The disagreement about the German clay being faster was interesting. In any case, I had a theory that John McEnroe had just played too many matches over the year, and had too many wins, which caused too many matches, up until early June 1984. The Dusseldorf final was the day before the French Open first round. I speculate that had he clearly lost to Lendl at Dusseldorf due to being tired (or somehow tanked the match), he wouldn't have been mentally tired in the third set of the French Open. Anyway the Lendl interview here was great and I can't think of much else I'd have asked him in the given time.
Fascinating how he described watching Rocky on an aeroplane and how it inspired him to greater fitness. People aren't always all that different.
