In today's episode of Psych Talk I discussed the concept of "Therapy is political". Many people have the belief that therapists and psychologists should not be political and, rather, be neutral on issues of injustice. I discuss how therapy is innately political and highlight various ethical codes that highlight therapists' ethical duties of justice, service, and advocacy. I discuss what the term "therapy is political" does not mean, as well as what it does mean. Further, I discuss client's rights when it comes to finding a therapist that aligns with them politically. Ultimately, the takeaway of this episode is that therapist is innately political and therapists remaining neutral on issues directly impacting their clients does harm, creates an unsafe space of clients who are directly negatively impacted by sociopolitical systems, and goes against what ethics require. In today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with Pam Covarrubias, a podcaster, speaker, and coach, about Calladita Culture. Pam discusses what Calladita Culture is - part of the system that has kept women small, quiet, and unaccomplished - and describes how root of Calladita Culture is Machismo and Marianismo as taught in Latin America. We discuss how these messages are passed down to women and girls of various cultures, the impact of these messages on mental health, and how these messages are damaging for women and femmes. Pam discusses her own healing from Calladita Culture and how she helps other women and femmes heal too through inner child work and EFT, also known as "tapping". In today's episode of Psych Talk, I discuss managing suicidal crises, both for mental health clinicians as well as lay people who may be in a situation in which their loved one is suicidal. I define what I mean by a suicidal crisis and discuss warning signs that may indicate a person is experiencing suicidality. I discuss the steps that clinicians may take when a client is actively suicidal, while also highlighting the importance of any clinician listening to reach out to their direct supervisor and following any practice policies and procedures. Further, I discuss what lay people can do in a situation in which a loved one is suicidal, including steps they can take to get them professional help. I highlight that no step and intervention is without potential risk and that some, such as going to the ER, can cause more trauma, while emphasizing that the goal in a suicidal crisis is to keep the individual safe and alive. We discuss what a "default parent" is and their role, the concept of not feeling like mothers are doing enough, and why previously helpful coping and stress management skills do not seem to always work when it comes to motherhood. Further, Linda provides words of encouragement for working moms, as well as as general advice for any woman who is transitioning into motherhood. In today's episode of Psych Talk, I discuss South Carolina House Bill 4624, entitled "Gender Reassignment Procedures". If you are not in South Carolina, I hope you listen to this episode and are able to take something away from it, as 321 anti-transgender bills have already been proposed across the United States in 2024. I give a brief overview of the bill, the problems with the bill, and how it will affect trans individuals, medical professionals, and mental health professions. I provide some research on outcomes of gender affirming care and how implementing this bill, and others like it, will likely cause more harm than good. Further, I give listeners action steps to oppose this, and other, bills, as well as some reflection questions for individuals to critically think on if they are in support of this or other anti-trans bills. Happy 2024! In today's episode of Psych Talk I discuss how to be mindful and intentional in the new year. So many of us set resolutions, goals, or intentions for the new year and find ourselves giving up on them within the first weeks or months of the year. This is often because the goals we set are too big or too broad, we don't have a plan for implementing them, they do not align with our values, or they don't allow for flexibility, among many other reasons. Thus I discuss how being mindful of and intentional with our behaviors in the new year and implementing small changes can not only help us sustain the changes we want to make but also increase our happiness and overall wellbeing. I discuss the top five resolutions for 2024 according to a Forbes Health survey and break down what mindfulness and intentionality may look like with regard to each of those resolutions. I also discuss other ways we can incorporate mindfulness and intentionality into our lives, the benefits of doing so, and how being mindful or intentional does not have to relate to a specific goal, but rather just be something we strive for to bring us more joy and happiness.
