The Black Phone (ENCORE)

The Black Phone (ENCORE)

2023-06-3001:17:49

Today’s show is a review and discussion of Scott Derrickson’s coming-of-age horror thriller film, The Black Phone.Joe King is an American author better known by the pen name Joe Hill.  He chose the pen name after not wanting to capitalize on his father’s name, the legendary author Stephen King.  Hill’s first novel was a collection of short stories that was first published in October 2005 in the United Kingdom titled “20th Century Ghosts.”  Saddled right in the middle of this collection is the 30-page short story called The Black Phone.  Originally published in the Autumn 2004 edition of The Third Alternative, a quarterly published high production magazine that features cutting-edge speculative fiction, The Black Phone tells the story of child abduction by a man aptly called “The Grabber.”  Trapped in a basement room, the boy’s only hope lies in a mysterious disconnected black phone that hangs on the basement wall.  When the phone rings, the child hears the whispers of the kidnapper’s previous, and now dead, victims.  Produced by horror powerhouse Blumhouse studios and distributed by Universal Pictures, Scott Derrickson's adaptation of this short story turned into a major motion picture leaned into his own middle school experience growing up in the 1970s in Denver, Colorado.  The film incorporates many items from Derrickson’s memory of that period, including the overcast skies, chain link fences, and the violence that existed for him inside and outside the home.In this show, we do more than a movie review by delving into the lives of the cast and crew, fan theories, trivia, scene breakdowns, and anything related to the film itself.  Needless to say, our shows are a little longer than your average movie review show, but we can assure you that our shows are jam-packed with entertaining and interesting discussions.  If that sounds like your sort of bag, hang out with Kenny and Del as they get into The Black Phone.Tom Savini Black Phone Mask creation:  https://ew.com/movies/black-phone-mask-tom-savini-scott-derrickson-interview/  Screenrant Black Phone Article:  https://screenrant.com/black-phone-ending-explained-meaning/Amazon Black Mask:  https://www.amazon.com/Costume-Grabber-Halloween-Cosplay-Masquerade/dp/B0B2CSQ41R/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2JQ8NTBD00UIE&keywords=black%2Bphone%2Bmask&qid=1660708924&s=instant-video&sprefix=black%2Bphone%2Bmask%2Cinstant-video%2C233&sr=1-1-catcorr&th=1Thanks for listening and feel free to hit us up on any of our social media platforms!https://linktr.ee/BiAPodcastTheme song "Loli'ana" written and performed by award-winning musician Kamuela Kahoano.   Listen to more of Kamuela's music on iTunes and https://kamuelamusic.com/.  Also, "Loli'ana" performed live at The Ko'olau Banquet Hall can be seen here https://youtu.be/YDJ1NNJgEiA  If you enjoyed our show, subscribe and check out our new shows that drop every Friday.  Also, new this year, our non-routine Anniversary Specials, which are 30 minute shows that pay tribute to a movie celebrating a significant anniversary.

No Time to Die (ENCORE)

No Time to Die (ENCORE)

