Description

The stories behind the music on Eight Threads, the newest album by Minneapolis-based progressive folk trio Sprig of That. A ten part series of short episodes inspired by the popular Song Exploder, Eight Threads: Unraveled will feature the album's eight commissioned composers as they explain their pieces, in their own words. To learn more about Sprig of That, Eight Threads, or any of the collaborators, go to: https://www.sprigofthat.com/eight-threads. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

For anyone who's gotten this far, we thought it might be fun to share some of our thoughts about this project we've been working on for over two years. Thank you to everyone involved in what has been a sprawling project for us, and thank you to anyone who's listened this far. We hope you enjoy!
Today's episode features Adam Conrad Ferguson (our eighth and final composer!!). Though Adam is an accomplished composer of instrumental music, he decided to stretch himself for this project and do something he'd never done: instead of giving us a score with notes to play, he'd give us a set of instructions to interpret (click here to see the score). Each performance, distinct from all others, would be its own version of "8 'Structures'".  Hear the piece at the end of the episode, or buy/stream here. To keep up with Adam, check out his website, or follow him on Instagram.
Today's episode features drummer Tarek Abelqader. Tarek is a sensitive and nuanced drummer, and he brings the perspective he gained supporting so many varied musicians from behind the drum kit to his composition for us, "End of the Day." Hear the piece at the end of the episode, or buy/stream here. To keep up with Tarek, check out his Bandcamp site, or follow his projects (Tarek has seemingly played with every band in the Cities; for the sake of this box's character limit, we chose what seem to be two of the more active ones) Purple Funk Metropolis and Dr. Good and the Daily Tribune.
Today's episode features composer Erika Malpass. Born and raised in Colorado, Erika's emotive music is heavily influenced by nature and the seasons; she brings the stillness of the first snowfall to her composition for us, "tentative breathe, a moment." Hear the piece at the end of the episode, or buy/stream here. To keep up with Erika, check out her website, or follow her on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Today's episode features Yigitcan Eryaman. Yigitcan is a guitar/composer (who's side gig is being a mechanical engineer/professor at the U of M) who brings a very particular perspective to all his compositions, including the one he did for us, "Adalet." Hear the piece at the end of the episode, or buy/stream here.
Today's episode features cellist and composer Michelle Kinney. An avid improviser, Michelle's piece forced us to explore group improvisation in a way we had not done before as a group for her composition, "One Billion Animals."Hear the piece at the end of the episode, or buy/stream here. To learn more about Michelle and keep up with everything  she's  up to, visit her website.
This week's episode features Kashimana Ahua. A prodigious performer, composer, and all around artist, Kashimana's music is driven by her voice, which she uses to drive every stage of her music making. We are lucky to be able to feature her as a performer on Eight Threads, singing her composition for us, "The Only One."  Hear the song at the end of the episode, or buy/stream here. To learn more about Kashimana and keep up with the many things she's always up to, visit her website, visit her Bandcamp site, or follow her on social media: Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
This week's episode features percussionist/composer Zack Baltich. A rock drummer at heart who now plays and writes nuanced solo percussion music, Zack pulled from all kinds of influences for "Thorough Ghost (other ppl)." Hear the piece at the end of the episode, or buy/stream here. To learn more about Zack, visit his website, or follow him on  Facebook, Instagram, or Youtube.
This week's episode features composer Asuka Kakitani. An accomplished composer who cut her compositional teeth writing for big band, Asuka brought a whole range of subtle colors out of Sprig in her piece "The Tree in Front of My House." Hear the piece at the end of the episode, or buy/stream here. To learn more about Asuka, visit her website, or follow her on Instagram or Twitter.
