Alex, Matt, and Rocco each break down a favorite project that Steven Spielberg almost made throughout his long and storied career. An incredibly expensive adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson's Robopocalypse is Alex's pick, since he once got a moment to discuss the project with Michael Bay, who inherited the script (and some leftover sets) from Spielberg. Matt reveals Spielberg's fascination with modern toilet innovator, Thomas Crapper, and a possible film based on the book Flushed with Pride, before diving deep on what SHREK would have looked like if Spielberg made it back in the 1990s with Bill Murray and Steve Martin. Then, Rocco brings in a Michael Crichton adaptation of PIRATE LATITUDES, a no-fun realism take on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN that sounds like it was based on Jimmy Buffett song (even if it wasn't).And that's the end of our new mini-marathon, folks! This summer, we're gettin' in the ring with Steven for the SPIELBERG SUMMER SLAM! We're hitting up his incredible run of blockbusters from the genre-defining JAWS (1975) up through his hand-wave screen technology-introducing MINORITY REPORT (2002)!The NeverEnding Movie Marathon is a weekly podcastic celebration of cinema. Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise finally team up to pre-cog the future of our real-life surveillance state with this ultra-paranoid sci-fi thriller from the GOAT of that exact sub-sub-genre, Philip K. Dick! Do all of the visual effects and fake-outs still hold up almost 20 years later after MINORITY REPORT blew up the 2002 summer blockbuster? Maybe not, but the ice-cold vision of a tomorrow without social media is fascinating and that murder's row of supporting performances from Max von Sydow, Samantha Morton, Colin Farrell (and his chewing gum), Tim Blake Nelson, Neal McDonough... Not to mention, Lois Smith goin' in for the kiss?! I'm giving away too much, just listen. It's a new mini-marathon, folks! We pick up the second half of our conversation about SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998) with the incredibly epic and ultra-violent Normandy Beach sequence that saw Steven Spielberg put all of his technical skill and wizardry behind the camera to create the most realistic portrayal of this turning point in World War II and world history. Plus, we finally get to Rocco's Connections Corner that has a couple of surprises from Matt. It's a new mini-marathon, folks! Matt has been preparing for this episode his entire life, so we're dedicating TWO PARTS to cover Steven Spielberg's epic World War II sad-venture film, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998). Alex and Rocco join Matt to discuss how Spielberg and writer Robert Rodat crafted the "documentary realism" approach to the true story of the Niland Brothers, why Tom Hanks decided it was time to take his friendship with Steve to the next level, the trial-by-fire boot camp that the military advisor Dale Dye put Vin Diesel, Giovanni Ribisi, Jeremy Davies, Adam Goldberg, Edward Burns, Barry Pepper, and Tom Sizemore through, which almost convinced a few of them to quit, and who almost played their roles instead.Next week, we'll continue with Saving Private Ryan Part Two, kicking off with a behind-the-scenes breakdown of how the Normandy Beach battle sequences were created. In 1993 filmmaker Steven Spielberg made dinosaurs walk and the style of blockbuster that he had helped create completely extinct. JURASSIC PARK (1993) is a film that changed it all, including the lives of your hosts, Alex, Matt, and Rocco, especially when it came to the toys and their DINO DAMAGE! We detail how Michael Crichton, David Koepp, Dennis Muren, George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy, John Williams, and Stevie Spielberg made it all happen, why we fell in love with Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), and why this might be the worst franchise in history after JURASSIC PARK: DOMAIN-- Err,I mean, JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION. While Rocco is away, Alex and Matt will play... with their little alien pal from Brodo Asogi! E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial has been delighting adults and terrifying children for 40 years now, becoming an instant blockbuster, then an icon for Spielberg's company Amblin, an Easter egg in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, and eventually a punchline in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers. But we think this lil guy deserves so much more! After all, E.T. is quite possibly Steven Spielberg's best and most personal work to date. It's a new mini-marathon, folks! Matt returns to talk about DAUGHTER OF THE SEA, the short film he made with his wife, and to discuss that artifact-lovin', Nazi-punchin', fedora-doffin', bullwhip-snappin' daddy, Harrison Ford! Steven Spielberg and George Lucas joined forces for RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, the first Indiana Jones movie in the five film franchise, an American James Bond romp that definitely belongs in a museum... of Cinema! Plus, Rocco and Alex are here to talk about the making of the film and the Disneyland ride, which they both love dearly. It's a new mini-marathon, folks! "We're gonna need a bigger podcast!" So, Alex and Rocco invite on STUNG (2015) screenwriter and expert in all things shark, Adam Aresty, to discuss Spielberg's first blockbuster, the one that changed it all, and made everyone afraid of the water... But first, Rocco and Alex give you some context on the Hollywood Blockbuster, how Steven Spielberg rose from nowhere to the savior of the film industry in an uncertain time, our theories about his upcoming semi-auto-biopic THE FABELMANS, and how Amblin Entertainment dropping the G has confused us our entire lives. The NeverEnding Movie Marathon is a weekly podcastic celebration of cinema. We've come to the end of our Tom Cruise mini-marathon, but honestly, folks, what a way to go out! Most of us doubted that 'Top Gun: Maverick' was going to be good, but no one (seriously, NO ONE) predicted that it was going to be GREAT! And perhaps even better than the original...?Rocco and Alex start off with their opening thoughts on the new film before sounding the spoiler alarm to go deep on Cruise's latest masterpiece. We debate the strange career of former