Description

My name is Shelby John and July 1, 2002 was the first day of my second life, the day I got sober! And I haven’t found it necessary to take a drink or a drug since! Early sobriety is not the same as how you feel after you stay sober for a year to many. The brain begins to "wake up" and you are asking questions like "Who am I now?" or "What do I want for my life in recovery". My sobriety has given me the freedom to dedicate my life to helping other sober women in long-term sobriety as a therapist and a coach.  In this podcast, you will hear real-life talk about healing trauma, building confidence and transforming your life beyond recovery! Let's thrive in long-term recovery together.

My guest today is Peggi Cooney. Peggi is a fellow social worker, an instructor coach for the UC Davis in California, an author, and the host of Hola sober. In this episode, we delve into the often-overlooked topic of secondary trauma. This is a particularly important topic for therapists, social workers, and other professionals who work in those fields, as they are frequently exposed to the traumatic stories and experiences of their clients. It’s also an important topic for those who are in recovery due to their own past experiences of trauma and their ongoing work in support groups and recovery communities. We’ll be exploring what secondary trauma is, how it can manifest, and the impact it can have on those who experience it. We’ll also discuss strategies for recognizing and addressing secondary trauma, including self-care practices, seeking support from the people around you, and setting boundaries to protect your well-being.This episode is a must-listen if you’re a therapist, social worker, or someone in recovery. Tune in to learn more about secondary trauma and how to care for yourself while supporting others through their own struggles.Links:Peggi's WebsiteFacebook GroupOh, and by the way, if you didn’t know, I have an awesome course called Creating Healthy Boundaries; it's affordable, easy to follow, and will make a big difference in how you feel. Sarah is a mental health profession and she is also a sober woman. She was great at pretending she had it all together. The internal consequences were for real though and through recovery she was able to relate began to understand that addiction was only a symptom of what was really going on with her.Sarah shares how she stopped comparing out and started listening for the feelings a phenomenon she calls Intuitive Living. She learned healthy habits and then began to embrace a sort of “unroutine” lifestyle. Yes we coined this phrase today.Life is often quite hard but it is easier with predictable routines that help you build trust and confidence. You can find Sarah on Facebook here or smoore.hec@gmail.comSupport the showSupport the showOh, and by the way, if you didn’t know, my program Sober Freedom Transformation is now open! When you are on the cusp of change you are sitting with raw emotion, feeling all the things.  Your mind races, your heart pounds, you can’t sleep, healthy food is unappealing, it can be so uncomfortable that you might even wonder “why, am I in recovery anyway”?These are the warning signs that times are a changing.  Even the most positive and exciting change still brings about a lot of emotion. And it is happening all the time.Often it's boundaries that we need in order to protect ourselves and our sobriety from being overextended or trampled on like a welcome mat. I know that's what really helped me take control of my life and learn to love myself.  If you are like "Yes I need that",  check out the Creating Healthy Boundaries course, it has just the tools you need.If you want to live emotionally well and FREE in sobriety you have to become willing to make changes in a bunch of areas.  This is super simple stuff but not always easy and or me I didn't do any of it until I learned to listen to those who had gone before me. And I want every sober woman to have the opportunity as well. To LOVE their lives in recovery and pursue the desires of their heart.  If you feel the tug on your heart, this is exactly what we do in the Sober Freedom Inner Circle.  Just send me a message on the Shelby John Coaching Facebook page and say FREEDOM and I will tell you more about it. This week I had the pleasure of talking with with Teresa another sober women in the Confident Sober Women Facebook group. She share her story of hope and recovery and also the importance of having guides in your life to come along side you.  Living well in recovery requires support. Service to others is another form of spirituality. Using gratitude as an action leads to deeper connection with others, our energy source and ourselves. We all have choices we can choose to stay in the pain or get into the solution and do the work. The reminder that small daily doses of change is how we get the big changes in our lives. Connecting with your spiritual side is a personal journey that requires deep introspection and consideration. Often we take what we learned growing up and then mesh it with things we learn in adulthood to land in a place of connection and peace that feels right for us.Nicole is a friend to Confident Sober Women and has a beautiful story of how she grew from what she learned in the Catholic Church and became more tolerant and humble. She shares openly about her experience and how she practices spirituality now.We talk about sobriety and how its possible to not believe in God and still work a strong recovery program even in AA.
