Description

minority support group is a podcast dedicated to creating a safe space for people who may not have always felt like they belong somewhere. sometimes, it’s hard to find your place. maybe you’re like us, and you’ve felt like you’re too *insert race here* for your white friends, but that you’re too white for your *insert race here* friends. we’ve been navigating that world our entire lives, and after about 25 years, we realized something — it’s time tor us to carve out a space for ourselves and invite others into it. we’re passionate about telling and hearing stories, and that’s exactly what we plan on doing with our podcast. every week, we’ll delve into a topic that we have experience with (identity crises, going through high school as a minority, being the only person of color in a group of friends, being women in the STEM fields, how the BLM movement changed us, etc.), and we’ll share what we’ve been through, what we’ve learned, and even what we’ve unlearned. and we encourage all of you to do the same. listen, learn, and share. we want to hear your thoughts and your experiences, because no two people’s are the same. don’t let the name fool you. our podcast may be called “minority” support group, but it is a community dedicated to anyone who wants to join. that means whether you yourself are a minority (and keep in mind, we aren’t limiting the definition of minority solely to race — there are so many different kinds of people out there!), you consider yourself an ally, or you simply want to learn a little bit more about the minority experience, you are more than welcome! we promise there’s a place for you here. come along with us on this journey. join the minority support group.

SURPRISE! we said season one would have ten episodes... but we couldn't leave you yet, so we're releasing one more! a little bonus content. this week we're answering listeners' questions, and topics range from how to talk to your parents about racial injustices to favorite bubble tea flavors. it's all over the place, we'll be honest, but we had SO MUCH fun recording it and we think you'll have just as much fun listening. so pull up a chair and join the support group for one last time this sea...
want to know a secret? we think this might be our favorite episode so far. this week we're shifting the attention to the listeners. we're opening up the conversation and using our platform to share others' stories and experiences. we received so many incredible submissions of our listeners' thoughts, opinions, and personal experiences, that we wanted to dedicate an entire episode to just them. of course, we throw in a little of our signature commentary between stories, but we keep it focused ...
dating as a minority

dating as a minority

2021-03-2945:29

this week we're getting really personal. we're talking all about dating; exes, apps, family expectations, and more. we're discussing ethnicity filters on dating apps - yes, you can quite literally eliminate an enter ethnicity of humans from the catalogue of potential dates you swipe through - and whether there is an actual case to be made for them. we're breaking down family expectations and how they've evolved through the past few generations. AND we're sharing awkward and extremely cri...
45% of american workers experienced discrimination and/or harassment in the past year... but only 55% of workplaces have diversity and inclusion policies in place. it's never easy being the only minority in a room, but being one of the only minorities in your place of work comes with its own separate hurdles. from being profiled, to being stereotyped, to being treated differently based on your gender and/or ethnicity, there is no shortage of topics to be discussed with this subject. we've nar...
what counts as covert and what counts as overt when it comes to racism? we're breaking both down in this episode, as well as sharing some of our worst experiences with racism, how we tried to combat them, and what we've learned. so throw in those headphones and join us for another episode full of information AND vulnerability.minority support group stands with the asian-american community. hate crimes against the AAPI community have skyrocketed recently, but have received little to no media c...

college as a minority

2021-03-0845:04

if we were to say "stereotypical american college," you would probably picture something pretty similar to the university of missouri. that's where we went to college - and that's where we met! this week we're diving back into our experiences there, including discussing and dissecting the nationally and internationally covered protests of 2015-2016. this episode has plenty of informational content, reflection, and personal stories. it's a good one, we swear. join us for the support group and ...

microaggressions

2021-03-0145:13

this week we're talking about microaggressions, something that is close to a daily occurrence for us. in this episode, we dive into different forms and themes of racial microaggressions as well as our own experiences with them. spoiler alert: microaggressions are confusing! it's hard being able to determine what is microaggressive behavior sometimes, and we're still trying to figure that out for ourselves. so join us for the support group this week and take a deep dive into some definit...
school as a minority

school as a minority

2021-02-2252:30

this week we're talking about school... baby. we talk about our experiences from kindergarten through high school. trying to fit in when you constantly stand out is an uncomfortable challenge. we call out injustices we've seen going through the american school system as both immigrants and minorities, and dive into the confining and difficult events that helped shaped us.
stereotypes

stereotypes

2021-02-1547:29

this week we're talking about stereotypes, both in pop culture and in our personal lives. we rant about TV shows and their racist tropes, stereotypes we have both been subject to, and more. we're also debunking the idea that there is a such thing as a "good stereotype," because we've realized, regardless of how you mean it, a stereotype still reduces a multi-faceted person down to one singular characteristic defined by their appearance.
identity crises

identity crises

2021-02-0834:13

this week we’re talking about identity crises. we’ve had a lot over the years. ignoring and/or denying our cultures to try and fit in with the people around us, changing our appearances however we could to keep ourselves from looking more different than we already did, even adopting more ‘normal’ names. it’s been a rollercoaster, and we’ll be honest, we still don’t know exactly who we are, but we’re trying to get there.
