It’s time we put you in charge of the subject matter — and we received hundreds of great questions. Many were remarkably intelligent, some were genuinely difficult to answer, and a few cracked us up. In this episode of the Carmudgeon show, Derek and Jason discuss fast cars. Or, more precisely, they complain about fast cars. Speed limits haven’t changed, so as cars get faster and faster, it just means we get to enjoy them less. Derek recently drove a Ferrari 488 Pista, the first Ferrari Jason thought was too fast. And yet Car and Driver Magazine just tested a BMW M8 that would crush the Pista in a drag race. The M8 Competition is a luxury barge that hits 60 mph in 2.5 seconds. Why would you want anything pleasurable to be over in two and a half seconds?The conversation meanders over to the Autobahn, which is where fast cars are their element — until they hit their nearly-universal speed limiters. Where’s the fun in that? At least the likelihood of being driven flat-out resulted in German cars’ technological superiority over most other cars. Like, say, American rental cars. In this episode, Derek and Jason peer into the crystal ball to concoct the recipe for the perfect collectible car. What it comes down to is a number of factors; a checklist of characteristics. Did the car represent an end of an era? Or if it was replaced, was its replacement fundamentally different in a bad way? How many units were made — only two cars to ever hit the million-dollar price tag were produced in greater than 1000 units — the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing and the Ferrari F40. Don’t forget attrition: some cars were made in large numbers but typically destroyed by rust, abuse, neglect, or just use. Or lift-off oversteer.Cars that are aberrations in their product lines (like the original GTI or the Mercedes Black Series cars) tend to do well. We can’t, of course, forget intrinsic desirability, nostalgia, and cars that represent the ultimate expression of their era: 1959 Cadillac’s fins, Aston Lagonda’s wedge styling. Don’t underestimate the cyclical nature of fashion: at one time, the Lamborghini Countach was seen as the car you buy if you can’t afford a new Lambo.Four-door cars have historically underperformed, but the Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II shows a sea change. Perhaps that’s because, for the first time, many of the most desirable cars of the last 40 years were saloons: Lotus Carlton, BMW M5, etc. Provenance of the marque plays a role — but it’s not a guarantee (hello, Ferrari 308 GT4), but speed and experience almost always win. Speed alone isn’t enough, because as cars get faster and faster, the experience is what becomes dominant. The same go for looks: great looks are necessary for collectibility but certainly not sufficient. At the end of the day, Derek always counsels his clients to drive what makes them happy. Then, even if the car’s value doesn’t skyrocket, the ownership experience alone is enough to make it all worthwhile. What an out-of-character optimistic view from a true curmudgeon. This week, Derek and Jason discuss every generation of the Chevrolet Corvette while ogling beautiful sculpts made by Amalgam Collection. Derek explains that the C1 Corvette, in all of its various bodies, was perhaps better to look at than to drive, with a solid rear axle and (in early versions) a truckish straight-six engine. Jason hasn’t driven one, but feels like the Corvette recipe wasn’t fully baked until the C2 Corvette, which has perhaps the best-feeling manual-transmission shifter in history.The C3 has amazing door handles and voluptuous Ferrari-esque fenders; the C4 was 1980s angularly stunning, and introduced the ZR-1, the Corvette From Hell, with its 4-cam, Lotus-designed, Mercury Marine-built 32-valve V-8. The C5 resurrected the Z06 option code from the 1960s, and the C6 was genuinely great to drive at the limit. Especially in outrageous ZR1 form, which used a supercharged V8 whose scream was only matched by those of the passenger.It all came together with the C7, the first Corvette to be competitive on a world stage in all ways, including its interior. Still not a match for the more-expensive European stuff, it was a pleasure to drive in its distinctly American way: gruff, rough, heavy-handed and very, very fun.The C8’s departure goes way deeper than its switch to a mid-engine layout. All of its controls are light and delicate, and its dual-clutch automatic transmission so smooth and deliberate that it feels synthetic. Just like the sound of its small-block engine, which is now artificiially piped through the stereo speakers. Jason insists the Chevy Small Block is the best-sounding V-8 in the world and Derek doesn’t seem to disagree. But the C8’s understeer is enough to make him think twice before recommending it, even though we know forthcoming Corvette C8 hybrids will have torque-vectoring electric all-wheel-drive. And last but not least, the boys discuss model cars: is it better to have literal models that match the real-world thing, or artistic interpretations? One works better in a garage or man-cave, the other is perhaps more appropriate on a coffee table. There is some variation between cars when new, but it’s minimal — the big difference comes from how they’re treated by their owners. And, perhaps more important, the competence level of the mechanic works on them. Derek postulates that one-owner cars are often some of the best, because that person paid full new price for the car and treats it as such; subsequent owners who purchased at a discount might treat it as a cheap used car. The flip-side is that some problems crop up gradually, so the owner might not notice.Both Carmudgeons have driven good and bad examples of many cars — from W124 Mercedes to Ferrari 308 GT4s. And the variation between them is huge. This is another reason why Jason doesn’t want anyone to drive his Scirocco: maybe they’ll realize it’s not perfect. After all, running over zombies might damage the cooling system on your venerable Mercedes W123—which otherwise will be the official car of the cockroach, long after all other life forms on Earth have ended.Surely we all know (except Derek) that Zombie Apocalypse vehicles need to be diesels, lest the zombies deactivate your spark-ignition system with their ray-guns.
