Shades of Crime

Daniel Pickett and Trevor Hamlin were two young men from Newfoundland Canada who both disappeared under very mysterious circumstances, leaving behind a few pieces of puzzling evidence and even more questions. This week's episode looks into the 2006 disappearance of 25 year old Daniel Pickett and the 2018 disappearance of 33 year old Trevor Hamlin.

The province of PEI is known for its low crime rates and strong sense of community, so while the province only has three active missing persons cases, each has profoundly impacted the people of PEI. This episode covers the disappearances of Steven O'Brien, Stacey McKinnon-Smith and Theresa Ann Gregory.

Between 1928 and 1947, the Ideal Maternity Home was operating out of Chester Nova Scotia, a maternity home which boasted highly confidential maternity care for unwed mothers. These cases keep getting more and more twisted and confusing and the sheer volume of them is making it hard to deny a theme in the disappearances.

These men share similar characteristics and each case appears so similar that it is almost impossible to question whether they are somehow linked. What happens when an article singling out members of the LGBTQ is published in a highly conservative country, the article forms a type of hitlist. The unauthorized Ugandan newspaper called the Rollingstone (not associated with the American magazine) published an article in 2010 entitled "Pictures of Uganda's Top 100 Homos" and stamped on the cover image was a message saying "hang them" so it is no surprise that this publication had terrible ramifications in a country where homosexuality is against the law.

The LGBTQ community is frequently targeted in violent attacks and those attacks disproportionately impact trans and gender non-conforming people and even more so when the person is black. So this episode is looking into the murders to two black trans women back in 2019 that have no garnered the attention that they deserve and still remain unsolved to this day. Trans and gender non-conforming people frequently lose family and close attachments to people they held before coming out and that means that frequently there are not enough people to advocate for them. That's why we need to make our voices heard, these cases can be solved with enough pressure on those handling the cases. Teach the world that murdering black trans people will be treated as murder.

While on her way to work, Elizabeth Gale Tucker vanished and with each passing day, more questions arose. But no one could have imagined that her case was the first in a seemingly unconnected set of crimes across Canada.
