Season 3 Episode 3 How to Build Global Teams Welcome to Episode 3 of Season 3! This week, AMSE CEO Moni Jefferson talks to the owners of Wise Advise and Assist Team - Deputy Director Laura Early and Executive Director Diana Jaquith. Wise Advise and Assist Team is a virtual assisting agency powered by military and veteran spouses. The experience and knowledge Diana and Laura bring in this subject are priceless! This episode will not only give you tools you can immediately put to use, but  Here are some other things you’ll hear about on the podcast:  The size of your global team doesn’t matter  Your techniques and communications within your team are crucial. If you have feedback to give to someone within your team, give it directly to them while you’re dealing with it. Don’t talk about it with others. That’s not going to build a team.   Let each other know how you best receive communication. Take the time to learn this about yourself and your team; this will eliminate a breakdown in communication.   Be clear and concise in your communication.  Being a good communicator isn’t just about speaking; it means you need to be a good listener.  You are establishing norms within your team. Not just what’s normal for you, but your collective team.   Don’t expect to get right every time. Keep listening and understand where the other person is coming from. Don’t project your communication methods on the other person. Respect who they are and their methods.   Your communication will change as your company grows. Communication tools:  Slack Project manager software  Email software Anything that helps your team collaborate more efficiently and effectively.  Know the direction you want your team to go. If you’re going to grow, make sure you choose the right tools around that rather than your immediate needs. Look at the forecast of your business. Be respectful of other's schedules, especially when it’s non-work hours.    Trust starts at the top and being vulnerable.  Celebrate the behaviors that you want to see again. For example, when a team member does something you, as the leader, didn’t know how to do, celebrate that.    If you’re new to Owning Up, make sure and subscribe, so you’ll know when a new episode drops. Breaking Bread with AMSE Welcome to the first-ever Thanksgiving episode! Moni and Flossie wanted this episode to feel like a gathering place for friends and like-minded people, so the AMSE team members joined in! But we wouldn’t be AMSE without you, so pull your chair up to the table and join in on the discussion.  What are some of your favorite family traditions & recipes? Rachel Carpenter, Copy Editor, has a super-secret stuffing recipe that she won’t share with anyone, but she will make and share that with you! And when she’s near her mother and family, they get together the night before Thanksgiving and prepare the turkey together. Military life being what it is, she doesn’t always get to be with her family. But she is grateful for technology because it enables her to be a part of the tradition she loves.    Selena Conmackie, Ft. Hood Chapter Leader, is from Hawaii, and for her, pumpkin crunch (also called pumpkin dump cake) is her must-have Thanksgiving tradition. But the funny part about this tradition is every year she asks her friend for the recipe. Just asking her friend for the recipe has become a part of the tradition around the yummy dessert! Here is the recipe if you would like to try it:  Pumpkin Crunch Recipe.   Kat Calvo, Partnerships Manager, is all about the pumpkin crunch, too! And traditionally, her family also makes it. Around noon, she usually starts drinking Coquito. Plus, she wraps and stuffs her turkey with bacon. That’s right, bacon. She said it’s her husband’s favorite way to eat it: Bacon-Wrapped Turkey.   Adam Evans, Luke AFB Chapter Leader, always hosts a Friendsgiving at their house the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. They have a game they play called Play it Forward. The day of, they all arise very early to begin the game. The game requires a deck of cards, with each card having a specific task: take a selfie with a stranger, complete this riddle, overtip your server, and so on. The tasks are straightforward, and part of the idea is to go to every local business throughout the city. Once the task is completed, the player logs in their deck of cards with the number on the bottom of the deck into an app to keep track of the card. Next, the player leaves the card they have completed with that person they met, and that person can enter the card’s number into the game. They’ve been playing this game for the past six years. Some of the cards have traveled 1.2 million miles! Here is the game: Sneaky Cards Game.   