During this episode of The Lurnist Show we talked with two L&D experts about the impact of COVID on the industry, how you can use L&D to recruit and retain top talent, and tips for how to build an L&D consulting business. It was a great show with a lot of GOOD nuggets of information.  My key takeaways from this show: Build your courses around the learner, not what YOU think they need to learn (i.e. don't make assumptions when building courses, find out what they need) In the future, learners are going to want to DO, not be lectured to.  This is very similar to what we discussed during my show with Naomi Harm - so the industry needs to get ready for this Universities have a lot to catch up on if they want to stay relevant.  Competition is emerging fast, and its changing dailyTim Slade is a speaker, author, and award-winning freelance eLearning designer. Michaels and Associates is made of learning architects, strategists, developers, solving business problems. On time, under budget, with a smile. In a nutshell, they create training. Everything Sherry does is focused on giving people the tools to contribute to businesses and their lives in their own way.We discussed many important topics about what Michaels and Associates does for their clients and learned how you not only need to have the technical skills but you also need to be able to understand your client's needs.  Not only do they have 35+ years experience in training, instructional design and e-learning, but they are completely client focused. I learned two things during this interview:1. They spend the time up front to ensure they understand exactly what the client needs - even if that means it is NOT training.2. They ensure there are frequent feedback loops with the client throughout development...If you want to hear first hand how a firm uses best practices to deliver HIGH quality learning development you must listen in on this episode!Hilary Buchholz / Director of MediaJean Reith / Senior Instructional DesignerFollow Michaels & Associates on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.
In Episode 6 of The Lurnist Show, Debra talked with Professor Aram Chávez of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.  Among other things, they discussed teaching and mentoring entrepreneurship curriculum in universities.  Professor Chavez frees students from the traditional constructs of uniformity with lateral thinking through entrepreneurial road mapping—teaching interdisciplinary courses with an atlas called Aha To Exit. His current focus is to teach hundreds of students annually; and, mentor dozens within ASU. He teaches the only process for innovators to become enterprisers. To that end, he recently co-authored a generative map with a temporal view of how to teach innovators to become entrepreneurs.  Professor Chavez has earned the Highest Rated Professor at ASU (State Press, 2015) and the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award for his innovative work with students at ASU. He was also featured in the Phoenix Business Journal as "20 People to Know in Startups".Professor Chavez spent some time discussing how entrepreneurship should be taught in the engineering schools as they are the innovators.  He also discussed the gaps in how entrepreneurship is taught in universities and how he is filling that gap with a standardized “map” for startups with his company, Aha to Exit. If you are an educator in entrepreneurship, or an innovator, you need to listen to this episode as it gives insight into how Professor Chavez has revolutionized and standardized the way entrepreneurship is taught.Links and resources:Aha to Exit – go here for the Startup Map, Startup Bootcamp, and other entrepreneur resourcesGnomigos – one of the companies owned by Professor Chavez discussed in the episodeAram Chavez LinkedIn ProfileASU Engineering School Entrepreneurship + Innovation Program
