I wish we could just have a magic formula for every single piano lesson we teach, but we all eventually realize that this is not the case. Do you ever wish you could have at least a guide on how to start a new piano student? There are certain steps to prepare yourself for the first piano lesson with a new student. First, identify the type of student you will be teaching based on age and musical background. Second, define the type of lesson you are going to be teaching and plan the music scores and other materials for the new student. Make sure you have all your forms and policies ready to be handed out to the student or parents. The next step is to ask yourself if you will require the parents to be present during the first lesson. Then prepare yourself to be in the right state of mind according to the type of student you will be working with. The final step is for you to plan the main goal and assignment for the first lesson. Listen to the full episode to hear about:Types of students we receive during the first lessonWhat type of first lesson you are teaching? What materials should you prepare?Forms and policiesShould the parents be present during the first lesson? How will you present yourself? What should the first assignment be?Links:Website: httpiano.comBlog post: https://httpiano.com/how-to-start-a-new-piano-student/Instagram: @howtoteachpianoFacebook page: @howtoteachpianopodcastAmazon recommendations for piano teachers: https://httpiano.com/piano-pedagogy/Support the production of this podcast and blog:Patreon: patreon.com/howtoteachpiano

As a piano teacher, I am used to receiving new calls or text messages from prospective students, but I am always confronted by the same question: should you teach a trial piano lesson? A trial piano lesson offers you several benefits. You need to think about a trial lesson as your sales pitch. You are running a business, and you can show your potential clients why they should buy your exclusive product or service. You need to understand that your clients are looking for a service provider, but they are the ones who need to understand the value they will receive from you and why they will also be evaluated as potential clients. Listen to the full episode to hear about:Why do prospective students ask for a trial piano lesson? Why you should offer a trial piano lessonShould you charge for a trial piano lessonHow to include a trial piano lesson in your studio policyWhat to do during a trial piano lessonLinks:Website: httpiano.comBlog post: https://httpiano.com/should-you-teach-a-trial-piano-lesson/Instagram: @howtoteachpianoFacebook page: @howtoteachpianopodcastAmazon recommendations for piano teachers: https://httpiano.com/piano-pedagogy/Support the production of this podcast and blog:Patreon: patreon.com/howtoteachpiano
