Digital Arts Tutorial

Digital Arts Tutorial

2021-01-2602:02

Hi, this is Chris Legaspi. I'm a professional artist, author and instructor. And today we're going to talk about digital art tutorials for digital painting. Now, what is a digital art tutorial? Well, digital art means, uh, making art, using some kind of electronic interface. And you know, one of the most popular interfaces right now is something like Photoshop and so as other ways to make digital art using electronic medium. Now, when you're looking for digital art tutorials, looking for information, or you want to learn or improve your digital art, what I would recommend is, and what I look for when I look for knowledge, information is to focus on the art part of digital art, focus on the art. And what I mean by that is art is built up of, of, um, types of building blocks of fundamentals, for example, drawing design, uh, value, or some of the, some of the fundamental building blocks that you could learn to make better art.You know, digital is just a medium. So instead of focusing on the digital side, look forward to tutorials or information or knowledge that helps you improve on the art side. So. Um, you know, like, like I mentioned earlier, art drawing design, and later, as you get more experienced, you can do more complex ideas.Like, um, maybe shading or sketching more complex composition. You can go to different subjects like landscape and then eventually you can do things like color as well when you're ready to do color and painting. So that's something that I would look for when I want to improve my, um, digital art or from looking for digital art tutorials is to focus on the arts on improving myself as an artist first and then being able to apply it to a medium book will come easy. Okay. That's it for this episode. And until next time, get out there, keep drawing, keep painting, and build up that mileage. Bye for now.
Hi, this is Chris Legaspi. I'm a professional artist, author and instructor. And today we're going to talk about digital painting tutorial. Now what is a digital painting tutorial? As I mentioned in previous episodes, unlike oil painting classes,  digital is using an electronic interface. Uh, the most popular one right now is Photoshop painting.Painting is the act of drawing plus adding the layer of element of color. So digital painting is using an electronic interface, like Photoshop classes to create artwork, to create digital paintings. And the definition of tutorial is simply specific instruction. It's some form of instruction. And typically, when, when you see the word tutorial online, it's, it refers to some kind of free instruction or free listen to free video perhaps, or articles, or course a more complex version. Now, um, a digital painting tutorial is, is going to be very, very helpful. If you want to learn digital painting, if you want to improve. So, it was very helpful. So, I think it's definitely something, um, uh, good to do to study, to review, to learn now, one thing to keep in mind and one thing to look for, and specifically for me, what I look for in a good tutorial is I look for two things.Number one is results and number two is communication. So, for me, when I want to learn something, when I look forward to tutorial, I first look for results. Meaning does the person who is offering the advice, the information, the knowledge have they achieved, the results that I want. Did they have, did they have the work? Does their work look good in a way that I liked that I want? And also, can they communicate? Um, so that's a whole other uh, skillset that, um, you know, it's often difficult to find, but, um, um, also in communication, um, the communication also not only has to be clear, but also has to resonate with you because there's many different teaching styles, communication styles for painting classes online. So, those are just two things that I look for. And I think there are two things to keep in mind because there's so much information out there. And many of it is good, but a lot of it is maybe not as beneficial. So, when you're out there going through the sea of information, um, first when you're looking for a digital painting tutorial first, um, focus on the results, who is getting the results that you want and who has a communication style that resonates with you. And, um, if you keep those two things in mind, I think, uh, and with experience, uh, those that, that skillset will improve the ability to sift through information. And you'll be able to find a lot of good knowledge and information and good digital painting tutorial that suits your needs. So that's all for this episode. And until next time, get out there, keep drawing, keep painting. You build up that mileage. Bye for now.For more information please visit https://www.lawsofcolor.com/
Hi, this is Chris Legaspi. And in this video, we're going to talk about how to paint in Photoshop. Now I've been a professional artist for over 20 years, and I started my career in the video game industry. And a lot of what I had to do was to create a digital illustrations or digital paintings and using a Photoshop was my primary tool. And, um, When people say painting in Photoshop, when you hear that term, it typically means that you want to create or mimic the look of traditional medium, like oil paint, acrylics, airbrush, or watercolor. So, when you hear painting, uh, and Photoshop, that's typically what that is referring to now. How, how do you paint in Photoshop?Well, what you do. Start with, uh, you need some kind of electronic interface and, uh, right now they whack them tablet. It's a, it's a digital pen electronic pen that allows you to interface with Photoshop directly. So, helps you to mimic the drawing motion. Now you could use. You could use a mouse obviously, but, uh, um, um, an electronic pen, like a welcome tablet, just feels much more natural. It makes the process more efficient. And, uh, once you're in Photoshop, the menu that you're going to be using to create, uh, the painted look is, uh, the custom brush menu and the brush menus is one of the most important menus in my, uh, from my experience. Uh, and Photoshop. And what it allows you to do is to create these digital brushes and allows you to create various textures and effects that mimic and simulate the look of traditional mediums, like oils and acrylics in, in Photoshop. And you may be wondering what, why, why would you want to paint in Photoshop? Well, one of the main advantages is editing because, um, In, in Photoshop, you, you know, you have tools like layers and image adjustments that allows you to edit, uh, you know, the drawing loves you and the value it allows you to edit the color very, very quickly allows you to erase, undo and things like that.So editing is one of the main advantages and also, it's a big benefit for, uh, commercial artists and illustrators, particularly, um, those who want to display their work electronically or in print. Uh, it's very, very helpful, you know, for commercial illustrators, you know, I, myself, um, now I'm working in, um, in the movie poster industry and, uh, I use it quite a bit and also, uh, all of my, uh, colleagues use Photoshop to create, uh, finished pieces, finished movie posters as well.So that's it for this episode. And until next time, get out there, keep drawing, keep painting, and build up that mileage. Bye for now.
Photoshop Drawing

