Season of Separation

Season of Separation

2019-09-0521:47

In this episode of Firsts Over Forty, I talk about some recent firsts for me and I talk about the Season of Separation that I'm experiencing and some of my friends are experiencing. Whether it's death, divorce, or a new way of thinking and living, separation doesn't always have to be a negative experience. There are so many lessons in it and a light at the end of the tunnel. Promise it's not a downer! Join me for this week's discussion. @firstsoverforty
Be Kind, Always.

Be Kind, Always.

In this episode, I share more recent firsts and provide a quick recap of the RIDE Conference that took place in Atlanta in September. I also talk about my serendipitous interaction with a Lyft driver in personal distress and how I walked into a role and a lesson to hold space for his emotional state during our ride to the airport.
In this episode of Firsts Over Forty, I talk about my recent firsts including attending a mass meditation experience at the Field Museum. I also share how taking two weeks off of work with no concrete travel plans (I did travel three times though) allowed me time to think, meditate, and plan for what's next. We are so busy doing life that we don't always take moments to just be in life. Lessons from this most delicious decade. @firstsoverforty
What is Black Culture, really? Inspired by recent episodes of Red Table Talk and Mixed-ish, I offer a perspective on blackness and black culture, having been in the multicultural marketing communications industry for more than 10 years now. It's an interesting discussion that I look forward to continuing to have as I offer a perspective based on personal and professional experiences. I also share more firsts and an inspiring read on how we need to continue to be curious about our lives as we celebrate ourselves in this decade.
Holidays are tough on many people. What Lifetime and Hallmark movies present to us through the escapism movies (which I enjoy btw), ain't everybody's holiday reality. So, I'm inviting the Firsts Over Forty squad to give yourself permission to show up how you need to this season and every day. Even as we enter a new decade, enjoy the rest of your life by abandoning expectations and giving yourself permission to do so.
Words Mean Things

Words Mean Things

It is not lost on me that I work with words every day and that those words can have a powerful effect on a brand, a person, a bottom line, etc. Words have the power to create social movements and tear people down. I explored the power of words in this week's episode and urge all of us to think about the power in our own tongues...especially in the era of social media.
In this episode, I talk about my reflections during this Covid-19 pandemic. I offer some info that has been helpful to me and my circle to stay lifted and serve others. I also feature a chat with my first podcast guest, Fabia Talhame, who is a part of my friend tribe. The conversation was recorded before the pandemic hit in recognition of Women's History Month. She shares some really great self-care tips that we can all implement right away to ease our anxiety during this time. Key takeaway: Place your mind where you want it to go.
In this episode, I invited my husband, Munson Steed, CEO and Founder of RollingOut.com,  to chat about how we as a married couple have been navigating being #alonetogether during this Covid-19 crisis. We discuss our emotions and strategies to stay connected long-distance while continuing to be advocates and leaders #fortheculture. He's a media guy and I'm a communications girl. I also share some new firsts and a reflection for my fellow "woo woo" people.
Who are you really? Have you been able to discover new aspects of yourself during this time of quarantine? I have had several key learnings and have leaned into the self-discovery process. I share some of my findings as well as some more firsts.
Companies are recognizing the importance of the Black Lives Matter movement with social media statements and philanthropic pledges. In addition to this, there are more actions to be taken to create change. My girl and fellow expert in diversity, equity, and inclusion Toyia Rudd joins me to discuss the state of corporate America's response to Black Lives Matter. We go there, y'all. Learn, share, discuss. Then, #hireBlackwomen. #BlackLivesMatter
During this episode, I unpack some commonly heard phrases that as I've grown up, I've learned they don't always ring true. One of them is you get wiser with age. Wisdom and growth in our lives is a choice we continue to cultivate on this journey. If we automatically became wise with age, then why are old people more racist? Deep thoughts! I also talk more firsts and an upcoming virtual panel discussion you don't want to miss. #firstsoverforty
Yay to August and my birthday month! Typically, I celebrate the entire month with a fabulous trip, a spa day, and wonderfully delicious restaurant visits with friends and loved ones. This year is a different type of birthday. I'm leaning into this time to be introspective and reflect on lessons learned and a birthday ritual I'm going to begin this year. And of course, I'm sharing another first! #leoseason
This year had been a year. In this episode, I asked questions of myself that you may find helpful as you prepare for 2021. Who knows what's in store, but we can all have something to look forward to in 2021. Cheers! References: www.susannahconway.com, Unravel your Year 2021
In this first episode to kick off 2021, I invited my BFF Robin Harris to chat about the importance of friendships, especially during this socially distant time. We talk about how really good friendships feel safe, loving, and like a sanctuary to weather the storms of life. Tune in and listen to two good girlfriends just chatting it up.
It's Black History Month and there are so many great aspects of Black life and culture to learn about. This month, I'm spotlighting the Black Introvert movement, led by Jeri Bingham of Hush Loudly. She is launching the first Black Introvert Week in February 2021 and has some great info to share, events, and online panels dedicated to introversion and how this group is truly representative of some of our greatest leaders now and throughout history.
For Women's History Month, I had a chat with my colleague, tea entrepreneur, friend, and little sis, Aquinas "Queenie" Early. PR pro extraordinaire and founder of Deeply Rooted Teas, Queenie shares her lessons and revelations upon becoming a newly minted member of the finest 40 club.
Season 2022 kicks off with a story about how synchronicity and ancestral power led to my co-ownership of the first Black history museum in the country. This year we are going to have our "Night at the Museum" experience after years of hard work and I wanted to talk about the creative Black women who made it happen - all from another realm. Come with me on this journey of Black History in the making.
Dr. Margaret Taylor Burroughs was an artist, teacher, poet, institution-builder, and community organizer who changed the south side of Chicago with all she accomplished. Founder of the South Side Community Art Center, The DuSable Museum, the Lake Meadow Art Fair, and so on...she did a lot during her 90-plus years on Earth. I'm sharing a bit of her legacy. You will want to learn more on your own after this episode!
Can homes tell a story? I think homes that have been around since 1892 certainly can. Especially if they were a museum visited by thousands, a location of a Black creative renaissance, a home for Pullman Porters, and owned by one of the most successful building contractors of early Chicago. Come hear about the history of the Griffiths-Burroughs home from me, its current steward.
