg of their around the world tour.Follow Famagogo Below:www.instagram.com/Peterholcombewww.instagram.com/adventurous.misswww.instagram.com/holcombe.kathywww.famagogo.comABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast featuring families leading bold and courageous lifestyles. Imagine living aboard a 40 foot sailboat discovering the Pacific for five years. That is exactly what Josie, Christian and their three children have done since 2015. I spoke to Josie while they were docked in New Zealand having already crossed the Pacific together. The thought of it alone gave me cause for pause, yet her description of what it is like to see, or rather smell land, as she puts it, after three weeks at sea peaked my curiosity. In this episode, Josie discusses her partner’s background growing up on boats and sailing the Pacific circle twice by his young teenage years. When Josie met Christian, she sensed his steadfast commitment to a life at sea and dove in. They melded their family, both having daughters of their own and decided to bring a third into the world - Taj who was living afloat at 29 hours old. Josie also dives into the mechanics of how this trip was made possible and the sacrifices required. For example for the handful of months leading up to their departure, they left their slip in Sausalito, opting to save the money and moor out in the Bay. This seems like a frugal decision, however Josie would then have to commute 13 miles to and from work three days a week often in the dark which involved a kayak paddle and 13 cycle over the Golden Gate Bridge. Meanwhile - Christian would be homeschooling the three children along with preparing their vessel for an around the world adventure - talk about super hero parents! Season IV features five families who have selected a life on the road over the comforts of raising a family in a home. In the face of the Coronavirus, affecting us all, some may look at these families as suicidal while others would do anything to switch their NYC apartment for one of their mobile off grid vehicles. While all the episodes were recorded before the Coronavirus pandemic, we hope the episodes shed a light on alternative living styles and encourage you to take the next steps in your journey to become a more self reliant family - whatever that means to you. This Season features:@DeliberateLifeBus@Akela.World@NumberJuanBus@ADreamWorthChasing@FamiliasSinFronterasABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast featuring families leading bold and courageous lifestyles. The 40 foot purple Thomas skoolie with a roof raise and 1,000 + watts of solar stands steady on the ever-changing horizon. Inside lives Adam and Elizabeth along with their daughters Sadie and Wren - oh and their new corn snake Cali. They deliberately unplugged from normality about eighteen months ago opting for a lifestyle that put them in control of their destiny. Their choice was deliberate. It was intentional - rooted in a desire for abundance and freedom. For two years they toiled over their build out - referencing YouTube on the regular while putting in countless hours into their new home on wheels. In short - their space is perfect. It’s thoughtful and has everything they need to operate sufficiently off grid. In the rearview they left a steady paycheck, a home attached to a foundation and a community that was doubtful about their decisions. On the road they travel in two vehicles - the house-bus and the run around. They will park for a few weeks at a time while exploring the area then move on when the time comes. While it may sound like a vacation, it’s anything but. Adam and Elizabeth are on it around the clock working multiple gigs including running their own business on top of homeschooling their two girls. You’ll find them parked within striking distance of the best climbing in America or bustling along the most scenic trails happy to be deliberately free of the confines that the world defines as normal.Check out Deliberate Life Bus online:@DeliberateLifeBus@DeliberateLifeDesignswww.deliberatelifedesigns.comABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast featuring families leading bold and courageous lifestyles.