Christinna Kitchaiya, Social Media Strategist, says that she used to be traditional in her meal. But her husband is from Thailand, and now that they have traveled the world, their dinner consists of all sorts of flavors from around the globe! Plus, they like to invite people who don’t have a family to share the holiday with their home.   Moni Jefferson, Co-founder, and CEO used to have a very traditional meal and still does, but now she likes to order out. However, she does make traditional Puerto Rican rice called Arroz con Gandules (rice with pigeon peas). Her family used to get dressed up for Thanksgiving, but now they wear Christmas PJs all day and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.    Anna Larson, Ft. Hood Chapter Leader, has a huge extended family. We’re talking sixty 1st cousins, and they always got together for Thanksgiving. Her uncle was a gym teacher at a high school. When she was younger, the entire family would meet at the gym and use the commercial kitchen to prepare the meal. And for some reason, because she’s not sure how or why it started, there would be homemade pinatas for the children and the teens. The ones for the teens were always harder to get open. But by the end of the day, there would be piles of candy everywhere! The pinata tradition has stayed with her.     Flossie Hall, Co-founder, and COO grew up in a very small town with very traditional foods. It wasn’t until she became a military spouse and was introduced to all the diversity within the Thanksgiving holiday that she realized all the good food she could add to her meal! She still serves traditional dishes but enjoys other dishes as well. As the neighborhood cook, she enjoys inviting others over, especially soldiers with no one to share the holiday with, to share with her family of 6 for the holiday.     Caroline Schafer, the podcast editor, grew up with the regular traditional foods and loves to make and serve them. But having a son with Celiac’s disease means she has learned to tweak as many recipes as she can. Plus, even though it’s not Christmas, she likes to eat on her Spode Christmas china because it reminds her of her Mimi, who is no longer with her, and Spode was the china she used for the holidays.    Each team member took some time to answer some This or That questions. We’d love to hear what you have to say!  Sweet potatoes and yams - which is your favorite? Or are you like the AMSE team, and you aren’t sure of the difference?  Canned cranberry or fresh cranberry sauce?  Stuffing or dressing? Fun fact (because we found out some of the team didn’t know this): stuffing is what you stuff a turkey with, and dressing is served in a dish on the side.  Cook or take-out? Everyone cooks. Mostly.  Paper plates or China?  Pecan or pumpkin pie?    Of course, a Thanksgiving podcast wouldn’t be the same if each of us didn’t share what we’re grateful for this year. Even with all that 2020 has brought us, each of us shares our unique and heartfelt gratitude. Of course, one of those things we are all grateful for is you!    If you’re new to Owning Up, make sure and subscribe, so you’ll know when a new episode drops. Happy Birthday, AMSE!

Happy Birthday, AMSE!

2020-11-2439:04

Happy Birthday, AMSE!  Welcome to this special episode where we celebrate the first anniversary of AMSE! Co-founders Flossie Hall and Moni Jefferson share what has happened in just one year, from ideation to the platform that AMSE is now. Plus, since it is a birthday celebration, they have some surprises to share that are gifts to all of you!  AMSE was born because, as military spouse entrepreneurs, Moni and Flossie experienced a lack of support and guidance. They noticed that other military spouse entrepreneurs dealt with the same kind of frustration within the military community. Thus, they made the joint decision to create an organization where military spouse entrepreneurs could go for support, regardless of the stage of their business. They created a social impact agency of entrepreneurs leading entrepreneurs.  Here are some other things you’ll hear on the podcast:  There are now 1,400 members of AMSE and we are still growing!  AMSE partners with other grassroots organizations built by and run by military spouses.  Grassroots are so influential. You can’t be at the top and not know the needs of those at the bottom.   We listen to the needs of the members through surveys and by talking to them.  How to feel confident where you are so you can PCS your business.  Transparency is essential, and coming soon will be the numbers from AMSE’s impact report. Because AMSE spends money on what’s necessary, such as lean technology, paying military spouses to build an educational curriculum, and paying military spouses to serve as team members creates an economic impact within the military spouse entrepreneur community.  