Description

We, Hans Polzer, MD and Sebastian F. Baumbach, MD, are two academic orthopedic ankle surgeons currently working at the Department of General, Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Hospital, LMU Munich.Compared to other joints the specialization in the field of foot and ankle surgery was delayed. Nevertheless, during the last 2 or 3 decades, more and more research regarding the ankle is advancing. On one hand today, we observe an exponential growth in studies and knowledge, while on the other hand work is being increasingly condensed. Therefore, it becomes challenging to keep track of new developments and publications in the field of ankle surgery. In order stay up to date, we decided to start a podcast on this topic. We designed a search strategy for Medline, which will identify the relevant articles in the top journals every month. Based on these, we will pick 3-4 studies, which will be presented and discussed in each podcast.

We hope you enjoy this session as much as we did!
This is a very special episode for us! We were invited by Prof. Charlie Saltzman to discuss one of our latest publications: "Compensation of Dynamic Fixation Systems in the Quality of Reduction of the Distal Tibiofibular Joint in Acute Syndesmotic Complex Injuries: A CT-Based Analysis" published in the November Episode of Foot and Ankle International. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did!
This episode is part of a break-out session of a webinar of the German Association of Foot and Ankle Surgery. We are honored to host Prof. Dr. Becher and talk to him about his award winning publication entitled "Arthroscopic microfracture vs. arthroscopic autologous matrixinduced chondrogenesis for the treatment of articular cartilage defects of the talus" published in KSSTA in 2018. We cover different treatment strategies for (osteo)chondral defects. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did!The episode is officially sponsored by Geistlich, who did not have any involvement in the planing, production or final approval of this episode.
This time we have Prof. Dr. Nasef with us. He is a Professor of Orthopedics and Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgery at the Cairo University and was the First Non-European and first Egyptian to become Member of the AFAS section of the ESSKA.We discuss Dr. Nasef's recently published study “Endoscopic Flexor Hallucis Longus Transfer for the Management of Acute Achilles Tendon Ruptures in Professional Soccer Players” published in Foot & Ankle International. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did!

Welcome back to Ankle Surgery Update – Science Guiding Treatment! We know that we have been offline for quite a while. But we have been merging our orthopaedic and trauma departments and restructure our new Musculusceletal University Cluster. We are all the more happy to pick up our podcast to stay connected with you all. This time, we got Tim Schepers with us. A Trauma Surgeon at the AMC Trauma Unit Amsterdam with an exceptional experience in complex foot and ankle injuries and their residuals. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers. The paper we would love to discuss with him today has just been published in the Bone and Joint Journal and is entitled: “Functional outcome of routine versus on-demand removal of the syndesmotic screw: a multicenter randomized controlled trial”.
This time, we are especially excited as we are having two awesome guests with us, Benedikte Ræder and Mette Andersen. They are the first and senior authors of two of the most outstanding trials comparing suture button stabilization to single syndesmotic screw fixation in unstable syndesmotic injuries. One study is entitled “Randomized trial comparing suture button with single 3.5 mm syndesmotic screw for ankle syndesmosis injury: similar results at 2 years.” published in the Acta Orthopaedica and the other RCT is entitled “Better outcome for suture button compared with single syndesmotic screw for syndesmosis injury: five-year results of a randomized controlled trial”  published in the Bone and Joint Journal.  As indicated in the title of the two studies, they found conflicting results. And today we have the great privilege to discuss these with them.
