Khalis (ਖ਼ਾਲਿਸ) is a versatile word; as well as meaning "pure" in Arabic and Sanskrit, in the Persian context it means "free" or "independent". This idea of independence forms an integral part of our vision. With this podcast we aim to supplement our publication work with meaningful discussion on history, ideology, philosophy, culture and the identity that shapes who we are today, as Sikhs in the 21st century.

In this episode of the Khalis Podcast, Ghuntas Kaur speaks about her brand new poetry book - 'History of the Lion Family'.The book is a poetry collection reflecting on Sikh and Punjabi experiences of discrimination spanning from the 1984 Sikh genocide to modern day Canada.Within the Sikh community, there is a stigma against speaking about the 1984 genocide and the trauma our people suffered. This is a result of decades of government propaganda that taught Sikhs to stay silent in fear of being jailed - or worse, killed.With the generations that lived through it growing older, it’s important that we document our history. More importantly, we need to document our emotions in regards to our experiences. These emotions are best captured in poem format. In this episode, Inni Kaur, author of the 'Journey With The Gurus' children's book series speaks about her inspiration to write, and what she hopes to achieve with her work.Inni currently serves as the Creative Director at the Sikh Research Institute (SikhRI) but has embodied a rich array of roles in the organization since 2010, including having served as the Chair of the Board and, more recently, as the CEO. We return to Season 2 this week, speaking with Sarbpreet Singh, a Boston based writer, podcaster and playwright. His newest book, The Story of the Sikhs 1469 - 1708, a retelling of Sikh History, was published in June 2021 by Penguin Random House. He is the author of the critically acclaimed Night of the Restless Spirits (Penguin Random House) a collection of short fiction about 1984 and the bestselling The Camel Merchant of Philadelphia, (Westland/Tranquebar) set in the court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. In this episode of the Khalis Podcast, Kiranjot Chahal of the Decolonized Library Project based in Toronto, speaks about postsecular and postmodern theories, as well as decolonial scholarship and work.We discuss Sikhi and Gurmat in relation to these theories and consider the role of the Sikhs within spaces that seek to address the problems caused by coloniality.Kiranjot is an academic, writer and educator with a BA in the study of Religion and an MA in Religion, Culture and Global Justice. Her doctoral research centers on bodies of literature that concern postsecularism, postcolonial theories, as well as ideas in the philosophy of religion.