architect and current "legacyquel master builder" Joseph Kosinski, if Glen Powell's Hangman is meant to be seen as the Iceman or Maverick of the new class, how sweet that entire third act with Miles Teller truly is, what Christopher McQuarrie might have added in his final polish to the screenplay, and what Alex did down in San Diego for the 'Maverick' junket and premiere on the USS Midway.Plus, stick around to the end for a preview of our next series! The NeverEnding Movie Marathon is a weekly podcastic celebration of cinema. TV writer and our own Tom Cruise correspondent, Gina Ippolito, returns to the NeverEnding Movie Marathon to talk TOP GUN... and a million other things, since she, Alex, and Rocco keep getting derailed to discuss which state has the best rollercoasters, if you can wipe down another man's cat, and Marlon Brando's food pranks on Frank Sinatra. On topic, they debate the future of Cruise's career and whether he can keep up the stunt game for much longer, if Kelly McGillis's Charlie actually has enough going on to consider her a "good" character (and her real-life inspiration),  and if "Danger Zone" or "Playing with the Boys" is the best song on the soundtrack. For more of Alex talkin' TOP GUN, check out "IMDb Getting Ready for Maverick's Return Presented by USAA Insurance" on IMDb.com, Friday, May 27 at 10am PT. You'll get to see our interviews with the 'Top Gun: Maverick' cast and so much more. Plus, next week, Alex and Rocco will be back here on the NeverEnding Movie Marathon to discuss 'Maverick' WITH SPOILERS, so go see the movie now, people! The NeverEnding Movie Marathon is a weekly podcastic celebration of cinema. Tony versus Ridley in Three Rounds! Two Scotts enter the ring, but only one Scott will be crowned King of Movies!Rocco represents Ridley Scott with three films that he loves: ALIEN (1979), BLADE RUNNER (1982), and MATCHSTICK MEN (2003), while Alex toasts Tony Scott with a trio of absolute bangers: THE HUNGER (1983), ENEMY OF THE STATE (1998), and TRUE ROMANCE (1993), in three themed rounds of ridiculous debate! The NeverEnding Movie Marathon is a weekly podcastic celebration of cinema. Paul Thomas Anderson's primal scream about coincidence, fate, frogs, and Hollywood is on the table today thanks to our friend, Alex Kauffman. She reveals that at 18-years-old she got a Magnolia-inspired tattoo that she maaaaybe regrets getting back then as she, Rocco, and Alex Logan try to get to the bottom of what the hell this movie actually means, and if it is a masterpiece, a mess, or perhaps, both? The trio discuss how they first found the film over a shared infatuation with Julianne Moore, how Tom Cruise almost overshadows the entire project (and maybe kinda deserves to), how John C. Reilly's hilarious role was inspired by the show "Cops," how Philip Seymour Hoffman's Phil Parma character is like human sage, and how it all connects to the great NeverEnding Movie Marathon that has taken the next few weeks to go Tom Cruisin' the USA!The NeverEnding Movie Marathon is a weekly podcastic celebration of cinema. Today, Rocco and Alex kick off our May Double Feature... Tom Cruisin’ USA! We begin with a handful of films that you’ve NEVER seen as these are all near-misses for the Cruise Missile. This is Tom Cruise Almost Made!We begin with his near-miss launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man in an adaptation that never quite found its footing in the mid-2000s. Cruise says that he didn't think the project was going to work at the time, but his tune may have changed with his cameo as a multiverse version of Iron Man in Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. We follow up with another would-be Raimi adaptation based on Ed Brubaker's Sleeper. We also discuss what happened with Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of HP Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness, a would-be $150 million monsterpiece shot in 3D and produced by James Cameron. And, we end by going deep on Cruise's relationship with Steven Spielberg that almost led to another World War II film, but resulted in War of the Worlds instead. Which adaptation would you have loved to see?The NeverEnding Movie Marathon is a weekly podcastic celebration of cinema. Our April Double Feature begins with this Aussie bouquet-tossin' gem that was hand-picked by Jennifer Logan, the political activist, artist, and wife of Alex, one-third of your hosts here at the NeverEnding Movie Marathon. With Matt off making a film with his wife, Alex and Rocco are inviting their significant others on the pod to gush about the movies that they love! Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths explode fully-formed from this film onto the world stage, thanks in part to the equally funny and heart-wrenching script that came directly from the life of writer/director PJ Hogan. April Stinkers Day hacks up its hairball a little early this year as Alex, Rocco, and Matt relax their USUALLY strict #NoStinkers policy to let this mangey stray onto the pod. And we couldn't possibly celebrate another April Stinkers Day without our filmmaker friend Giovanni Iacobucci (modmythmedia.com, donut.media), who we must apologize to once more for making him watch...THE CAT IN THE HAT! A film that Mike Myers was court-ordered to make. One that also nearly spiraled his career highs had it not been for the cash cow of SHREK. Also the movie that made Dr. Seuss's widow forbid Hollywood from ever making another live-action adaptation. And somehow, one that most people have not seen... but within five minutes of watching it for this podcast, we know exactly why not! Also starring Alec Baldwin, Kelly Preston, Dakota Fanning, Spencer Breslin, Sean Hayes (in two insufferable roles), Paris Hilton, and Amy Hill; directed by Bo Welch (Tim Burton's production designer & Mr. Catherine O'Hara); written by Alec Berg, David Mandel, and Jeff Schaffer (three titans of one-word shows like Barry, Seinfeld, Veep, and Clerks), plus by whatever nonsense came out of Myers's mouth that day; shot by Emmanuel Lubezki (Sleepy Hollow, Gravity, Birdman); and produced under Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks banner! This is a stink that'll make ya think... What the hell happened here? Well, we're trying to figure that out, too.The NeverEnding Movie Marathon is a weekly podcastic celebration of cinema.
