In December 2019, Sharon Guynup and Steve Winter released a feature in National Geographic Magazine documenting captive tigers across the United States. The article was both fascinating and disturbing. Captive tigers in the U.S. outnumber those in the wild. It's a problem. Reading the piece now feels almost like 'what Netflix's Tiger King should have been', a deep dive into the world of illicit animal products, exotic animal breeding, and whether captive tigers ever have a conservation value. We spoke with Sharon and Steve about the illegal wildlife trade, what's driving demand for animal products, and what their thoughts are on Tiger King as a documentary.Sharon Guynup is a journalist and author who focuses her work on environmental issues. She’s traveled widely through Asia, Latin America and Africa to cover wildlife and ecosystems, energy and climate change, and the effect pollution has on living things. For the last few years, much of her work has delved into poaching and “wildlife crime” — the lucrative, global, cartel-driven illegal wildlife trade.Steve Winter is a legendary Nat Geo photographer with a number of iconic, story-driven photos in his portfolio. Among the numerous awards Steve has won are BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year, first prize in the Nature Story category from World Press Photo— twice—and also two times Picture of the Year International’s Global Vision Award.Guests: Sharon Guynup & Steve WinterHosts: Ben Hemmings & Joe CoppolinoSupport the show (https://onetreeplanted.org/products/plant-trees)
Salima Mahamoudou's passion for restoring the Sahel radiates as she talks us through the details of WRI's African branch of their Food, Forest and Water program.Salima details the consequences of an advancing Sahara in the Sahel, and how landowners and trees play a vital role in restoring food security and preventing further desrtification. She makes the link between the degraded land and the increase of African migration to Europe and the rise of extremist groups like Boko Haram. There's no one-size-fits-all solution but Salima's energy and passion provides us with enormous hope and inspiration that erosion preventing trees and productive soils will return to the Sahel region, from Senegal, through Mali, Niger and all the way to Eritrea.Guest: Salima Mahamoudou (and Will Anderson)Hosts: Ben Hemmings and Joe CoppolinoSupport the show (https://onetreeplanted.org/products/plant-trees)
Jon Cox is an artist and photographer whose work explores themes relating to indigenous knowledge and culture around the world.Jon is a National Geographic Explorer and an assistant professor in the Department of Art at the University of Delaware. He also serves on the board of the Dorobo Fund for Tanzania and is the President of the Amazonian Centre for Environmental Education (ACEER).The first time I was connected with Jon, I encountered the work that he created with the Ese Eja in the Peruvian Amazon. I was particularly drawn to his portraits of the community members, and how his creative use of daguerreotype photographs, which uses gold and mercury in the exposure process, reflects the environmental and social challenges facing the community. The Ese Eja live in a region of Peru which supports one of the biggest illegal gold mining economies in the world. We spoke with Jon about his work, what drives him, and how he communicates environmental destruction through creative choices in his art.Guest: Jon CoxHosts: Ben Hemmings and Joe CoppolinoSupport the show (https://onetreeplanted.org/products/plant-trees)