AMSE’s website has 28,000 curriculum downloads. Members have access to 65 worksheets, 38 LIVE Masterclasses, one-on-one mentors, and Slack channels with peer to peer connection.  MSEG Guide with Stars and Stripes was a massive win for AMSE, and the next guide is already in development. The success isn’t just for AMSE, though. It’s also for the partners, the spouses that believe in AMSE and need AMSE.  USAA and Amazon Military have been the most prominent supporters from the beginning of AMSE.  Now time for the surprises! The first surprise is that AMSE, WiseAdvise, and InstantTeamz have created the AMSE Alliance, which will advocate for change, draw awareness to barriers, and create opportunities for military spouse business owners.  The next surprise is the Remote Revolution coming January 27-28, 2021. This 100% virtual platform will include three pillars: freelancing and remote work opportunities, entrepreneurship, and living well. There will be breakout workshops, networking, one-on-one sessions, and more! Participants will walk away with confidence, knowledge, and connection.  The third announcement is that the AMSE membership dashboard is getting a complete glow-up to include a Milspouse Market Place, a place for you to showcase your business, products, or service. Plus, it will consist of a Member Directory with a personal networking profile that allows you to find other military spouses to collaborate with, hire, look for a job, and more!  If you’re new to Owning Up, make sure and subscribe, so you’ll know when a new episode drops. Season 2 Special Holiday Entrepreneur Tips Episode Welcome to the Special Holiday Entrepreneur Tips Episode of Owning Up! Flossie and Moni share their insights into getting through the holiday season as an entrepreneur.  This year has been unusual, to say the least. But certain things about an entrepreneur’s life never change, and the holidays can add additional stressors. How does the entrepreneur best prepare to face this time of year without losing focus on their business, themselves, and their family?  Moni and Flossie share that reformatting how you used to do things during the holidays may need to change this year, and it’s OK. Allow yourself grace and know that you have support within the AMSE community for all that you’re going through.  Here are some other things you’ll hear about on the podcast:  Take time for yourself. Your internal health is essential, and so are all of the things in your external life. Find time to recharge. Know what works best for you.  See how much you can plan for, including your personal life. Everything from shopping to decorating: put it on your calendar and make sure it’s synced to all your calendars. You’re honoring your time and your family’s time.  Do you have family coming into town or are visiting family? Set boundaries if you have to work. Be clear about the time you will be working and allow yourself to do that.  Don’t be afraid to take extra time off this year if you can afford to. Reset and recharge to prepare for 2021. It’s an excellent time to meal plan. This will save you time and keep you from unnecessary stress. Go through the cupboards and make sure you have what you need. Don’t be afraid to pre-purchase food, meals, or whatever you need to make your holiday season less stressful.  Do some extra holiday stuff for you and your family this year. If it makes you happy, do it! If you’re new to Owning Up, make sure and subscribe so you’ll know when a new episode drops. You can also join the Facebook group to see what other milspouse entrepreneurs are up to and receive the latest AMSE news. Hello listeners! I’m Caroline Schafer, the Podcast Producer for AMSE.  We are just past the halfway mark with Season 2, and what an incredibly informative season we’ve had so far! Episode one started us off celebrating the momentous publication Military Spouse Entrepreneur Guide in partnership with Stars and Stripes! You can read the digital guide online and check your local military base for a copy of the paper publication, or you can request a guide by email.  Episode two is all about the highs and lows of being an entrepreneur.  Moni and Flossie shared their coping mechanisms for the lows, plus other helpful insights regarding sharing on outlets such as social media and such. Plus, entrepreneur Chavah Grant shares how she realized her gifts and turned them into her own successful business - Vida Chic Weddings.   Episode three shares how to keep the naysayers at bay and why it’s important who you talk to about your dream to be an entrepreneur. Military spouse Adam Evans, an entrepreneur trailblazer, loves his current venture with Instant Handz. Adam shares that his “why” isn’t about money; it’s about community.  