As a child, did you ever feel like nobody paid attention to you? Like you were always on the outside looking in? Like your parents were never home and your siblings were too busy with their own lives? If so, then you may have been neglected as a child. Children who are neglected often have trouble forming healthy relationships later in life because they don't know what it means to be loved unconditionally. They grow up feeling like nobody wants them around, and this can make them struggle with acceptance from others and themselves throughout adulthood. Without a sense of love and belonging from someone important in their lives (like a parent), it can be difficult for them to develop meaningful connections with others later on too.So how does one heal from childhood neglect? In this week's episode, I sit down with Teely Hopkin to discuss how one can overcome childhood emotional neglect. When Teely was two years old, she lost her mother to a car accident who was on her way to respond to an emergency call for the fire department. This left her dad to raise two very young children by himself. As a result of this, the atmosphere of the home she grew up in quickly started to change when her father remarried, and Teely found this new environment to be deeply emotionally neglectful.  After going through intensive therapy in her adulthood and later joining Starts With Youth, an organization that aims to create a community that no longer shies away from conversations about trauma and abuse, Teely wants to share her story to help others who have also experienced emotional neglect in their childhood. In more detail we discuss:What it means to be neglected as a childThe effects of neglect in adulthoodHow childhood neglect can impact your friendships and romantic relationshipsHow one recovers and heals from neglectAnd more!Connect with Teely and Starts With Youth on Instagram and check out their website https://www.startswithyouth.com/! Connect with me:Email: hailey.rodgers@hotmail.comPersonal Instagram: @haileyrodddgersPodcast Instagram: @seemeshowpodI'm always looking for guests so please reach out to me through any of these channels and I'd be happy to discuss a potential episode :)
How to Live With PTSD

How to Live With PTSD

2022-07-1201:01:20

Trigger Warning: in this episode, we discuss Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in-depth, and may be triggering for some listeners. PTSD is a mental health condition that can happen after someone goes through a traumatic event or ordeal. It can cause changes in your brain and body that make it hard for you to function normally. These changes can last for months or even years after the event happened, making it not only difficult to go back to normal life, but getting to where you want to be, However, there are ways that people have learned how to live with their symptoms over time so they can still function healthily. And some even feel empowered by their diagnosis, allowing them to go on a healing journey and still go after what they want in life. So, how can one live with PTSD?  In this week's episode, I sit down with the Co-Founder & CEO of Mira Therapeutics, CJ Internicola. Mira is dedicated to building technology that helps people recover from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and empowers therapists to deliver more robust care. The Mira App is now used by thousands of trauma survivors around the world and is available on Android and iOS.In our conversation, CJ shares his findings and insights about PTSD throughout his time building and establishing Mira, and I also share my own journey with PTSD. In more detail, we discuss: What PTSD isThe causes of PTSDHow it impacts one's lifeThe concept of Post-Traumatic GrowthWhere you can access supportAnd more!Connect with CJ on Instagram and also follow Mira Therapeutics on Instagram. Download the Mira app on the App Store or Google Play. Starting new things is scary. We've all been there. We know how it feels to be scared to try something new because we're afraid of failing, or we're afraid that people will think we're weird for trying something new. It's easy to stay in our comfort zones and not push ourselves out of them, but when we do push ourselves out of our comfort zones, amazing things happen.Trying new things enables so much growth and can set us down the right path for where our lives are meant to go. We just need to keep reminding ourselves that starting something new is never easy—but it's also never permanent. However, this mentality can be (very) challenging to adopt. Fortunately, this week on the See Me Show podcast, we get to hear from Author, Educator, and Entrepreneur, Sujaya Devi, on how we can achieve our goals and begin something new despite our fears.Sujaya is Canadian-Indo-Trinidadian and she published her first book “Write Left” in 2017 and launched her second book, “Devi(l): poetry and prose” in 2021. Her work is inspired by culture, identity, and wellness. Sujaya is the host and producer of Our First Page, a podcast about beginnings. Sujaya works in higher education in administration and media. Sujaya is a media professor and aims to empower students at the beginning of their journeys. Connect with Sujaya and check out her books by visiting: https://linktr.ee/sujayadeviConnect with me:Email: hailey.rodgers@hotmail.comPersonal Instagram: @haileyrodddgersPodcast Instagram: @seemeshowpodI'm always looking for guests so please reach out to me through any of these channels and I'd be happy to discuss a potential episode :)