2023-06-1602:24:07

Today’s show is a discussion and review of the long awaited last ride of Daniel Craig’s James Bond in No Time To Die.From 1953 to 1966, Ian Fleming wrote and published 12 James Bond novels and two short story collections.  Following Fleming’s death in 1964, an additional 42 Bond novels were written by several authors commissioned by Ian Fleming Publications up to as recently as 2018.  Proven popular stories for TV, radio, and comics, the first of Fleming’s novels to be adapted for film was Dr No in 1962 starring Sean Connery.  The remainder of Fleming’s Bond novels were made into films from 1962 to 1987, before the first post-Fleming novel was used to make License to Kill in 1987 starring Timothy Dalton as Bond.At the time, the only Fleming novel that had not been adapted to film by EON films, remained unused until 2006, discounting a loosely based 1967 spoof of the same name.  Daniel Craig has been surprisingly cast to take the reins of Britain’s super spy, as the new James Bond.  And for Craig's debut, Fleming's first novel was used for the new Bond era's first film Casino Royale. The era of a new James Bond had begun and critics and audience fell in love with Craig’s rough raw take on the former suave debonair persona that we had grown used to for the past 5 decades. Since its debut Casino Royale has grossed $594 million dollars worldwide and was in the top 10 grossing films of 2006.  Craig went on to star in 3 more Bond films; Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre.  In total, these 4 Daniel Craig Bond films had a worldwide gross of nearly $3.2 billion dollars and an average Rotten Tomatoes score of 78% by critics and 74% by audiences.  Needless to say, we thought the studio wouldn’t  stop making Bond films anytime soon.A few years after Spectre, it was announced that the next Bond movie would be Daniel Craig’s last.  Although the news was disappointing, it didn’t seem like a big deal at the time, but now that No Time To Die is finally here, looking forward to watching it was bitter sweet.Join Kenny and Del for a full discussion and breakdown.  The Brothers will dive into pre-production, film performance, writing, direction, acting, scenes, and more.  We hope our discussion will not only entertain you, but will also spark your interest in this film.     Thanks for listening and feel free to hit us up on any of our social media platforms!     https://linktr.ee/BiAPodcastTheme song "Loli'ana" written and performed by award-winning musician Kamuela Kahoano.   Listen to more of Kamuela's music on iTunes and https://kamuelamusic.com/.  Also, "Loli'ana" performed live at The Ko'olau Banquet Hall can be seen here https://youtu.be/YDJ1NNJgEiA  Thanks for listening!  Don't forget our next bi-weekly Pod and keep an eye out for our specials, series, request line, and news episodes!  And please subscribe and review!

Ever since Superman burst onto the scene 85 years ago in the first issue of Action Comics, Superman - The Legendary Man of Steel - has been Earth’s mightiest hero.  Originally created by Joe Schuster and Jerry Siegel in June of 1938, Superman has enjoyed many different iterations on the stage and screen, but none would be more important than the 1978 blockbuster Superman the Movie.  However, like all great films, the journey from print to the screen would be arduous and filled with classic Hollywood turmoil.Hang out with us as we dive deep into Richard Donner’s 1978 classic, starring Christopher Reeve as Superman, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, Marlon Brando as Jor-El, and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane on The Brothers in Armchairs Podcast.  And just maybe, you’ll believe a man can fly. Hang out with us as we discuss and review the 1978 classic, "Superman The Movie" on The Brothers in Armchairs Podcast.  Links:35th Anniversary Trailer: https://youtu.be/grO4OcJ6cgYRequesting the Puzo Script:  https://archives-manuscripts.dartmouth.edu/repositories/2/archival_objects/560456Dark Infinity Reddit Theory: https://www.reddit.com/r/DC_Cinematic/comments/xlmj8k/everything_known_about_mario_puzos_superman/ Kill Bill Superman Comment:  https://youtu.be/I_cEoK1mXms Christopher Reeve Criticizes Brando:  https://youtu.be/w9uyvZ4answ Stockard Channing as Lois Lane:  https://youtu.be/ZWGv799MR_k  ABC Superman Trailer:  https://youtu.be/Kay-eRh4PhgOur media link:  https://linktr.ee/BiAPodcastTheme song "Loli'ana" was written and performed by award-winning musician Kamuela Kahoano.   Listen to more of Kamuela's music on iTunes and https://kamuelamusic.com/.  Also, "Loli'ana" performed live at The Ko'olau Banquet Hall can be seen here https://youtu.be/YDJ1NNJgEiA  Thanks for listening!  And please subscribe and review!
One of video games most iconic characters Mario, went from humble beginnings to a billion dollar franchise.  Along the way, Mario and his twin brother Luigi, got the feature film treatment, including an anime version in 1986, which is a cult classic in Japan and a live action version in 1993, which is widely considered a bomb despite at least breaking even at the box office.  The 93’ version was so ill received by critics and audiences that even the mention of another live action Mario movie was taboo. In fact, for the film's 20th anniversary, Bob Hoskins, who played Mario, said it was the worst thing he’d ever done.  And Dennis Hopper, who played King Coopa, said that his then 6 year old son asked him why he played that terrible guy King Koopa to which Hopper answered “Well Henry, I did that so you could have shoes”.  His son replied, “Dad, I don’t need shoes that badly”.So why then, 30 years later, did Nintendo, Illumination, and Universal Pictures bankroll another Mario Bros. feature film?  Did they waste $100 million bucks on a franchise destined to bomb in the theater?  Or do we finally have a feature film worthy of our love for the Mario Brothers?Hang out with us as we discuss and review the 2023 animated adventure film “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” on The Brothers in Armchairs Podcast.    Our media link:  https://linktr.ee/BiAPodcastTheme song "Loli'ana" was written and performed by award-winning musician Kamuela Kahoano.

