Howdy! We're back with Episode 7: Welcome to Biology courses online! Our department chair David Etheredge joins us this week to discuss what's going on in the Biology Department in light of the #Coronavirus outbreaks and we talk specifically about the rapid transition that has occurred to allow our students to finish their semester online. We look at what it's taken to make this transition possible (our awesome SPC staff and colleagues) as well as discussing what our students can expect. One thing we really want to communicate to our students is that you can do this and we are here to help you make it through this trying time. It's not perfect, but we want to reassure you that this can work and you can finish this semester just as strong as you began. We give pointers, share advice to help students start this journey on the right foot and talk about what we'll be doing to help you along the way.  Check out the links below to find out more about Catabolic Conversations and connect with your hosts, Kristin and Megan. Click on the links below for more information about this episode:Catabolic Conversations Matt Hamilton's Spotlight ProfileSPC Biology DepartmentFacebook: Catabolic ConversationsInstagram: @CatabolicConvosTwitter: @CatabolicConvosThanks so much for listening to the show and please give us feedback! Happy St. Patrick's Day! We're back with Episode 6: Alumni Interview #1. In this episode, we are visiting with former SPC Texans about life after South Plains College. Our friends Matt Hamilton, Amanda Newman, and Rebecca Scott were able to sit down with us at the 2020 meeting of the Texas Society of Mammalogists in Junction, TX. They spoke with us about what they've been up to since leaving SPC, what the wish they would have known when they were still our students, and they share some advice for current Texans to consider as they're making that transition to their next institution. We love hearing from our former students and they share some pretty excellent tips for you all. You'll noticed this is Alumni Interview #1 - we loved it so much, we are definitely going to do it again! Look for another episode in the future where we will spotlight another set of alums!Check out the links below to find out more about Catabolic Conversations and connect with your hosts, Kristin and Megan. Hey everybody! We're back with Episode 5: Cellular Respiration - How your body uses oxygen to make the energy you need. In this episode, we break down the topic of aerobic cellular respiration in detail and discuss how this process works to take the food molecules you eat to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy molecule of the cell. We also examine how changes in your body can affect this process, from holding your breath to rigorous exercise. We even touch on the role of lactic acid production in muscle cells and what is really happening as your body is making this material.  Check out the links below to find out more about Catabolic Conversations and connect with your hosts, Kristin and Megan. Catabolic Conversations: http://www.southplainscollege.edu/catabolicconversations/SPC Biology Department: https://www.southplainscollege.edu/exploreprograms/artsandsciences/biology.phpFacebook: Catabolic ConversationsInstagram: @CatabolicConvosTwitter: @CatabolicConvosThanks so much for listening to the show and please give us feedback!
