After making it through a lengthy interview where you are discussing all of your experience, skills and education the recruiter or hiring manager asks you a (seemingly) benign question, "so, tell me about your hobbies".If this question bothers you, then you're not alone. A LinkedIn News editor was hit with quite a lot of strong responses to an article written on this topic and we too have thoughts!"Ever been stumped by a question about your hobbies during a job interview? When hiring managers raise the question, what are they looking for in an answer? In the latest edition of Get Hired Canada, recruiters and hiring managers weigh in on whether they ask candidates how they spend their free time, and what kind of answers make a candidate stand out."In this episode we are going to discuss the often difficult process of finding the right hire - but does it have to be so difficult? Could we solve this issue by: focusing on what the role actually needs to be executed on successfullymatching education, skillset and experience to the technical function of a rolestop hiring for personality and hire for technical capabilitySome interesting questions to consider as we discuss this topic! We'd love to hear your thoughts on this too - what did we miss, what don't we know?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Stories are submitted anonymously online and can also be sent directly to us here at Bare Slate via our support portal at bareslate.caYou can also join our Private Facebook group where members comment on stories throughout the week and some answers are featured in the show!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~If you like what you hear, don’t forget to comment, subscribe and leave a review. If you LOVE what you hear, don’t forget to share it!PR and Media Requests here: hello@bareslate.caYou can learn more about us here: https://www.bareslate.ca/ Watch us on YouTube Here: https://www.youtube.com/c/BareSlateDiscover stuff we love here: https://www.amazon.ca/shop/bareslateNote: this post may contain affiliate links and if you click and make a purchase we may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. As per the article written on theladders.com, "Three senior employees at Netflix were fired by the company after criticizing their co-workers over Slack, according to the company’s CEO, after a report claimed that the workers were let go for bad-mouthing their bosses. The Hollywood Reporter first reported that the streaming giant fired three senior marketing executives for comments aimed at leadership in what the workers thought was a private channel, citing sources. However, Netflix is singing a different tune. Ted Sarandos, the company’s co-CEO, denied that the office gossip was directed at management, but at other workers at Netflix, which went against company ethics.“What happened here was unfortunately not simply venting on Slack or a single conversation,” Sarandos said in a LinkedIn comment on July 17. “These were critical, personal comments made over several months about their peers (not their management as suggested by The Hollywood Reporter) – including during meetings when those peers were talking or presenting.“This is entirely inconsistent with those values, which is why their manager fired them. It’s also worth noting that we don’t proactively monitor Slack or email. The Slack channel was open so anyone could access the conversations even though the employees concerned thought it was private.”You can read the full article here~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Stories are submitted anonymously online and can also be sent directly to us here at Bare Slate via our support portal at bareslate.caYou can also join our Private Facebook group where members comment on stories throughout the week and some answers are featured in the show!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~If you like what you hear, don’t forget to comment, subscribe and leave a review. Episode 60 of The Get More Podcast: Capacity & What You're Capable OfWe are wrapping up Adaptability Month and today is all about identifying our capacity, and what we are capable of.Your capacity looks different from everyone else's and it's important to uncover where your boundaries are, and what the limits look like so that you don't run right past those lines on a regular basis. You also have different types of capacity like emotional/psychological capacity and physical capacity - and it can be very easy to find the limits of your physical capacity, yet difficult to set and protect the boundaries of your emotional/psychological capacity. You can definitely figure out how far you can run, and for how long, before you reach your limits. Try and keep going and you will collapse. The amount of weight you are able to lift has a big, clear, number on it and you know how high you can go. Try and pick something up that is heavier than your limit and you are headed straight towards an injury.Yet trying to quantify the capacity of our emotions, or psychological limits is very hard to do unless you pay close attention to the warning signs.Just like your muscles will give out when you reach your limits, your decision making and frustration or fatigue levels will give out when you are emotionally or psychologically 'done'. Try to keep going, without any rest, and you are headed towards burnout, stress, anxiety, and other health problems. As you move through the week, observe what your limits are and what you might have to put in place that stop you from going over the limits as you get close to them.~~~~~~~~Want to Get More? The Get More Podcast Episode 58 - Adaptability and What We KnowThis week we are taking a look at why we need to figure out how to "unlearn" our old habits, thoughts, and beliefs especially when presented with change. It's no secret that change is hard for most of us, but part of that difficulty is due to the fact that we are faced with this wave of, "ugh, I need to learn a new way to do that!?".It's not exciting to learn something new, especially when we've already learned a different way of doing it!Until now.Strong leadership requires us to be able to shift and incorporate new ideas as we go and build a new habit of deciding that change is good, old ways don't have to stay, and adjusting is simply part of the process. So let's get into it!Want to Get More? Episode 57 of The Get More Podcast: How to Relate to OthersIn this episode we discuss why you need to develop the skill of being able to relate to others (instead of assuming everyone else has to relate to us).Change is so difficult, but when we are able to relate to the people around