This episode is all about Disney and Pixar’s all-new original feature film “Turning Red”! I've been so excited about this movie and can't wait to hear what you all think. There are a few very special guests featured in this episode.... You'll hear interview clips from the London movie premiere with lead voice actress Rosalie Chiang who voices Chinese-Canadian teenager Meilin. I'm soo excited to share clips of the one and only Sandra Oh (“The Chair,” “Killing Eve”), who voices Mei's protective if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming . I also had a chance to interview producer Lindsey Collins and director Domee Shi as part of their UK press junket. To round out Ep 20 I am excited to speak to Steph Fung, founder of Asians In Britain, about being part of the Red Carpet Press at the “Turning Red” London premiere 😍 -------------------------------------------- Thank you to Media Hive Turning Red - Meilin "Mei" Lee is a 13-year-old girl who is torn between being her mother's obedient daughter and the chaos of her youth. As if that were not enough, when she gets too excited, she turns into a big red panda. Out on Disney+ from 11th March 2022. You're in for a treat as I'm sitting down with all 3 of my younger sisters for a #SISTERTAG episode, Did you know that the first Sunday of August is SISTERS DAY? I'm so grateful that I have my younger sisters Jessica, Lauryn and Olivia. We're talking about the meaning behind our names,  after-school tutoring and growing up with Asian parents. We also accidentally get into family trauma and the fights we had growing up. From this episode, I've realised how many childhood memories I've completely forgotten and also how me and my sisters finish each other sentences! We are exploring guest MinJu's journey to become more fluent in both Fluent Korean culture and language. As someone who grew up largely in Manila Philippines,  MinJu is keen to learn more about her South Korean roots and shares her research on her FluentKorean website. I learnt so much from our conversation from MinJu's experiences in International School, how learning about Korean culture helps her understand her parents and the terms that Koreans adopt from other languages. A highlight of the conversation is MinJu's research about Gisaeng (or Kisaeng), women who were enslaved sex workers and also very well educated. Who knew?!  This really inspires me to learn more about East and Southeast Asian history, something I learnt nothing about at school! How have you explored the culture and history of your Asian heritage? I am joined by actress Kanako Nakano who I discovered through White Pearl, a play about a fictional skin-whitening cosmetics company. In this episode we’re talking about colourism, the prejudice based on skintone usually with a preference for lighter skin. We share our Asian experiences of colourism and how I was encouraged to keep out of the sun so I don’t tan. What are your experiences with Asian beauty standards and colourism? We also explore Kanako’s international theatre work, skin care routines, wasteful packaging, cultural belonging and finding our voice. Are Asians less likely to speak up and represent ourselves? Now she has been living in the UK longer than in Japan, what are the cultural differences? This episode we're talking about bringing musical theatre and the arts to life in the tiny Southeast Asian nation of Brunei.  Basil Witsqa is Bruneian teacher and performer with both Malay and Filipino heritage. Our conversation includes the real blend of cultures represented in Basil's life including religions, languages and Western influences. Basil shares the challenges and successes while creating a space for musical theatre productions. I can definitely relate to an upbringing where creative interests were seen as only hobbies and not career options!  We also explore how to make American stories accessible to a local Bruneian audience and how the young nation is finding its identity.
