Camp Horror Pride

2021-06-3002:02:13

They're quuueeeeeer. Hey y'all, happy late Pride! We are here with Eric, a camp connoisseur, to discuss the relationship between camp, queerness, and horror. We also delve into queer representation in horror history. Yes, it's a long one, but class is in session and we're here to teach! Join us as we discuss the royalty of John Waters, the controversy of Sleepaway Camp, the hunkiness of Brad Majors in fishnets, the baby gayness of Eleanor Vance, and everything in between!
It's book club time! Join the Scream Service gang as we talk about the epic, 1900's revenge tale Gilded Needles by Beetlejuice's Michael McDowell. We cast our dream movie of this film, talk about dirty New York, and pray for lesbians. Enjoy!
It's the Cults Episode!

It's the Cults Episode!

2021-05-2001:45:23

Wow, we are sorry for the hiatus. But thanks to Sound Guy Pete, we're back in business baby! And what a better time to rededicate yourself to Scream Service than our Cults Episode release?! Featuring one of our fav ghoul friends, Lucia, we delve deep and baby, I mean deep, into the world of cults. Forewarning, I'm the asshole atheist your youth group warns you about, so it gets dicey boys! Listen to the end of the episode for a word from our sponsor AND your own cult favorites submitted by listeners and lurkers just like you!
In this episode, we cover THE fiction book about anthropomorphic witch hats: Maynard's House by Herman Raucher. Join us as we cover this vintage slow burn that covers everything from haunted trees to inappropriate relationships with high school students.
Join us and special guest, Jessica Sanchez from Skewed Press as we discuss all things amateur cinematography. Visualize this episode in the most cozy, grainy, night-lit atmosphere and reminiscence with us when good horror was cheap.
Podcasts, unite! Join us with our special guests, Colin and Shane from the Hamilton Horror Podcast as we discuss six horror shorts that made us cringe, jump, and say, "da fuq?" We discuss the small but scary stories of The Curve, The Hug, Lights Out, Mama, Hidden Mother and What Happened to Crow 64?
Join our book club as we discuss Ania Ahlborn's Brother, a treasure trove of filth and feelings. Listen to our discussion about all that can go wrong in backwoods Appalachia and how The Cure fits in with a Texas Chainsaw Massacre -kind of family dynamic. Trigger warning: this episode contains discussions about incest, sexual assault, necrophilia, and more. It also contains the backdoor pilot to Nick and Shane's Joe Dirt podcast.
Perfect Blue (1997)

Perfect Blue (1997)

Wow, someone convinced Jenna Junior to watch anime and she surprisingly enjoyed it! That someone is our guest, Livia, who gives us an exhilarating, in-depth analysis of 1997's animated psycho-thriller Perfect Blue. Join us as we talk homicidal pizza men, creepy parking garages, and the twisty complications that come with the price of identity and fame.
We continue with our series of reading shitty horror paperbacks and the novelization of Poltergeist II fits in perfectly. Join Jenna and Johnny Junior as they talk about fridge poetry spirituality, Insane Butt Syndrome, demon tequila worms, and a saga featuring E. Buzz and Air Bud.
Join us as we discuss the popular short story collection, Her Body and Other Parties. We cover childhood urban legends, Girl Scout camp trauma, the mundane plot lines of Law and Order: SVU and write a poem together based on Machado's work. Special thanks to guests Nick and Shane for coming to a queer, feminist horror book club meeting and knocking it out of the park.
Park Ranger Danger

Park Ranger Danger

2021-01-0901:24:41

In this episode, we are joined by our friend Nick, a real life park ranger. We discuss creatures that have a bad reputation like spiders and snakes, the possibility of an Oklahoma Bigfoot, local lake monsters, and urban legends rooted in Oklahoma's rough past.
Buh-Bye: The 2020 Wrap-Up

Buh-Bye: The 2020 Wrap-Up

2021-01-0201:08:58

As we end the year from Hell, it's time to reflect on what gave us actually enjoyable scares this year. Join us as we go over the best movies, books, and podcasts Jenna Junior discovered in all that damn free time she had. Thank you to our listeners for making this fiendish year a lot more fun than it should've been!
In the spirit of television show holiday specials, Scream Service has brought together a cast of creepy characters to spend your holiday with. Join us as we get a visit from a traveler, a killer, and an iconic holiday figure, all discussing the holiday's best (and worst) horror films such as Silent Night, Deadly Night, Black Christmas (2019), Better Watch Out, Krampus, Black Christmas (1974), Rare Exports,  and Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas. We hope your holiday is full of merry and fright and we wish you a very scary Christmas!
In our book category for listener picks, Nick and I go over his choice/my least favorite book of the year, 14 by Peter Clines. Join us as I hurt Nick's feelings by doubting his taste as well as discuss the misguided hot take of "never showing the monster" and how Stephen King is probably just salty about The Shining.
Grab a cup of cocoa and join our bookclub discussion of Paul Tremblay's hit novel Head Full of Ghosts! Also included in this episode is a hidden drinking game every time a dog barks, so maybe spike that cocoa...
Yoinks! We got ourselves a mystery! This winter, we're investigating the bizarre death of a group of Russian hikers. Is it a bear? Is it a killer? Is it a UFO? We have no idea, but we sure had fun talking about it. Thank you to our listener Sara for this Russian puzzle as curious as Rasputin himself.
For our second listener's pick, we go goth. Join us as we discuss Universal's Dracula's Daughter with Hayden and Mark. It's got everything you want in a vampire flick: dangerous aeronautics, emo butlers, and lesbians! We also briefly go over Kier-La Janisse's book, House of Psychotic Women which references this film.
For the start of our listener picks month, we decided to take a very seasonal suggestion and watch 2008's schlocky holiday slasher, Thankskilling. Spoiler alert: we fucking hated it. Listen to Jenna Junior progressively get angrier watching a racist turkey cause havoc to potential Trump supporters in this quick little episode of rage. Sorry to listener James who suggested it: we still like you! Just not this movie.

Happy Halloween, boils and ghouls and nonbinscaries! Not only is today the most magical day of the year, but it's also our anniversary! Instead of you buying us diamonds, we thought we'd gift you with a gem of an episode. Gather round the campfire with a pumpkin beer, an apple cider, a vial of blood, and listen to former guests come on and share their scares. We love you all and are so honored to have you as our listeners! May your night be scary, your year be merry, and your werewolves be extra hairy.
