In this episode of Navigating New York, I caught up with my friend Andrew Lynch. I met Andrew last year in New York, and ever since, I've been fascinated by his story. Andrew is the founder & CEO of Mason Alexander, a talent solutions company he started in Ireland that has expanded internationally, and more recently Andrew started a new business venture starting a company called Enable, a digital services company sourcing engineering teams for clients across the globe.Beyond his impressive resume, what is really striking about Andrew is his relentless drive for progress, not perfection. In our chat, he is honest about the highs and lows of growing in business and why he's all in on what he does. I really enjoy Andrews energy and honesty - and its clear why he is a successful team leader. I hope you are as inspired by Andrews message as I am! Find Andrew on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewlynchma/Support the showPlease rate & review wherever you listen and if you would like to support the Podcast you can at buymeacoffee.comNavigating New York is proudly sponsored by Irish owned Therapie Clinic. Back by popular demand! I was so thrilled to get to sit down and chat to one of my first ever guests on Navigating New York, Maurice Barron. Maurice spoke to me in February 2021 after what had been an extremely challenging year for he  and his wife Kandice as their baby girl, Ava, was diagnosed with a rare form of Kidney Cancer with an extremely low survival rate. In our 1st episode, Maurice shared some of the darkest and most challenging moments they experienced during Ava’s treatment. Maurice also spoke about how First Lady Jill Biden’s book helped him find moments of joy as often as he could. During this time, Maurice sent a letter to the President of the United States about the journey Ava was on, and how inspiring the Biden family had been for them during their darkest moments. What transpired from that letter is a story of hope and belief. I am so thrilled to report that Ava is healthy, happy and changing the world one day at a time! I hope you enjoy this inspiring conversation. On this Episode I speak to one of Irish America’s greatest and most respected writers; Peter Quinn. Peter is a Novelist, Political Historian, and Foremost Chronicler of New York City. Peter was hired in 1979 by  Governor Hugh Carey as his chief speechwriter. He continued in that role under Governor Mario Cuomo, helping craft the Governor's 1984 Democratic Convention speech and his address on religion and politics at Notre Dame University. Peter was also chief speechwriter for Time, as well as editorial director for Time Warner, and found an avocation in writing about his Irish heritage. In his first novel, Banished Children of Eve, he explores the after-effects of the vast Irish immigration into New York City following the famine of 1847. Banished Children of Eve won an American Book Award.Looking for Jimmy: In Search of Irish America, a collection of non-fiction pieces, was published in 2007. Colum McCann has summed up Quinn's trilogy of historical detective novels -- Hour of the Cat(2005), The Man Who Never Returned (2010), and Dry Bones (2013) –have been described  as "generous and agile and profound." Quinn co-wrote the script for the 1987 television documentary "McSorley's New York," which was awarded a New York-area Emmy for "Outstanding Historical Programming." He has participated as a guest commentator in several PBS documentaries, including The Irish in America; New York: A Documentary Film; The Life and Times of Stephen Foster, as well as the Academy Award-nominated film, The Passion of Sister Rose. He was also an advisor on Martin Scorsese's film Gangs of New York.Peter’s knowledge of Irish America is unparalleled and his recent memoir “Cross Bronx” is a one-of-a-kind account of his adventures as ad man, archivist, teacher, Wall Street messenger, court officer, political speechwriter, corporate scribe, and award-winning novelist. Quinn is a New Yorker through and through and it was a great honor to have him as a guest on the Podcast.  www.newyorkpaddy.comSupport the showPlease rate & review wherever you listen and if you would like to support the Podcast you can at buymeacoffee.comNavigating New York is proudly sponsored by Irish owned Therapie Clinic. I am really excited to introduce my guest for this episode, the one and only, Damien Dempsey. It was a dream come true to get to have this chat with Damien, described by many as the "Voice of a Generation."If you’re a Damo fan, you’ll know that his song “Apple of My Eye” is all about his love for New York City - and in our conversation he tells me about how coming here as a young musician helped him to believe in himself and how he met some of his greatest friends and mentors here in the City. As a young musician in Dublin, Damien felt that people looked down on him for writing songs about the social issues of modern-day Ireland, and for singing in his own accent. These are two important attributes that have come to define Damien as an Artist. When he was in his twenties, Damien came to New York and played his songs in the famous Manhattan bar ‘Rocky Sullivan's’ – which attracted an eclectic group of artists, writers, NYPD officers, lawyers and politicians back in the day. Rocky’s  was owned by a mutual friend of ours – retired NYPD Chief of Homicide and proud Irish American, Brian McCabe, who kindly made this episode possible.  