In this episode, Aaron and Kevin talk about the words of Jesus to the first disciples, "Follow me." How do you think about this concept of following Jesus? Have you ever really considered what Jesus is calling you to do? Aaron and Kevin talk about what it practically means to follow Jesus. This involves following and imitating other people, and it also means living in such a way that in us and through us people will get to see and hear Jesus and imitate him.
In this week's episode, Aaron and Kevin talk about Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and how Jesus is our coming King. He is our ruler and Lord and his kingdom has no end. So, in this conversation the guys talk about what it looks like to have Jesus as our Lord and what it is that we need salvation from. On Palm Sunday, the crowds shouted, "Hosanna, Hosanna" which means "save us now." So, do we cry, "Hosanna?" If so, from what do we need saving? And, to whom do we even cry Hosanna? As always, it's our goal that you'll take something you hear in this conversation and start another conversation with somebody else. We hope you enjoy it!
Aaron and Kevin discuss Mark chapter 12 where Jesus is in the temple in Jerusalem in the last week of his life. He's being challenged by many opponents regarding his teaching. But, he doesn't back down. In this conversation we'll talk about the courage and strength of Jesus and what it looks like for us to live with courage having our identity rooted in Jesus. In this week's conversation, Aaron and Kevin discuss the importance of understanding Biblical places, dates, and names that we encounter when reading the Scriptures. We often skip over these important historical pieces and jump right to "what does this Bible passage mean for my life" instead of first reading the Bible in the context to which it was written. With that in mind, this conversation talks about some important historical facts in the Gospel of Mark, particularly who Herod is as we read in Mark 6. We hope you enjoy it!
There are many ways to respond to Jesus. But, there's one way that's not possible: apathy. When it comes down to it, you either have to receive Jesus for who he is, or you have to deny him. There's no middle ground with Jesus. We see this reality in the Gospel of Mark as different people respond to Jesus in different ways. In this week's conversation, Aaron and Kevin discuss this reality, but they also take on issues like spiritual warfare, demonic possession, and the role that discipleship plays in combating those things. In this episode, the guys discuss some of the unique ways that Mark writes his Gospel. They all discuss demon-possession and our modern understanding of it.
In this week's episode, Aaron and Kevin discuss the first Christian martyr Stephen. Stephen was a man who was described in Acts 6 as being full of the Holy Spirit and of faith and wisdom. As he was being persecuted for his bold proclamation of Jesus, he took that as an opportunity to bear witness to the Gospel of Jesus. In this conversation Aaron and Kevin talk about what it means to "bear witness" and how often that won't be the most popular thing. It might not gain us notoriety. Instead, it may even cause people to walk away from us. Are we okay with that? The guys discuss the importance of discipleship - that is, real, true, relational, long lasting walking together in the faith with other people as the thing that especially gives us strength and courage to continue bearing witness to Jesus even when that makes life difficult. They discuss the fact that Jesus is wisdom incarnate - that is, wisdom has come into the flesh. This also means that the wisdom of God is in our flesh as well. Do you see it? Do you notice it? In this week's episode, Aaron and Kevin are having a conversation with their moms. That's right, these are the women who raised them. This conversation takes place as we've been discussing characters in the Bible who have been given wisdom. Proverbs 31 describes the wise words of a mom, to King Lemuel, about how he should live as a faithful man of God, and what to look for in a faithful woman of God. It's very likely you have not heard of these two "wise guys" named Heman and Ethan. But, after this conversation, we hope that you will learn from them. In particular, during this conversation, Aaron and Kevin discuss the faithful practice of lament (as demonstrated by Heman and Ethan). As we endure hardship in this life, we cry out to God - in faith - and thereby deepen our relationship with him. As we wrap up our study of Isaiah 40:1-11, the people of God are beckoned to get up on a high mountain, lift up their voices, and proclaim the good news of salvation that they have. But, to do it without fear. Why is it included that they should lift up their voices without fear? Because, most people are fearful about putting themselves out there and proclaiming the good news of Jesus. And yet, that's the reason that we have been saved. We've been saved for a purpose. In this week's episode Aaron and Kevin are having a conversation about Isaiah 40:6-8 where Isaiah describes how everything in this world is transitory. It breaks. It falls apart. It doesn't last. Even in physics there's the concept of entropy which states that there is a gradual decline of all things into disorder. But there is one thing that lasts forever. In this week's episode, Aaron and Kevin are talking about Ruth chapter 4. As we get to the end of Ruth 4, we finally see that Boaz is the redeemer of Ruth, Naomi, their land, and the future generations (including Jesus himself!). But, what is redemption? That's one of those church words that gets thrown around with others like salvation, justification, etc. It is a Biblical word/concept. As a matter of fact, it's all throughout the Bible. And, Jesus is called our "redeemer." But, what have we been redeemed from? Redeemed to? How does that affect our daily living? Well, those are all things talked about in this week's episode. In this conversation, the guys discuss what it looks like to lay it all at the feet of Jesus. Jesus uses the line in Luke 10 that he is the, "One thing necessary."