Photoshop Drawing

2020-06-2402:27

Hi this is Chris Legaspi and in this episode we're going to talk about Photoshop drawing. Now in the last episode I briefly defined drawing. I simply defined drawing as making marks at it’s core essence. And as we get more sophisticated we can arrange those marks we make, the series of lines shapes and tones, and soft marks and hard marks. We can arrange them to make pictures as we get more sophisticated. Drawings essentially is mark making. Now, Photoshop drawing just means that you are doing the act of drawing using the software Photoshop and most likely using an electronic interface like Wacom tablets that simulates a pen or pencil. And why would you want to use Photoshop? You know because I'm sure everyone listening here, you know, everyone, we all drew as children. When we were younger we all picked up pencil and paper and crayons and we did drawings the traditional way. But why would you want to use Photoshop? Well for me, the main advantage of Photoshop really is editing. Editing is the main advantage of why you would want to draw in directly in Photoshop versus pencil and paper, the traditional way. As a professional artist you want to have the ability to quickly edit your work especially if you have tight deadlines if you are doing client work. You want to make changes. You want to do quick edits. And painting in Photoshop allows you to do that almost to an infinite range. And another interesting advantage or another interesting or powerful tool that's available in digital software like Photoshop and other painting apps, digital drawing apps, is the ability to quickly transform black and white into color. So we can begin with black and white drawings, either using lines or tones and then just with a, literally with a flip of a switch with the various tools we have available, like image adjustment tools, we can quickly transform black and white drawings into colors. That’s a fun and powerful tool and we’ll explore that more as we talk about painting in Photoshop. Okay well that's the end of this episode. Until next time, get out there, keep drawing, keep painting, and build up that mileage. Bye for now.Support the show (https://www.lawsofcolor.com)
Digital Drawing

