There was once a time when I could give graduate students steps for writing their dissertation, and it would apply to all of them. Well, that day has come and gone. Every chair has their own ideas about what a great dissertation entails, and sadly, sometimes it's not only incorrect but also makes no sense. However, if you want to graduate, you must "Do what they tell you to do!"
