On this episode I discuss, somewhat vaguely, the difference between corporate pride and the riot. Divergent topics include my roots, actions before stonewall, historical conflation and the difference between the gays and the queers. I also get a bit worked up.  (there are some mic pops at the beginning, sorry!)NOTES AND RESOURCESIndian Residential Schools Survivors Society - https://www.irsss.caNYSHN - https://nativeyouthsexualhealth.comThe Residential School System in “Canada” - https://indigenousfoundations.arts.ubc.ca/the_residential_school_system/Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls - https://www.mmiwg-ffada.caUNDRIP - https://www.un.org/development/desa/indigenouspeoples/declaration-on-the-rights-of-indigenous-peoples.htmlBreaking the Silence - https://www.bctf.ca/uploadedFiles/Public/AboriginalEd/PoH/BreakingTheSilence.pdfDead but Delicious - https://daemonumx.substack.com@daemonumx [instagram/twitter]Support the show

Episode 7 - Dispatches

Hi! Hello! This episode, we introduce a new segment: DISPATCHES.Last week, I reached out and asked you to submit voice recordings answering and expanding on some questions as a starting off point; a place from which you could branch out and move the narrative in the direction that felt important to you.  I asked you: What do you love about being femme or butch? If you don’t align with or identify as femme or butch, what do these genders or gender expressions mean to you in an historical context, or when thinking about our elders? What is hard for you about being femme or butch in a contemporary context? And lastly, who are your femme and butch roots? And golly, did you deliver!  Thank you to Stevie, René, Ziya, Lianne and Arti for being so generous with your time and insight. I'm deeply moved and charmed by your offerings.Don't worry if you missed this week! Submissions are ongoing. In this episode, we discuss the intersections of Judy Holliday, the origin of the bimbo/dumb blonde character and the femme/butch bar scene in 1940s-50s Greenwich Village, New York City. I get very invested and fall so deep into the rabbit hole that I can barely conceal how hard I'm swooning. Everything ends abruptly, but in a satisfying way. Like bubble tea. Support the show
Assigned female at birth, Catalina (Antonio) de Erauso was held in a convent, destined to become a nun – until she turned 15, cut her hair short, refashioned her habit into masculine clothing and escaped to a life of adventure. The highly controversial history of Erauso’s memoir was so wild that it is thought to be mostly fictional. For this episode, a donation was made to Rainbow Railroad,  an organization based out of Toronto that provides "solutions for LGBTQI people who need immediate assistance because they are facing a serious threat to their lives and safety".SUPPORT US ON PATREON!!!SOURCESRia Brodell - Butch Heroes [also check out their “the handsome and the holy” series]Jody M Caldwell on Catalina De Erauso as 10th Muse Catalina De Erauso Encyclopedia.com The Legacy Project: Antonio de ErausoWikipedia - Catalina De Erauso1-26 Variato 25 a 2 Clav - Kimiko Ishizaka from the Open Goldberg VariationsSupport the show
Boom, we finally did an interview.  And we struck gold with the delightful and brilliant Carmen Maria Machado, author of Her Body and Other Parties [Graywolf Press] and In The Dream House [Graywolf Press]. We discuss her book, her research, puzzles and very gay movies.CONTENT WARNING: Discussions of domestic, queer and partner violence. This week we made a contribution to the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape [link in resources].RESOURCES:Machado's resources for queer survivorsLGBTQ Youth LineTrans LifelineRAINNToronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against RapeLGBTQ Crisis Hotline and ServicesNational Domestic Violence Hotline Maggie's Toronto Sex Worker Action ProjectOther Resources for LGBTQ2SNB abuse survivorsALL MUSIC SOURCED FROM THE FREE MUSIC ARCHIVEElvis Herod - Feed Me to the LesbiansKai Engel - HomeroadSupport the show
Hiiiiiii we did it again!  Sorry for the delay but there's a pandemic going on, so, you know. In this episode we jump all over the place but mostly, we talk about the light and the dark sides of the early 20th century classic lesbian novel "The Well of Loneliness" by Radclyffe Hall.  We're up, we're down, I forgot important details, I also have opinions I don't get into and I live google the Hicklin Test.  It's the gentlest wild ride of your life.SOURCES:Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers: A History of Lesbian Life in Twentieth-Century America: Lambda Literary Award winning book by Lillian FadermanThe Well of LonelinessRadclyffe HallThe Hicklin TestFemme: Feminists, Lesbians & Bad Girls - Ed. Hiiiiiiiiiii, welcome back! On this episode, I rattle on about a few things. First, I go through some Butch and Femme basics and start to sound off and then stop myself because it's. So. Complex.  Then I give you a very brief biography of my Butch story. Big yawn.  THEN I get to the good stuff:  Edythe Eyde [aka Lisa Ben], creator of the first lesbian newsletter Vice Versa, in 1947! Also, complete babe and my current femme elder crush.REFERENCES:WikipediaThe ONE ArchivesMaking Gay History PodcastVice Versa OnlineBefore Stonewall. 1984 Documentary directed by Greta Schiller and Robert RosenbergTheme music is "Throw Me to the Lesbians" by Elvis Herod, courtesy of the Free Music Archive.  Interior music is "Shipping Lanes" by Chad Crouch, courtesy of the Free Music ArchiveSupport the show

Just diving in after having your podcast recommended to me following one of my drunken rants along the lines of "where did all the old fashioned gays go?" I'm an early thirties stone butch who regularly feels like I'm just staring into a sea of complicated, nuanced, young gender queers to whom I'll never be able to relate. Feeling very chuffed and relieved to not feel as archaic while listening to this. PS: Just Google imaged Stormé. What a fly as f*** stud.