I'm Ready to Choose Me

2022-06-1244:35

You have to choose yourself. You are the only one who can make the right choices for your life. You are the only one who can choose what kind of relationships you want to have with other people and what kind of life you want to live. If you don't choose yourself, then who will?It is so important to choose yourself in order to live an authentic life—but it can be so challenging in this world that pressures conformity and makes you feel like you're never quite enough. So how do you choose yourself? How do you take steps toward being your best self when everything around you is telling you that who you are or what you have to offer isn't good enough? In this week's episode, I sit down with Feminine Embodiment Coach, Romina Lee, to learn how we can choose ourselves in the good, bad, and ugly moments. It's not easy to do—it takes courage and strength. But it comes down to us realizing that we have all this love and light waiting to be unleashed on the world—and it's up to us how much of it gets released.About RominaRomina is a mother of three amazing adult children and a Nonna to two adorable grandchildren. She lives in Kununurra which is in the far north of Western Australia and is a feminine embodiment coach, amongst many other talents! She has written her own Mermaid archetypes and created a program to guide and support women, plus she offers 1:1 coaching for women. She loves supporting women to become the empowered creator of their own universe, as they rise up as the spectacular Mermaid that they were born to be.  Seeing women step into their own authenticity and power lights her up and makes her heart sing with joy.  A woman remembering all that she is and who she truly is, as she connects to her heart and choosing herself is a gift to herself first and foremost, and then of course the world. Connect with Romina by:Visiting her website www.rominalee.comFollowing her on Instagram @iamrominaleeAnd liking her Facebook page Awaken Your Mermaid WithinResourcesWhy Choosing Yourself Over Any Relationship Is Not SelfishConnect with me:Email: hailey.rodgers@hotmail.comPersonal Instagram: @haileyrodddgersPodcast Instagram: @seemeshowpodI'm always looking for guests so please reach out to me through any of these channels and I'd be happy to discuss a potential episode :)
How to Honour Yourself

How to Honour Yourself

2022-05-0923:32

Honour yourself, and you will experience more joy, happiness, and peace in your life.Hey friend! Welcome back to the See Me Show podcast! It's been a while... but that's because I've been navigating a TON of life changes (some positive, some negative). But the combination of all these life changes lead me to this week's podcast episode topic: how to honour yourself!Honouring yourself means taking responsibility for your thoughts and actions. It means accepting that you are a human being who makes mistakes, but not letting those mistakes define you. It means taking time to think about what you want out of life and then striving for it. It means recognizing how much power you have over your own life; it's about making sure that no one else gets to decide what happens next for you unless you agree with them first. It means taking responsibility for your own actions and reactions so that you can learn from them and grow into an even better version of yourself than before!Honouring yourself is hard to do in this world that constantly pushes a narrative of who you should and shouldn't be. But I'm excited to share with you my story and tips on how you can navigate this challenge and prioritize yourself so you can live the life you truly want.Connect with me:Email: hailey.rodgers@hotmail.comPersonal Instagram: @haileyrodddgersPodcast Instagram: @seemeshowpodI'm always looking for guests so please reach out to me through any of these channels and I'd be happy to discuss a potential episode :)
Addicted to Work