When I started this podcast I had a list of ‘dream guests’ and Damien Dempsey was one of them - so I am beyond grateful that I got to have him on In this episode Damien speaks honestly about the shame and guilt we have been forced to feel as a Nation, His respect for the Irish that travelled the world and set down a framework for future generations and the importance of spirituality, of travelling the world and how music can help us through life.I really got so much from this conversation with Damo and I hope you find some comfort and inspiration from his message. Support the showPlease rate & review wherever you listen and if you would like to support the Podcast you can at buymeacoffee.comNavigating New York is proudly sponsored by Irish owned Therapie Clinic. On this episode of Navigating New York I speak to Freya Drohan, Executive Fashion Director at The Daily Front Row. Freya is from Malahide in Dublin and has been living in New York for 7 Years. After graduating with a degree in Journalism, Freya moved to New York with the dream of becoming a fashion journalist. Freya is now a  Director at one of the most prestigious and respected digital and print Fashion Magazines in the Industry. Earlier this year the Irish Independent listed her as one of "17 Irish people killing it on the world stage"  Freya is refreshingly honest about the hard work and determination it has taken to get to where she is today, as well as the realities of working at A List Fashion events, how fashion marketing has changed the industry, and how important it is to get your foot in the door.Freya’s passion for what she does and her love for New York City really makes her the perfect guest for this podcast.  Although her job is incredibly demanding and the fashion industry moves at a pace like no other, Freya acknowledges that she is doing what she once dreamed of doing.  One thing she said that really stood out to me was “its hard work – but we all have the ability to work hard” We chat about the grind and hustle it takes to "make it" in New York, the importance of having good people around you, what makes New York so special - and Freya nailed my newest topic “Life Hacks for living in NYC!” I hope you get as much from this conversation as I did!Support the showPlease rate & review wherever you listen and if you would like to support the Podcast you can at buymeacoffee.comNavigating New York is proudly sponsored by Irish owned Therapie Clinic. Happy St Patrick’s week! It is of course St Patrick’s day this Thursday and in honor of that this weeks episode is with two amazing women who are involved with a great organization in NY called Sober St. Patrick’s day. Today I chat to Executive Director of Sober St Patrick’s Day, Tami Ellen McLaughin and Board Member Elizabeth Stack. who is also the Executive Director of The Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany. The ladies tell me what Sober St. Patrick's day is all about and everything going on with the group this Thursday in New York (and all year round!). We chat about the stereotype we as Irish people face globally and how although it is great to enjoy and celebrate St Patrick's Day – it is also important that we try not to feed in to the stereotype of being a Nation who’s culture revolves around alcohol. I really admire this group for creating a space to enjoy our Irish Culture and Heritage in a way that ensures St. Patrick’s Day is not seen as just an excuse for everyone to wear green and get drunk. What I particularly admire is that it's not a group that is anti-alcohol, but that it creates space to celebrate in an alternative way. You can find out everything you need to know about Sober St Patrick's day by visiting their website www.soberstpatricksday.org or by following them on twitter @soberstpatsday and see how you can get involved with them to march in the parade, attend their post –parade party or join the celebrations virtually. On this week’s Episode I chat to Mickey Coleman, a well-known &respected Tyrone man living in New York for 10 years. Mickey has two All Ireland Football Medals with Tyrone from 2003 and 2005, and is still very involved in the GAA here in New York with his club. Rockland. When he moved to New York Mickey met his now wife Erin, and the pair have two gorgeous young sons. Mickey and Erin are both musicians and Erin runs her own School of Irish Music & Arts. On top of all of that, Mickey owns his own construction company Shoreline Builders and has navigated his journey in New York very impressively. However, just 5 months ago everything changed for Mickey when he suffered what’s known as a widow maker heart attack, a form of heart attack with only a 6% survival rate .At just 41 years of age and a very fit and healthy father of 2,  the heart attack completely changed Mickey's approach to life.We chat about what Mickey calls a spiritual awakening, and a new approach to life that encompasses 3 main areas of wellness, physical, mental and spiritual. Mickey’s recovery and heart functionality has stumped his doctors and he tells me why he thinks a plant based diet is medicine for the body.  