Great chat with screenwriter Jeff Hupp on his latest project "Band on the Run"A story at the height of the Detroit Garage Rock revival in 1999, a wheelchair-bound father, his musician son and his band bond on a raucous road trip as they war with a rival band on the way to South By Southwest in Austin, Texas. It's Little Miss Sunshine meets Almost Famous meets KodachromeBorn and raised in Berkley, MI, Jeff Hupp is an advertising professional, musician, and screenwriter. In the 90s, Jeff's band, the Detroit-based The Atomic Numbers, performed and recorded for various record labels, had a song included in Super Sucker, a movie from Michigan-native Jeff Daniels and rocked venues across the US, including the infamous local fave, Pine Knob Music Theatre, in Clarkston, MI.During the pandemic, Jeff began screenwriting and soon placed in major screenwriting competitions, including The Page International (for his script Maybe Before New Year's) and the Austin Screenwriting Competition (for his comedy script "Band Freaks"). Jeff is looking forward to producing and directing his first indie film, Band on the Run in the summer of '23, utilizing an all Michigan-based production crew and actors. For more information on the movie:  https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/band-on-the-run-a-road-trip-comedy-indie-film#/Support the showIt's Rock 'n' Roll Fridays!FacebookYoutubeInstagramWebsite Got a Great Musical Story? Great interview with David Downham, owner of The Gradwell House Studios.Yes, it was originally a house with a basement studio/DIY show space in Maple Shade NJ on W. Gradwell Ave. The studio has since occupied a chop shop in Gloucester City (2002-2004), some slumlord's leaky-roofed shit-hole on Atlantic ave in Haddon Heights (2004-2016) and our new wonderful and permanent home just around the corner in a repurposed, custom designed and built Masonic Lodge (Lodge 191 Y'all) on Station Ave in downtown Haddon Heights, NJ.The original basement location was in Steve Poponi's (co-owner) rented Maple Shade, NJ home for 4 long . . . carpet-remnant-wall-covered, does-that-band-own-a-tuner, Samson-mixer-having, pj-whelihans-chicken-caesar-salad-clogging-up-the-utility-sink-right-behind-my-mix-position-smelling years. After Steve’s move to the Gloucester City chop-shop location Dave Downham entered the picture as a sparkly blue-eyed second engineer. Coming from his own soon-to-be defunct Cherry Hill NJ "Couches in the Desert" basement studio Dave and Steve became 50/50 partners.  In addition to recording horrible bands (it was 2004, think high school Metalcore bands) and a couple good ones (really just Sugar Queef), the Gloucester location also continued to host live shows for touring bands (pretend there is an epic list here) and tons of local garbage. The limitations of this space and bondo dust in the air as well as the junkyard dogs and the prostitute-sidewalk-highway and the both-my-landlords-went-to-jail-1-month-after-we-signed-our-lease got Steve and Dave looking to move The Gradwell House again thus bringing them to Haddon Heights, NJ. The original Haddon Heights location was built with recording bands "live" in mind, and after 12 leaky-roofed years in this rented location, the limitations of this space once again got them looking to relocate, this time to buy! In 2016 The Gradwell House opened its permanent home, a custom built, wonderfully flexible, 6000 square foot music facility in downtown Haddon Heights.SUBSCRIBE TO ROCK ’N’ FRIDAYS PODCAST!https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEvn_21MsmWSK7fqOPNLjJA/videos   Support the showIt's Rock 'n' Roll Fridays!FacebookYoutubeInstagramWebsite Got a Great Musical Story? Great interview with Peter Brown of Loudo Guitars. At 14, he took apart his Squire Stratocaster, and then hastily reassembled it when he saw his mom’s reaction. It wasn’t until Brown discovered the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery in Phoenix, Arizona, that he finally found his calling. At Roberto Venn, Brown trained himself to work long hours, performing complicated technical guitar repairs and honing in on elements of instrument design. He began to form his own theories about the craft of guitar-making, and set out to explore some of its mysteries.“In the guitar industry, there’s a whole lot of mojo with how things work,” Brown said. “People know a little bit, and whatever you can’t explain becomes mojo. It seems to be one of those ways people sell stuff.“I see it as a science,” he said. “If your mechanic tried to sell you on mojo, you wouldn’t take your car there.”One of them took a shine to his ideas about guitar-making, and told him, “You’re laudo,’” which his classmate interpreted as Latin for “praiseworthy.” The Imperium, Pete Brown’s inaugural guitar model for his Loudo brand. Credit: Matt Walker for Loudo. He would spend the next 15 years restoring and rebuilding guitars, all the while refining the designs of his own instrument models. One of the first musicians to play the Imperium is Zach LoPresti, a longtime friend of Brown’s and Loudo’s first brand ambassador. A talented improvisational player with the bands Gnarbot and Out of the Beardspace, LoPresti said the Imperium allows him to switch among a variety of feels on the fly.Read Full Article Here from NJ Pen is free thanks to regular, small contributions. The Punk Rebellion

The Punk Rebellion

2022-06-0216:52

Great interview with Nancy Barile. She along with countless other women in the city in the early 1980s,  was an integral part of Philadelphia’s punk and hardcore scenes, as a promoter, manager and writer. Nancy Barile, decided to write her own memoir, I’m Not Holding Your Coat. Now in its 2nd edition, the book struck a chord. From disaffected Catholic schoolgirl and 1970s music fanatic to instigator on the 1980s hardcore punk scene, Nancy Barile pursued freedom at a time when punk music was new and dangerous. While booking some of Philadelphia's earliest DIY shows featuring Minor Threat and SSD, and managing raw local acts, Nancy was at the fierce center of the action as insurgents such as the Dead Kennedys and Black Flag rewrote history. She survived punk riots and urban decay, ran the streets with outcasts, and, in her rebellion, ultimately found true love--and a powerful understanding of human nature.Subscribe Here: https://bit.ly/37qGQQrLearn More: http://www.rocknrollfridays.comSupport the showIt's Rock 'n' Roll Fridays!FacebookYoutubeInstagramWebsite Got a Great Musical Story?
