Dr. Eric Torng interviews star graduate student Kate Skocelas, an MSU University Fellow and a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellow. Kate talks about overcoming lupus, applying for the NDSEG fellowship, her fascinating research which includes using evolution to build more secure distributed systems, and being a graduate student in a pandemic. Kate also has her own podcast included in the links below. Also, since this interview took place, Kate has advanced to the semifinals of the 2021 (virtual) Reach Out Science Slams!
Dr. Xiaoming Liu, IAPR fellow and MSU Foundation Professor, talks about his groundbreaking work in face recognition and perception. Get a glimpse into his new research in perception for autonomous driving and his work on coping with gender and racial bias in face recognition algorithms.
Dr. Eric Torng, Associate Chair for Research and Faculty Development, interviews new CSE faculty member, Dr. Borzoo Bonakdarpour. Borzoo got his masters and doctoral degrees from MSU and returns to MSU after working in Europe, Canada, and at Iowa State University. Borzoo talks about a new NSF project, his research program in general, and working with Turing award winner Joseph Sifakis. Borzoo also compares and contrasts research in Europe, Canada, and the US. You can also learn about Borzoo's hidden musical talent and what instrument he is now picking up.
Dr. Eric Torng interviews Dr. Jiliang Tang who has just been awarded the ACM SIGKDD Rising Star Award. Tang's notable work includes research into representation learning, especially on graphs and its applications on the internet and social media domains."  Besides discussing this award, Eric and Jiliang talk about representation learning, a new book on deep learning and graphs Jiliang and his lab have just released, plus Jiliang offers advice for anyone deciding between industry and academia.
Join Dr. Eric Torng as he interviews new CSE faculty member, Dr. Emily Dolson. Learn about how she uses her expertise with evolution to study ways to fight cancer and how she and her lab pivoted to develop a method for smaller hospitals to disinfect PPE to help with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Eric Torng interviews rising star Dr. Josh Siegel to talk about Josh's paper which received the 2020 IEEE Sensors Journal Best Paper award. This paper won out over all papers published in IEEE Sensors for the past year.