Addicted to Work

2022-03-3158:44

If you're working on weekends, answering emails at 3am, and taking work calls while in bed, this episode is for you. It’s great to be ambitious, motivated, and hard-working. The problem is that our society takes it too far. We let our value and sense of self-worth be determined by how much money we make and how much time we spend at the office. The more hours we spend working, the better we feel about ourselves… but it's actually not good for us. We end up working ourselves into the ground until we can't work anymore. Work addiction keeps us from experiencing passion and joy in what we have to offer for this world. Being busy, hustling, and making sure that we're always working as hard as possible is detrimental to our mental health and overall, how we experience this journey called life.In this week’s episode, I sit down with my FIRST-EVER returning guest, Jess Takimoto, to discuss this topic. Jess is a fitness entrepreneur and strong body confidence advocate. She started her company, SHINE, 2 years ago to change the narrative around fitness, body image, and health. To date, SHINE has changed over 1,000 lives. Jess is also a Queen's Commerce graduate, Chancellor's Scholarship recipient, and CanFitPro certified fitness professional. To find out more or connect with Jess, connect with her on Instagram at @jesstakimotofitness.Both Jess and I have experienced severe issues with work addiction. In fact, I still am! But both of us are working on how NOT to work so hard and want to share our where we are at in our journeys. In today's frenetic world, digital detoxes are a way for us to take a step back from our devices and evaluate our relationship with technology. It can be easy to get lost in the hype of the latest social media app or the most addictive game, but it's important to remember that we're in control of how we use our devices—not the other way around. Digital detoxes are a great way to help you reclaim your time and feel more present in your day-to-day life. But digital detoxes can be challenging as we've become accustomed to being constantly connected with those around us. Screens are highly addictive and it can be incredibly hard to separate ourselves from. In this week's episode, I sit down with Jane Bowden who is going to teach us how we can do an effective digital detox despite these challenges. Born and raised in the Jersey Shore, Jane is a digital marketer, freelance writer, aspiring author and founder of her mental health blog, Your Friend Jane, which reaches thousands of readers across the globe. She started blogging about her ongoing journey with depression, anxiety and an eating disorder in 2016, as a way to cope, build community connection and inspire hope in others. What does success mean to you?Does it mean graduating from a prestigious university? Does it mean making a six figure salary? Does it mean settling down with a partner and kids? Does it mean doing all of these things in this order? Is this what success truly means to you, or is it what society has told you that you need to do in order to succeed? In this week's episode, I was fortunate to sit down with Zoe Côté to discuss the concept of success and how we can define it for ourselves. At the end of the day, if we aren't pursuing what truly matters to us, we won't experience true happiness and peace... and Zoe is going to teach us how we can do just that. After graduating with a degree in psychology and spending a year working as a journalist, Zoe decided to pursue her passion for mental and physical wellbeing by creating a community centred around self-improvement, mental health, food, and fitness.Through platforms like TikTok, Youtube, and Instagram, she hopes to show people that leading a healthy lifestyle can be as simple and individual as you want it to be, and that finding balance is one of the most important first steps. When she’s not cooking up new recipes or lifting weights, Zoe loves self deprecating jokes, laying on the beach, and blasting music in the car.In more detail, we chat about:The external pressures society places on us about success How we can redefine successHow defining success ourselves can allow us to live a happier and fulfilling lifeHow we can shift our mindsetAnd more!Connect with Zoe on Instagram @imzoecote and TikTok @imzoecote. Have you ever felt like you were different from other members of your family or social groups? Perhaps these differences related to your political views or desired career path or values in general. These differences can cause one to feel like they are the "black sheep".When we don't feel like we fit in or feel negatively judged by other members of our social groups, it can cause us to hide our authentic selves. It's so important that we live authentic lives so that we can experience happiness and fulfillment. That's why it's so important to own our black sheep identities despite what others have to say... and Maddy Maksy will tell us how we can do just that.Maddy is a an Anthropologist-turned-Life-Coach who helps wandering souls find what makes them truly, unapologetically themselves. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 2019, she started her journey of self-discovery and became a Life Alignment Coach. Now she works with others to help them build lives that feel completely authentic. Maddy, too, has felt like she is the black sheep of her family, being the only non-republican, LGBTQIA+, and "spiritual" member. She used to resent expressing herself truthfully in front of her family, but once she started really focusing on her self-exploration and personal truths, she became so much more empowered to stand up for herself and her differences. True or false? Introverts can be effective leaders....TRUE! Introverts can be effective and EPIC leaders. But a common myth that circulates throughout our society is that introverts can't be. Writing is an incredible tool to explore and discover your authentic self. Whether it be engaging in reflective daily journaling or crafting a work of fiction or jotting down whatever story you want to share, there are so many parts of who you are that can be revealed in your writing. Writing enables you to get your stream of consciousness down on paper and unleash your creativity, which allows you to tangibly see parts of who you are that may have otherwise been hidden. So how do you use writing as medium to discover your authentic self? In this week’s episode, I sit down with 3x published author, Brittney Dear, to discuss this topic. Brittney is the author of Forsaken and Fifty Days, both of which she published as a teenager, as well as the