Back in 2014, Universal Pictures wanted to reboot its Universal Monster properties as part of a shared universe they would call “The Dark Universe”.  The venture began with 2014s Dracula Untold, which flopped, and then they tried again with 2017s The Mummy, which despite being profitable, earning $410 million dollars against a $125 million dollar budget, wasn’t well received by critics and prompted the studio to scrap the Dark Universe.Flash forward to 2019, Robert Kirkman pitched a 20 page script for a comedic horror Dracula story in the theme of 2014s What We Do In The Shadows.  2020s The Invisible Man was a commercial and critical hit that gave new hope for the Universal Monsters franchise.  Kirkman got the green light, signing up director Chris McKay and writer Ryan Ridley to develop a final vision that led to a quasi sequel to the first Universal Monster hit, Todd Browning’s 1931 Dracula starring Bela Lugosi. If you want to know if Universal’s latest Monster offering is going to sink or float the franchise, hangout with us as we discuss and review the latest homage to the Dracula franchise in Chris McKay’s RENFIELD on The Brothers in Armchairs Podcast. Thanks for listening, and feel free to hit us up on any of our social media platforms!    Behind the Scenes on Renfield: https://youtu.be/xwz61IuD7vw Our media link:  https://linktr.ee/BiAPodcastTheme song "Loli'ana" was written and performed by award-winning musician Kamuela Kahoano.
Batman Returns (Encore)

Batman Returns (Encore)

2023-05-1901:19:21

Today’s show features one of our favorite films of all time, the 1992 Tim Burton classic BATMAN RETURNS, which celebrates its 30th anniversary on June 16, 2022.When Batman’s 1989 theatrical run ended, it left theaters with a haul of $251M domestically, $411M worldwide, and was the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time.  Naturally, Warner Bros wanted to get to work on a sequel as quickly as possible.  However, Batman was the largest studio production Tim Burton had ever done at the time, and he was burned out.  Instead of running right into production on a second Batman movie, Burton opted to make a smaller and more personal film for 20th Century Fox called Edward Scissorhands.  Following the end of production for Scissorhands, Warner was already in production on the next Batman and wanted to ramp up the villainy by having two villains for the sequel.  Turning to screenwriter Sam Hamm who offered a story that focused on the villains Catwoman and The Penguin.  Warner Bros then offered Burton the option of either directing another Batman or a Beetlejuice sequel.  Ultimately, Burton decided on Batman because he was a fan of “animal people,” and the sequel provided an opportunity to do the kind of Batman story he loved as a kid. The rest is movie-making history.    In this show, we do more than a movie review by delving into the lives of the cast and crew, fan theories, trivia, scene breakdowns, and anything related to the film itself.  Needless to say, our shows are a little longer than your average movie review show, but we can assure you that our shows are jam packed with entertaining and interesting discussions.  If that sounds like your sort of bag, hang out with Kenny and Del as they get into Batman Returns. Today's show is a discussion and review of the Foo Fighters feature film debut in the comedy horror STUDIO 666.*Unlike our other podcasts, this one contains explicit material.Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl made no pretense about the film not being Oscar Worthy and we really got that it was just a fun project between friends.  It was an idea thought up by the band while recording some songs in the same house featured in the film.  That idea became a fun conversation that grew beyond the band.  Before they knew it, Roswell Films and Therapy Studios was on board, BJ McDonnell set to direct, a full script that one of the band members never read, a budget, table reads, and the sudden realization that the Foo Fighters were making a feature film.If you’ve ever seen Foo Fighters music videos, you’d already know that they usually have some sort of themed story.  Their videos are actually enjoyable and sometimes comical, especially as old men in Run, as passengers and flight crew in Learn To Fly, and the more serious almost political statement in The Pretender.  It's not a far stretch for this band to make the leap into a comedy horror feature film and actually probably long overdue. If that sounds like your sort of bag, hang out with Kenny and Del as they get into Studio 666.  Thanks for listening and feel free to hit us up on any of our social media platforms!https://linktr.ee/BiAPodcastTheme song "Loli'ana" written and performed by award-winning musician Kamuela Kahoano.   Listen to more of Kamuela's music on iTunes and https://kamuelamusic.com/.  Also, "Loli'ana" performed live at The Ko'olau Banquet Hall can be seen here https://youtu.be/YDJ1NNJgEiA

