The voice of a community that has fallen on deaf ears for far too long is finally having a chance to be heard. Today, we discuss the insane trend of influencers and businesses using such a pivotal moment in history as a platform for their own gains, not to help a community they claim to love and support, but to boost their own brand awareness. We raise similarities akin to big brands during pride month, and how being an "ally" seems to be on-trend these days. Lisa has been extremely gracious and incredibly brave and shares with us her own personal experience of living as a woman of colour, and the trends she is noticing on social platforms as a strategist around the Black Lives Matters movement with the sudden uptick in posted support, especially by white influencers, which may not have much truth or value to it. A person's struggle is not for you to build your name on - an entire community needs a helping hand up, not a shout out. Share, support, donate, and educate yourself, but make sure to do it with a true heart. If you know you have internal work to do - do it. Read books, educate yourself on history outside of your own, donate to a cause that is making a difference - your journey is your own, and the path to growth we can only walk ourselves, and we commend those with the strength to start that journey... but please, please don't post a black square just to say you did if you aren't going to do anything different in your offline life. The world doesn't need more lip service. Take action, do what you can. Black lives are at risk, and they MATTER, and they will continue to be at risk until we do something different as a global community, but it starts with one person - ourselves.