story collection Hummingbird Tales. When she’s not writing, she’s nose-deep in a book, sipping from a large mug of coffee or tea, outside in nature, or gushing over psychological theories. In more detail we discuss:The benefits of engaging in writingThe types of writing you can exploreHow writing allows you to discover your authentic selfSteps for starting your writing journey And more!Connect with Brittney on Instagram and check out her website https://www.brittneykristina.com!MAKE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH YOUR #1 PRIORITY THIS NEW YEAR BY SIGNING UP FOR THE JOURNAL THAT TALKS BACK!The Journal That Talks Back is an accessible coaching service for young professionals that connects you with a certified coach who is trained to respond to your challenges through a safe, secure and accessible journaling app that is designed to help you explore, reflect, and grow. In the 1920s, Ford Motor Company introduced the 9 to 5 work day as way to protect employees from being over worked. This was a great way to ensure the health and wellbeing of those working in the manufacturing and industrial sectors. However, as time has gone on and technology has evolved and allowed for automation, the need for manual labour has significantly decreased. Today, companies rely on creativity and innovation as key skills in employees. Given that the nature of work has drastically changed in the last century, should employers rely on a 9-5 work model? In this week's episode, I sit down with Author and Author Coach, Mackenzie Finklea to discuss this topic. Mackenzie is a Texan, born-and-raised. She currently lives and works out of her home office in Galveston; helping other authors achieve their dreams of being published. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology: with a special interest in human cultures and archaeology. When she’s not researching and observing displays of human culture, she enjoying traveling, especially off the beaten path, and visiting as many museums as possible along the way. After attending a summer program at New York University, Mackenzie realized there is a major issue with companies that are still gravitating towards traditional in-person work methods despite the evidence of how flexibility (i.e. working remotely/hybrid) actually increases productivity. As a result of this, Mackenzie feels as though companies are excluding the potential for so many great workers across the country. In more detail, we discuss:The current issues in today's workforceHow these issues are impacting workersThe changes that need to be implemented to improve employees' job experiencesHow to find a career that aligns with your authentic self& more!Connect with Mackenzie on Instagram and Twitter. There are so many parts of ourselves that make us who we are whether it be our race, gender, age, sexuality, personality, political affiliations, religious beliefs, professional lives, and so on. However, these parts of ourselves can be difficult to balance or even clash at times. Perhaps you’ve just moved to a brand new country and you’re trying to navigate the culture while still trying to preserve your roots. What does it mean to honour the voices around us? How can we use the power of storytelling as a catalyst for positive change in a world that glamourizes conformity? In this week's episode, I explore the importance of honouring and amplifying everyone's voices with author, Kyra Ann Dawkins. Inspired by the stories her grandfather told her, Kyra is no stranger to writing. Having published in many papers, she graduated with highest honors from Phillips Exeter Academy and from Columbia University in the City of New York where she majored in Medicine, Literature, and Society. After graduating, she noticed an intense pressure to construct her identity. A champion of oral tradition, she wrote her debut book, The We and the They, to create a narrative space where readers could escape the limits of individuality and experience a story as a member of a new collective. In our conversation, Kyra shares her story and more specifically, talks about her Autistic and Nonverbal sister, Kendra, and how she has shown Kyra what it means to be true to who you are and to honour all voices. In more detail we discuss: Why storytelling is importantThe lessons Kyra's sister has taught herWhat it means to honour the voices around usHow we can honour and amplify the voices around usAnd more!Connect with Kyra on Instagram @kyra_ann_writes and check out her website https://www.kyraanndawkins.org! NEW MENTAL HEALTH SERVICE ALERT!Check out The Journal That Talks Back! Being a part of authentic communities is an essential part of living life with meaning and purpose. They allow you to surround yourself with diverse people who are grounded in the same values and desire to make positive change in the world. But finding your people can be so challenging at times, especially in this world that encourages conformity over authenticity. In this week's episode, I discuss this idea of authentic communities with the Founder of Happy Human Project, Aidan Bonner. Aidan sprung onto campus at Dalhousie University last year with one goal in mind: proving that happiness comes from a community that unites for the greater good, as Founder and President of Happy Human Project, at a time when the sense of community perished most during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Aidan has become a voice for voiceless communities nationwide and has sparked efforts for various causes including helping homeless, assisting Indigenous organizations, raising funds for food banks, and has used his voice as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in spreading the importance of inclusivity and equality. In addition, he continues to advocate the importance of mental health through his social media and as a founding member of Step Above Stigma. Ultimately, life is so much more fulfilling when we surround ourselves with people who are aligned with our authentic selves. Regardless of the challenges that come with finding people who align with your authentic self, there are many ways to go about it... and Aidan shares his insights on how you can do just that! In more detail we discuss:What authentic communities areThe kinds of communities you can get involved inHow to go about finding authentic people and communitiesHow to start your own authentic communitiesAnd more!Connect with Aidan on Instagram @aidanbonner and check out Happy Human Project's website https://www.happyhumanproject.ca and Instagram @happyhumanproj. NEW MENTAL HEALTH SERVICE ALERT!Check out The Journal That Talks Back!
