This is the official podcast of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists - RSCLT. We were established on 6 January 1945 to promote the art and science of speech and language therapy – the care for individuals with communication, swallowing, eating and drinking difficulties.We are the professional body for speech and language therapists in the UK; providing leadership and setting professional standards.We facilitate and promote research into the field of speech and language therapy, promote better education and training of speech and language therapists and provide information for our members and the public about speech and language therapy.

What happens to children on a waiting list when they aren't receiving treatment? How many continue to need intervention and how many improve spontaneously? It's difficult to research because it's too hard to collect this data ethically and also without impacting the subjects and therefore potentially changing the results.Nevertheless, occasional opportunities arise for reviewing data from waiting lists. 'Primary progressive aphasia (PPA)' is an umbrella term for a group of language-led dementias which leave people unable to communicate effectively with others. PPA can have a devastating impact on people's ability to function and socialise. Speech and language therapy offers a range of potential benefits to people with PPA. We all know that the NHS is under enormous pressure and so we need to start being more innovative about ways in which we can resource the NHS.