Digital Drawing

2020-06-2303:10

Hi this is Chris Legaspi and today we're going to talk about digital drawing. Now I've been a digital artist for over 20 years now working professionally in video games. That’s where I started my career and more recently in the movie poster industry and most of the work I create for my clients and for the entertainment industry requires me to use digital software, digital tools, so I have quite a bit of experience in the process of digital drawing. Now, I want to briefly define what digital drawing is. In the previous episode we talked about digital painting and I defined painting simply as drawing plus colors. Now I want to quickly go into more detail about what drawing is. Now as I mentioned previously digital typically means that you’re just going through an electronic interface and for most professional artists that means you're using a software application like Photoshop or more recently Procreate and then you going to interface with the computer using a digital tablet. The most prominent one is the Wacom tablet. Now what is drawing? Drawing to me is the foundation of all artwork. All artwork really begins with some form of drawing including sculptural art, three-dimensional art. And to me essentially drawing is the act of making marks. You know when all human beings, children you know we all can understand the idea of making marks. We take, we pick up pencils and crayons and things. When we first begin to make these marks, we kind of make marks and they take three different forms. And these forms are either some kind of line or shape that we draw, or they take the form of a tone or a value that can be a light mark or a thin or a dark thicker mark. Or marks can also have a quality of edge. How hard a mark is compared to how soft a mark is. And that’s what we called edge. So these are the three elements or three forms that drawings can take and you know eventually as we become more sophisticated and we want to start to get into painting then we add the element of color, such as skin color palettes. But all of the art that we create begins at some form of drawing, some form of mark making. So that's the end of this episode. I just want to briefly describe or define what digital drawing is and specifically what makes up a drawing. In the next episode, we're going to talk more ideas on how to make digital art and the various tools that we can use. So with that in mind, get out there, keep drawing, keep painting, and build up that mileage. Bye for now.Support the show (https://www.lawsofcolor.com/)
Digital Painting

Digital Painting

2020-06-1604:20

Hi, this is Chris Legaspi and today we're going to talk about digital painting. Now, I’ve been a digital artist for many, many years. I’ve been working professionally in the entertainment industry, mostly as a video game concept artist and more recently in the movie poster industry where I do movie poster illustrations and concept art. Some of my more recent titles include Deadpool 2, Son of Shaft, Birds of Prey, and various other feature films, as well as Netflix features. Now, and for most of my career, digital painting has been a big part of the art I make for the entertainment industry. Now let’s first begin by defining what digital painting is. It's kind of a nebulous term and maybe it's the first time you're hearing it or you may hear it a lot and you’re not quite sure what it means. So, I'm going to define it today. So digital painting has two words.First is the “digital” and the second is the “painting”. So let’s first explore what “digital” means. Typically, when you hear the term digital painting, and someone says “digital”, what they’re referring to is some kind of computer interface and electronic interface. And for the last 20 or so years, the dominant digital interface has been a software program known as Photoshop. So you may have used it, you may be familiar with it. It’s what the professional industry-standard right now is. It’s a software where you can make artwork with the computer. So when people typically say digital painting, they’re referring to Photoshop. Now in more recent times, other painting apps have grown in popularity and this is because of the rise of the iPad and the iPencil so many wonderful apps have emerged and the most popular are SketchBook Pro and Procreate. So now a digital painting, the “digital” part can also include apps that use the iPad and the Apple Pencil. And when you're using painting in Photoshop, many professionals or students and other artists who start to do digital painting, they interface with Photoshop using what’s called a digital tablet. This is basically sort of electronic pen with an electronic tablet that you can interface with it to work like an electronic pencil. You can get much better results than using a mouse. And the most popular by far, and the industry standard for professionals is from a company named Wacom – W-A-C-O-M. And they make many, many wonderful tablets of various sizes and price range so generally when you hear the word “digital”, you think of Photoshop and you think of Wacom tablets. Now the second part of digital painting is “painting”. And “painting” again can have many, many definitions. It’s a huge, kind of a nebulous term but I'm for the simply define “painting” as drawing plus color. Painting to me is really the act of drawing with the addition of color. Now, again drawing is another term that we will define and explore in further episodes but for now I just wanted to find painting as creating images using drawing techniques and adding the element of color. And drawing basically, in short-terms is mark-making, using your pencil or digital tablet to make marks, to make lines, to make shapes, to make tones. So those are the two things that make up painting to me.Okay that's the end of the short clip. In later episodes, we’re going to explore further, go into detail, into more drawing ideas or digital painting ideas, more color ideas as well. So once again, I’m Chris Legaspi, until next time. Get out there. Keep drawing, keep painting and build up that mileage. Bye for now.
