Description

Extinction Rebellion NYC talks with experts, citizens, and rebels from the frontlines, diving deep into the climate and ecological emergency, the need for a regenerative culture and transition, and why we need to ACT NOW! Extinction Rebellion is a global nonviolent movement to compel the world’s governments to address the climate and ecological emergency. We demand that the government and media Tell the Truth, that the government Act Now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gases and that a Citizens Assembly be established to decide policy on a Just Transition for all.

In this episode we are sharing our first event from Conversations on the Anthropocene, an online discussion series meant to open a space to have the difficult discussions about climate change.  In this talk we had the pleasure of welcoming two exciting and provocative writers and fellow members of XR, novelist Jenny Offill who is the author of Last Things, Department of Speculation, and most recently Weather, and author Jessi Jezewska Stevens who recently released her debut novel The Exhibition of Persephone Q.  Here Jenny and Jessi discuss climate grief, activism and the intersection of climate change and the corona virus pandemic with Extinction Rebellion.  Please support our guests by buying their books from Bookshop! Today's episode is the first in a series of conversations with members of Extinction Rebellion NYC who come from contemplative and faith traditions, speaking with insight on living with intention in the midst of uncertainty. This series was created and produced by filmmaker and XR organizer Jonathan Minard.    This first segment was recorded with Jess Serrante.    Jessica Serrante is a Co-Founder of the Radical Support Collective where she is a climate resilience coach. Jess has been a climate activist since 2007. She is a trainer, facilitator and teacher with a decade of experience leading and supporting groups of activists. Jess holds a Masters Degree in Theories of Urban Practice from Parsons School of Design, where she studied urban climate resilience.  She is a student and facilitator of Joanna Macy’s The Work That Reconnects. Jess is passionate about poetry, systems thinking, community building and aims to live her life as an answer to the question: What does it mean to live meaningfully amidst the climate crisis? Jess lives in South Brooklyn, and as a supporter of many rebels in Extinction Rebellion Jess embodies the principles of regenerative culture.    The Radical Support Collective website:  https://www.radicalsupport.org/jess  The passage read at the close of the episode is by Joanna Macy.    To learn more about XR NYC & to get involved:  https://www.xrebellion.nyc/  https://www.facebook.com/xrnyc/  https://twitter.com/xr_nyc  https://www.instagram.com/xr_nyc/    Upcoming XR NYC events:     https://www.xrebellion.nyc/events    Our email address:    XRNYC.podcast@protonmail.com   The first track of music you hear is "Fluxuations" by Dew of Light, and the second is "Lunar Glow" by Ookean.

Mobilizing through digital activism, we focus on all media platforms—from television networks to print outlets to online content providers to radio programs. We are motivated by the awareness that climate change poses a grave danger to humanity and we must transition from fossil fuels to safe energy immediately in order to preserve a planet that supports civilization. Our mission relies on the premise that the news media has a professional responsibility to cover climate change accurately and that remaining silent about climate change in stories about its causes and effects is a form of malpractice.  Music from King Scratch and the Bay Street Boys off of the record Let's Go Calypso.