Today we are celebrating 1997s John Cusack contemporary classic Grosse Pointe Blank, which celebrates its 26th anniversary on April 11th.   You might notice that this is not a 30 minute show.  That’s because this film has so much to talk about that we felt it more worthy of a full episode.   Today’s anniversary film was voted on by YOU the listener.  The idea for this film was born out of genuine fear, as screenwriter Tom Jankiewicz wrote the script for the movie in 1991 shortly after receiving an invitation to his own ten-year high school reunion.  Tom was working as a cashier at Big Lots and a substitute teacher in Upland, CA, a suburb in LA, where he was trying to make it as a screenwriter, and the idea of seeing all those friends from High School “freaked him out."  Call it true motivation, as it prompted him to develop and produce the script for Grosse Pointe Blank.   The character of Martin Blank was born out of Jankiewcz’s love of crime fiction. However, there was an excellent urban legend online about it being about a real student who became a hitman after graduating from Grosse Point High.In this show, we do more than a movie review by delving into the lives of the cast and crew, fan theories, trivia, scene breakdowns, and anything related to the film itself.  Needless to say, our shows are a little longer than your average movie review show, but we can assure you that our shows are jam packed with entertaining and interesting discussions.  If that sounds like your sort of bag, hang out with Kenny and Del as they get into Grosse Pointe Blank. Also, "Loli'ana" performed live at The Ko'olau Banquet Hall can be seen here https://youtu.be/YDJ1NNJgEiA  If you enjoyed our show, subscribe and check out our new shows that drop every Friday.  Also, new this year, our non-routine Hot Topic show where we discuss what's hot in the movie world and our Anniversary Specials, which are 30 minute show that pay tribute to a movie celebrating a significant anniversary.

The Brothers celebrate Kenny’s Birthday!  As a BiAP tradition, full creative control is given to the host on their birthday.  That means the show is completely of their own design, and it’s a doozy.  For today’s show, Kenny takes us all on a trip down memory lane with two movies from his younger years.  You may not know this, but Kenny has a massive collection of movies.  A portion of his collection is of movies that were put out to pasture by critics and audiences alike.  We jokingly refer to this portion of his collection as “Kenny’s Crap Corner”.  The beauty of Kenny’s Crap Corner is that each of these films has a sentimental meaning for Kenny, and every time he watches them, he is transported to the events of his life that happened the first time he saw each film.  Join us as Kenny introduces two films that neither Del nor our featured guests Leigh and Chris had ever seen, and perhaps you as well.  Kenny will tell us the story of why these movies have a place in his heart, and of course, we’ll break them down like we always do.  Laced with nostalgia,  and creative sound effects, this is truly going to be movie review entertainment. Our movies are each celebrating 40 years, which is why this is a Craptassversary Episode.  Instead of our usual deep-dive review, today's show will follow our anniversary-style show, only hitting the highlights of each movie.  Today's movies are Spacehunter Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983) and Jaws 3D (1983).Thanks for listening and feel free to hit us up on any of our social media platforms!https://linktr.ee/BiAPodcastKenny's Letterboxd account:  https://letterboxd.com/knnthp3/Theme song "Loli'ana" written and performed by award-winning musician Kamuela Kahoano.
