The Brave Dutch

A special guest is invited to dinner. Dick, Col. Warrack, and John interrogate the young man who claims to be part of an English Parachute Battalion.  

Col. Warrack and John are moved to several different homes in the course of just a few days. During the hustle, John re-encounters a few old Underground friends and amidst a moment of reprieve, both men become keenly aware of their haggard appearance. 

John and Col. Warrack become fast friends under the care of a young lady who, through her sacrifice, grace and commitment to freedom had a lasting effect on everyone she encountered. (Tineke made such an impact on John, he named one of his children after her). She was a hero of the purest sort and gave everything for her country's liberation and Allied victory. John abruptly ended the account of his experience without discussing a large portion of his time in hiding.  There are situations that proved too difficult for him to recall and shed more light on his personal suffering rather than the brave Dutch.  Fortunately, an English war hero, Col. Graeme Warrack, who was trapped behind enemy lines during the “Battle of Arnhem”, fills in that gap with his account of the Dutch Underground, “Travel by Dark” published in 1963. John and other Allied Airmen take part in Pegasus II- an operation to get all Allied Forces in hiding back into Allied territory. 

The boys make their way to a new hiding place in pursuit of the Allied Forces. John resolves the questions he pondered his first night in Holland.

John tells of a time he and a new airman get fed up waiting on Dick and the Underground. They decide to make a go of getting to Allied Territory by themselves. Art insists this idea could be dangerous for everyone and works to dissuade the boys from leaving on their own.

Bill and John enter their new, temporary home and learn much about the Dutch culture and the Dutch Underground's operations. A clever hiding space is revealed, and the boys discover getting to Spain is not as easy as they had been led to believe. Episode 4, part 1

John follows through with his decision to trust someone and meets several people who will be integral to the next few months of his life. 

Now determined to make it to Allied Territory, John must head South. Most importantly, he must find civilian clothing as the forest's shelter will, most certainly, wane.  He recalls several more first encounters with the Dutch and how he wrestled with who he could trust. 

During WWII, Lt. John Low, Jr, was shot down over Occupied Holland.  He spent 11 months evading capture due to the selfless efforts of the Dutch Underground.  “After a 96 hour war, Holland capitulated to Germany in May of 1940, but while the Dutch Government was forced to lay down its arms in the face of Hitler’s mighty armies, the people and underground fought on until they witnessed the defeat of this enemy.”-       John Low, Jr Thanks to Swing Republic for the opening music.
