Peruvian chemical biologist, conservationist, and National Geographic Explorer, Dr. Rosa Vasquez Espinoza, combines science and storytelling to share the fascinating conservation work she is doing in the Amazon Rainforest. Dr. Rosa founded the nonprofit Amazon Research Internacional and is currently studying stingless bees -- leading the first chemical characterization of Amazonian stingless bees and medicinal honey in Peru. Her work takes her from working with native experts deep in the Amazon forests, to collaborating with some  the best minds in science, to sharing  on social media what a scientist looks like -- with cute earrings, a love for native infused fashion, and a love of dance. She has journeyed from discovering novel antibiotics and green chemistry solutions during her Ph.D. to positively influencing conservation law and leading innovative expeditions. Today, Dr. Rosa travels to the most extreme environments on the planet --  from the Amazon Rainforest; to Yellowstone’s acidic, boiling waters; to Alaska’s frozen lakes -- searching for new biodiversity and interconnecting science with indigenous knowledge to create positive changes in the world. You can help! Her current  project (starting June 2024) helps Peruvian women and girls develop their own stingless-beekeeping businesses that empower these women and their families, as well as help sustain the Amazon Rainforest. Contact Info:Dr.  Rosa Vasquez Espinoza - GuestDr. Rosa's LinkedIn accountDr. Rosa's IG accountDr. Rosa's websiteJulie Berman - HostJulie Berman's LinkedIn Profile@womencooljobs (Instagram) www.womenwithcooljobs.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I absolutely LOVE being the host and producer of "Women with Cool Jobs", where I interview women who have unique, trailblazing, and innovative careers. Stephanie Skryzowski is a Fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for nonprofits and an entrepreneur. She created a company of fully remote CFOs (and other professionals) who help nonprofits around the world manage their money to make a more powerful impact on the people and communities they serve. Stephanie specializes in helping nonprofits, where interpreting financial information correctly can mean the difference between an organization thriving or not. She helps them better understand their numbers and use that information to make smart decisions that will help grow their impact and their income. They get a fraction of a CFO (for a fraction of the cost!)...which is often all they need as they are still small and growing. She started working for nonprofits and leading international finance teams around the world, including Afghanistan, Haiti, Nepal, Nicaragua, Malawi, Mali, and Senegal.  She traveled around the world making sure the nonprofit's financial management systems and teams were strong. She wants other women to know about the fractional leadership model, because it is applicable across so many industries. It can give women the opportunity to build their own business and control their time and money! She now has a team of 16 full-time employees serving hundreds of nonprofits around the globe at 100 Degrees Consulting. Gretchen (Holt) Witt paired cookies with cancer and created one of the most powerful, clever combinations to raise awareness and much-needed funding for pediatric cancer. Gretchen unexpectedly formed what would become Cookies for Kids' Cancer in 2007, after her 2-year-old son Liam was diagnosed with pediatric cancer. Due to her background in PR and communications , she understood how challenging it was to talk about cancer, let alone pediatric cancer. She also knew that it would take a lot more awareness, advocacy, and funding to help children diagnosed with cancer to live longer, healthier lives.By allowing people to connect cookies with learning about kids cancer, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is now a well-respected nonprofit that has had more than 16,000 grassroots fundraising events in all 50 states and 26 countries and has granted more than $21 million to the leading pediatric cancer research centers across the country. Until recently, Gretchen worked full time in PR & communications and part time to help drive the nonprofit forward. The representation of women has remained stagnant in the National Security field at about 20% across the board.Lauren Buitta, a national security expert, is on a mission to get more women into this field. She is the founder and CEO of Girl Security – the only organization dedicated to advancing girls, women, and gender minorities in national security through supportive pathways. There's a lot more to protecting America's interests at home than just considering intelligence and the military. There's the federal government, think tanks, and even the private sector that all play a part and make up over 160 million people in the national security industry. Her goal is to bring more diversity into the national security workforce. This will also help shift ideological constructs to include a broader and more inclusive understanding of the factors that affect our safety and well-being in this country.  Lauren began her career in national security in Chicago, IL, in 2003 as a policy analyst with the National Strategy Forum, a nonpartisan national security think tank. In 2009 while attending law school, Lauren launched her consulting firm, Stele Consulting, which provided support to clients on local policy issues, including exclusionary land use policies and racial segregation in Chicago. When she considered what was needed in 2016 (and what was the beginning of Girl Security), Lauren recognized both the continued underrepresentation of women in national security and the need for a more intersectional approach to security.  ResourcesGirl SecurityContact Info:Lauren Bean Buitta - GuestLauren Bean Buitta's LinkedIn Profilecontact@girlsecurity.org (Email)Julie Berman - Hostwww.womenwithcooljobs.com@womencooljobs (Instagram) Julie Berman's LinkedIn Profile------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I absolutely LOVE being the host and producer of "Women with Cool Jobs", where I interview women who have unique, trailblazing, and innovative careers. It's back to school for kids and parents! It's a time of renewal, change, and getting back into a groove. If you're a mom whose child has gone back to school and you're wondering about your next steps and if it's time to find full-time work,  it's essential to know about “returnships”. Returnships are an on-ramp for caregivers to get back into the workforce and find a full-time job.In this replay, Tami Forman, the former Executive Director of Path Forward shares her mission to bring talent back into the workforce and to identify future talent through returnships.  Returnships are like the cousin of internships. For internships, you're a young adult who is in or who has just graduated from college. For returnships, you're an adult who already worked for at least 5 years, took time off to care for a child or an adult, and you're now wanting to return to the workforce. As of the time of original recording,  Path Forward had worked with more than 80 employers, including Amazon, Netflix, Walmart, Apple, Verizon, and more. We discuss topics such as: What's a returnship?Who's a good fit for a returnship? How does the process work? How do you get one?Tami also discuss her career path and what it's like to be a visionary and a nonprofit executive who wears many hats.  Resources50 Ways to Get a Job , a book by Dev Aujla Path ForwardContact Info:Tami Forman - GuestTami Forman's LinkedIn ProfileJulie Berman - Hostwww.womenwithcooljobs.com@womencooljobs (Instagram) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I absolutely LOVE being the host and producer of "Women with Cool Jobs", where I interview women who have unique, trailblazing, and innovative careers. If there’s someone you want to connect with, whether for podcasting, networking, or to make a new friend, there are some easy steps you can follow to initiate the connection. In this episode, I share my process and tips that I've learned over the past 3+ years for how I've been able to connect with some of the coolest people. From the beginning, I have had a really great success rate for people responding to me.You'll get insight on how to write an email or direct message (DM) that shows: You are authentically interested in who they are and what they’re bringing into the world. You’ve made it easy to connect by providing some different options with a scheduling link or where they can share their availability. You’ve been specific about why you are reaching out. You're very respectful and understand that we all live very busy lives. You always try to give people the benefit of the doubt! (This helps you be optimistic for the future response of "Yes!")------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I absolutely LOVE being the host and producer of "Women with Cool Jobs", where I interview women who have unique, trailblazing, and innovative careers.