us it makes dealing with that change a little bit easier.People change all the time and unless you understand how to pause and collect more information it is very easy to make negative assumptions and become rigid (or fixed) in your thinking, which means dealing with the changes become more and more difficult. So let's talk about it!Want to Get More? Episode 56 of The Get More Podcast: ConsistencyWe are wrapping up Confidence Month and today's episode is all about the importance of consistency when it comes to our confidence levels. As we have learned in the last year, in order to get good at something you need to practice it. And in order to practice something, you need to do it on a regular basis and do it a lot.The by-product of doing something a lot, on a regular basis, and getting good at it, is our confidence level! It goes up!The better you get at something the more confident you become in your ability to do it. Think about a job you've been in for years, or a sport that you have played forever, or a hobby that you have become incredibly good at.It took time, it took practice, and it required that you show up consistently for that activity (it didn't happen by accident). So this week we are going to pay attention to the places that we show up consistently and determine whether or not that skill can be redirected (where necessary) to more important areas of our life.Want to Get More? Episode 55 of The Get More Podcast: Awareness is Key to ConfidenceThis week is all about developing Awareness (or paying attention!) of how we think and act in our every day life - both at home and at work. Why should we care about where our thoughts, actions and focus goes?Frankly, it's pretty hard to be confident in yourself and your decisions when you have no idea where your time and energy goes each day.Think about the times where you've driven to work, or the grocery store, and can't remember how you got there.Or how about walking into a room and stopping because you can't remember why you are there. We run on auto-pilot when we aren't aware of our actions, which means we can't take action on purpose. And this is a BIG DEAL.If you are in a place right now that you aren't happy with, it means that you've let decisions happen on auto-pilot and these decisions (or lack thereof) have lead you to the people, places, and things that you have in front of you right now.The best news? Once you become aware of everything, you are able to make decisions confidently, and begin to CHOOSE the direction you want your life to go.And the more you practice making purposeful decisions, the higher your confidence goes!Want to Get More? In this episode we start to explore the first of the 4 elements of the Bare Slate Motivation Success Formula, and today it's all about values. If you were asked about your values, would you be able to answer what they are? Many of us aren't able to, because we haven't been taught to think about them, or align our life, relationships or work with them.Something to consider:Many disagreements can be traced back to a misalignment with values.Priorities are often listed by order of alignment with your values.Decision making is difficult when you don't know your value system.Fulfillment and joy is hard to achieve when your values are being ignored.Coming up on The Early Morning Experience this week we will be touching on why you may hate your job right now, and a lot of the thinking in this case is identifying where your current job may be bumping up against your value system.Want to Get More? Episode 51 of The Get More PodcastToday we are wrapping up Accountability Month with the final element in the Bare Slate Accountability Success Formula and it's all about Capacity."Capacity is the maximum amount that something can contain", and this includes you!Just like putting on that oxygen mask, you need to help yourself first when it comes to your capacity to handle everyday situations, circumstances, and decisions. One thing that leads to being at capacity is the tendency to overcommit yourself and take on too much - you literally have no room left to take on even one more small thing. Why do we do this?We may think that we 'have' to do the thing, or attend that event or meeting, or take on that project, or try and help everyone! An excellent example of this is People Pleasing, or "Nice Guy Syndrome".We think it's rude or 'not nice' to say no to others and to additional commitments (and this can include our perceived need to help others). As we like to say, "Don't make your problem, my problem!" which essentially means that you don't have to take on the problems of the world when you have your own to deal with.Click here to watch Episode 90 of the Ask More Get More Show and our conversation with Maros Cincura discussing Nice Guy Syndrome~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Stories are submitted anonymously online and can also be sent directly to us here at Bare Slate via our support portal at bareslate.caYou can also join our Private Facebook group where members comment on stories throughout the week and some answers are featured in the show!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~If you like what you hear, don’t forget to comment, subscribe and leave a review. Today we are looking at Purpose and being accountable so that we can understand the "why" behind your yes! Let's think about that for just a moment; when you say YES to everything, you're automatically saying NO to the things you may find important. There is an opportunity cost to saying yes to all things all of the time - and this can be where People Pleasing enters the room. When we take a step back and really understand why we are committing to something, it becomes clear whether or not we will:a. actually have the time and capacity to follow throughb. it's something we really want to show up forc. reduce the feelings of guilt, stress and anxiety  There is great benefit to saying no to commitments, especially when you don't understand the why behind the decision, because it leaves room in your life to fully commit to those things/habits/tasks/projects that you genuinely feel excited to focus on.How many yes' are you giving out?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Stories are submitted anonymously online and can also be sent directly to us here at Bare Slate via our support portal at bareslate.caYou can also join our Private Facebook group where members comment on stories throughout the week and some answers are featured in the show!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~If you like what you hear, don’t forget to comment, subscribe and leave a review.
