When discussing solutions to combat emissions in the energy sector, many avoid bringing up nuclear energy due to the controversy surrounding it. Is nuclear energy bad? Could it be a part of a greener future? Why is it so controversial? We will answer these questions and more in this episode. Here, I explain what nuclear energy is, the pros and cons relating to it, as well as some of the history behind it.Sources: Union of Concerned Scientists: https://www.ucsusa.org/resources/how-nuclear-power-worksEnergy Sage:https://www.energysage.com/about-clean-energy/nuclear-energy/pros-and-cons-nuclear-energy/US Department of Energyhttps://www.energy.gov/ne/articles/5-problems-you-didnt-know-nuclear-could-solveWorld Nuclear AssociationUranium Mining: https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/nuclear-fuel-cycle/mining-of-uranium/uranium-mining-overview.aspxNuclear Waste: https://world-nuclear.org/nuclear-essentials/what-is-nuclear-waste-and-what-do-we-do-with-it.aspxInternational Atomic Energy Agency:France and Nuclear Energy: https://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/frances-efficiency-in-the-nuclear-fuel-cycle-what-can-oui-learnNuclear Fuel Cycle: https://www.iaea.org/newscenter/multimedia/videos/what-is-the-nuclear-fuel-cycleEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA):https://www.epa.gov/radtown/radioactive-waste-uranium-mining-and-millingEnvironmental Information Agencyhttps://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/nuclear/nuclear-power-and-the-environment.phpAtomic Heritage Foundation:https://www.atomicheritage.org/history/nuclear-reactor-accidents-history-and-legaciesMusic:“News Theme” by Kevin MacLeod licensed under CC BY. Episode 19: The Ocean

2021-02-0519:501

To say that humans are reliant on the ocean is an understatement; civilization as we know it would have been impossible without the use (and often times misuse) of it. Though we may not realize it, we also rely on the ocean to store a massive amount of heat and greenhouse gases. But, how much longer can the ocean keep up with this major task? What are the effects of this? In this episode, we talk about the ocean's role in fighting global warming, how global warming is affecting the ocean, and more. World Wildlife Fund: https://www.worldwildlife.org/stories/how-climate-change-relates-to-oceansWorld Economic Forum: https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2019/03/oceans-do-us-a-huge-service-by-absorbing-nearly-a-third-of-global-co2-emissions-but-at-what-costNational Aeronautics and Space Administration:https://climate.nasa.gov/news/58/with-a-pinch-of-salt/National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association: https://www.noaa.gov/education/resource-collections/ocean-coasts/ocean-acidificationInternational Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN)Ocean Stratification: https://www.iucn.org/resources/issues-briefs/ocean-and-climate-change Warming of Ocean: https://www.iucn.org/resources/issues-briefs/ocean-warmingECO Magazine:https://www.ecomagazine.com/news/oceans/the-ocean-has-become-more-stratified-with-global-warming-study-revealsNational Geographic:https://www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2018/01/climate-change-suffocating-low-oxygen-zones-ocean/Inside Climate News: https://insideclimatenews.org/news/16052018/fish-species-climate-change-migration-pacific-northwest-alaska-atlantic-gulf-maine-cod-pollock/Greenpeace:https://www.greenpeace.org/eastasia/blog/6119/what-is-coral-what-are-the-causes-impacts-and-solutions-of-coral-bleaching/Music:“News Theme” by Kevin MacLeod licensed under CC BY. One of the most common topics that comes up anytime anyone talks about global warming is fossil fuels and their impact on the environment. But, what is a fossil fuel? Why are they so bad? Is the talk about more than just climate change? All of these questions and more will be answered in this three part series about fossil fuels. In this episode, we discuss the basics of fossil fuels and then talk about coal, the dirtiest of the fossil fuels. Even though they are the most unknown Greenhouse Gases, Fluorinated Gases are the strongest greenhouse gases with warming capabilities thousands of times stronger than Carbon Dioxide. In this episode, I discuss what Fluorinated Gases are, where they come from, and how we can stop them from being emitted. Even though it is known as laughing gas, the threat nitrous oxide poses to our environment is no laughing matter. Stronger than both Methane and Carbon Dioxide, Nitrous Oxide is a dangerous greenhouse gas. This episode is about why it is dangerous, where it is coming from, and what can be done to avoid emissions.Links To Sources:Nitrous Oxide:https://www.carbonbrief.org/nitrous-oxide-emissions-could-double-by-2050-study-findshttps://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/overview-greenhouse-gaseshttps://www.eia.gov/environment/emissions/ghg_report/ghg_nitrous.phphttps://insideclimatenews.org/news/11092019/nitrous-oxide-climate-pollutant-explainer-greenhouse-gas-agriculture-livestock Ozone Layer:https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17698-laughing-gas-is-biggest-threat-to-ozone-layer/ Agriculture/Manure:https://academic.oup.com/af/article/9/1/69/5173494https://theconversation.com/nitrogen-pollution-the-forgotten-element-of-climate-change-69348https://ucanr.edu/sites/Nutrient_Management_Solutions/stateofscience/Nitrous_Oxide__In_focus/http://www.ghgonline.org/nitrousagri.htm Industrial Processes:https://www.gasmet.com/applications/emissions/fertilizer-and-nitric-acid-production/http://wedocs.unep.org/handle/20.500.11822/8489Music:“News Theme” by Kevin MacLeod licensed under CC BY.