Mickey and Erin have set up an Instagram page called @heartyplantbasedfood which is an account full of food recipes they believe will change your Health & Wellbeing. We chat about all of this but not before I get Mickey’s predictions on the All-Ireland Final this Saturday between Tyrone and Mayo!I hope you enjoy!Links:https://www.instagram.com/heartyplantbasedfood/https://www.facebook.com/ErinLoughranSchoolofIrishMusicandArtshttps://www.shorelinenyc.com/Support the showPlease rate & review wherever you listen and if you would like to support the Podcast you can at buymeacoffee.comNavigating New York is proudly sponsored by Irish owned Therapie Clinic. On this week's Episode I chat to Aisling Daly, a County Offaly woman who has been living in New York for 8 years. This episode touches on two big areas of interest for many of my lovely podcast listeners: women working in the Construction Industry & ladies Gaelic Football & Camogie in NYC. Aisling and I discuss how she Navigated her career path in New York and the great opportunities there are here for women working in Construction. Aisling explains the importance of being open minded and determined when starting out in the construction world and the variety of roles that are out there! We also talk about Aisling's passion for Gaelic games and Camogie and the trojan work she has put in over the years to develop Camogie in NY. Aisling coaches St Brigid's junior football team and has been heavily involved with the New York development squads– coaching young girls from under 7 right up to  youth development teams that have travelled around the US playing Camogie. Aisling has been growing the game from grass roots level right up to forming her own club, Annie Moore's in 2018. Annie Moore's is team of mostly American born players and ladies who have never played the sport before. Fast forward to just a few weeks ago, Annie Moore's made history and  won the New York League against an impressive Liberty Gaels side – another strong club formed in NY in 2015. After their historic NY League win, this novel team went on to win their first ever North American Intermediate title in Boston last Sunday.Aisling is a woman who likes to keep fit and healthy, however in 2018 she was hit with a rare illness that left her having to slow down on all fronts. After feeling very unwell, spending time in hospital and receiving surgery, Aisling learned that she had a spontaneous CSF leak in her spine. Her ability to work, coach and train like she had been was completely changed and her condition still effects her now, 3 years later. We reflect on the importance of self care, having good people around you, and taking life (and the GAA!) with a pinch of salt. I hope you enjoy! Support the showPlease rate & review wherever you listen and if you would like to support the Podcast you can at buymeacoffee.comNavigating New York is proudly sponsored by Irish owned Therapie Clinic. On this week’s episode I chat to Colin Broderick, a Northern Irish author, filmmaker and playwright living in New York City. Colin is a man I have wanted on the Podcast since I started Navigating New York, his work has had a profound effect on me personally and I was honored to have had this chat with him.Just 14 years ago, Colin was nearing the end of the road. Lost in the depths of alcohol addiction Colin found himself in the unfortunate position of being completely down and out in New York. From spending time in Jail to asking strangers for dollars around Time Square to fuel his alcohol addiction – Colin describes in this episode the moment his life changed, when he was either going to end his life, or try to recover. And recover he has; today Colin has written 4 books, ‘Orangutan’ ‘That’s That’ ‘The Writing Irish of New York’ and ‘Church End’. He has written and directed 2 incredible feature films “Emerald City” and “A Bend in the River” and on the morning of our recording,  "A Bend in the River" had just received 2 IFTA Nominations. What I admire most about Colin is his honesty, he never sugar coats how bad things got for him and that makes his journey to where he is now even more brilliant. No one has navigated New York quite like this man and I hope through this Episode and by checking out Colin's work you will be inspired too. . You can check out all of Colin's books and information about his films at colinbroderick.com and I very much encourage you to do so - you won't regret it! Support the showPlease rate & review wherever you listen and if you would like to support the Podcast you can at buymeacoffee.comNavigating New York is proudly sponsored by Irish owned Therapie Clinic.