Episode four explains why doing business the AMSE worked so well for Flossie and Moni that they created the AMSE platform for military spouse entrepreneurs to have a place to learn, grow, and launch their business. Military Spouse Entrepreneur highlight for this episode is Eloise Drain. In 2008 when Eloise set out to start a business, Family Inceptions, to assist families having fertility issues, she also experienced a lack of guidance when starting her business.  Hear how, in the past year, Eloise found the resources and community of support she needs within AMSE.  We are in a time where remote work is more popular than ever! And episode five shares why this is nothing new for the military spouse. This episode also offers some great information from Laura Early, Deputy Director of Wise Advise and Assist Team. Laura talks about how and why she and her business partner, Diana Jaquith, started their business. Want to start a business but don’t know where to start? Episode six is definitely for you! Moni and Flossie share nuggets of information about how to start a business from the ground up! And for extra encouragement, Monica Fullerton, creator of Spouse-ly, talks about her journey of starting her business less than a year ago and what she’s done to pivot and grow her business.   Speaking of pivoting, episode seven is all about how, when, and why to pivot as an entrepreneur. Plus, you’ll hear about Gold Star Spouse Allison Banholzer’s ability to persevere and pivot three times.  Episode eight is all about utilizing your gifts and talents to unlock your business idea. And entrepreneur Brittany Rhodes did precisely that! She turned her natural gift into a business.  These highlighted entrepreneurs’ stories and more can be found in the MSEG Guide - either digitally or in print. One of the things I love about AMSE is that there isn’t just one thing. Co-founders Flossie and Moni have purposefully designed the website and information to be continually relevant to the military spouse entrepreneur. For example, whether you’re a Freemium member or a Premium member, there were a ton of resources on the AMSE blog page!  How to launch and grow your email list Anyone can create passive income - even you!  Let’s talk about Slack! Everyone’s starting a podcast. Should I?  Five businesses you can start today as a military spouse!  There are so many other great topics on the blog page, so you’ll want to check them all out!  And the month of November looks to be just as inspiring as October was! Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming up:  The week of the 2nd through the 5th is a busy week for AMSE!  Moni and Flossie hit the ground running with the first EVER National Veterans Small Business Week. The week of free webcasts includes presentations, virtual networking, mini-grants, and more!  Our cofounders will be giving an incredible workshop coming up on November 4th with CareerSource NE, Florida. CareerSourceNEFL will be hosting its annual Paychecks for Patriots Career Fair the week of November 4th for Valor's month. Please join in the incredible virtual workshops they have lined up with the Military Spouse Employment Advocacy Program in the state of Florida. November 5th is a full day for AMSE!  First up is AMSE’s Monthly Facebook Live event featuring two exceptional guests: Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center and Global Entrepreneurship Network. You definitely want to add this to your watch list.  November 5th is also the monthly New Member’s Orientation. Whether you’re cofounders and members, it’s the time to ask questions and learn more about all AMSE has to offer.  Also, on November 5th is a Bonus Master Class with Streamyard. Join Marisa Cali as she covers the seven keys to live stream confidently. For those of you who are content creators, influencers, or have a brand, this master class will help you gain the confidence you need to continue growing your business and skillset.  November 10 brings us another excellent master class. This class is with Tailwind! Melissa Megginson talks about how to boost your business with Pinterest and Instagram.  November 13th is a great day to learn all about Zapier in our Master Class. Hosted by Andrew Edelman, the Head of Strategic Alliances, Andrew will share how Zapier is the tool for efficiently managing a project or team, how to be a pro at remote meetings, and more! If you’re all about efficiency, this is a Master Class you want to put on your calendar!  November 19th is an extraordinary day here at AMSE because it’s the day AMSE was officially launched! We’d love for you to join us on social media and wish Moni and Flossie a very happy AMSE first birthday!  First-ever 2020 Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide with our partner The Military Mom Collective.  If you want a way to connect with other AMSE members, we have launched Community Chapters at a base near you!
