Joining me today is Lorren Harrison, The Secret Self-Help Coach.Lorren helps highly passionate and caring professionals to create alignment between the work that they do and their natural strengths. Her work as a coach is driven by her personal experiences of feeling lost, overwhelmed, and unable to find a career that truly nourished her heart and soul.  Like so many introverts, it’s taken Lorren time to really understand how her personality shapes her emotions and behaviours. Her preference for solitude and quiet reflection has in the past led to feelings of low self-esteem and self-worth because these behaviours were at odds with societal behaviours.During our conversation, you’ll learn how Lorren’s journey into coaching has helped to increase her self-awareness of the subtle but important ways in which different environments impacts her energy levels.  Indeed, the coaching and NLP strategies that she’s integrated into her life and work have given her the confidence to build firm boundaries that protect her energy levels. You’ll also discover how Lorren has slowly but surely found her coaching niche, something that many coaches, both newly qualified and experienced can struggle with. Her niche being driven as much by the personality of her clients as much as their age, job or location. As a free spirit, Lorren has a lust for travel and discovering new places and people so we have some fun towards the end of our chat discussing her newly acquired campervan and how she may use it to take her coaching services on the road. Perhaps to a town near you! While there are many life and career coaches in the world, every single one brings a unique set of attributes to their work. This is very much the case with Lorren so it was a delight to offer her a platform to tell her story and showcase her talents. If you’re a coach, I’m sure many aspects of our conversation will resonate with you.Connect with LorrenLinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/lorren-h-4b28311aa/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/secretselfhelpcoach/Lorren's Book RecommendationThe Chimp Paradox - Dr. Steve Peters Connect with AlexWebsite: https://www.ownyourquiet.comLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexcreid/Email:  alex@ownyourquiet.com

In the first of my full solo episodes, I return to examine the roots of the podcast that I chose to call “Own Your Quiet”. Isn't it about time you let your quiet do the talking?  It's a slightly provocative question but when that gets to the heart of why I started this podcast.  It's provocative because it asks us to decide whether our current behaviours are consistent with our needs. It’s a question that many introverts can relate to because we gravitate towards quiet places. That’s where we get energised, inspired, and productive. During this episode I focus on the relationship between quietness and leadership. I do so because in the media, and to an extent the business world, there is a lingering stereotype that successful leaders have to be highly vocal, opinionated, and a little larger than life.Yet, as a I highlight there are no shortage of examples of quiet leaders, some of whom have been recognised by the likes of Susan Cain and Jim Collins. What does it really mean to “let your quiet do the talking?”  I share my own thoughts towards the end of the episode but I'm really interested to hear yours so please get in touch via one of the methods below. Alex is joined by Daniel PaiceDaniel is a blogger, copywriter, mental health and wellbeing consultant, and most recently, an author.Daniel started his blog called “The Sanity Mentality” as a means of sharing the mental health challenges that he’s faced in his own life, while at the same time helping to reduce the stigmas that are still associated with mental health. As he’s increased his self-awareness of how fluid and fragile our mental health can be, he’s come to appreciate the role that introversion plays in determining how, where and when he naturally gets energised and de-energised. While introversion in itself isn’t a predictor of the quality of our mental health, when we continually force ourselves to behave in ways that are in opposition to it, it can very often lead to feelings of low self-esteem, anxiety and even depression. In practical terms, this means that the environments we are spending most of our time in, are creating a constant state of over-stimulation in our brain.  Without making a priority of finding the time to let our brain recover in a quiet low stimulus environment, and also sleep well consistently, we are more likely to experience the aforementioned negative emotions. During our discussion, Daniel shares his story of how and when he first started to notice the corrosive effects of anxiety and panic attacks creeping up on him and take a toll on his health and wellbeing. He also reveals how positive reactions and feedback to his blog provided the catalyst to become a freelance writer in the health and wellbeing sector.  His first book called “Prevailed Hope” will be published in digital format on October 12th 2021.  It’s a book of poems that provide a deep, raw, and honest reflection of mental health and some of life's toughest emotions based on Daniel’s own experiences.  You can pre-order the book via the link below.Connect with DanLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-paice-23b502203 Blog: https://thesanitymentality.wordpress.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanJWrites?s=09Pre-Order/Order Prevailed Hope: https://amzn.to/3CUmnhj Connect with AlexWebsite: https://www.ownyourquiet.comLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexcreid/Email:  alex@owmyourquiet.com
Alex is joined by Claire Thomas Hawnt Claire works as an independent career coach helping mid to senior level introverts get in touch with their inner change maker, unlock their power and achieve career success through 1:1 coaching.Having worked for many years as an HR Professional in the public sector, Claire used the COVID driven lockdowns as an opportunity to make the leap and turn her passion for coaching into a business. One that has enabled her to create a much healthier and fulfilling work-life balance. Freed of the obligation to commute to an open plan office that she struggled to be productive in, Claire now has more freedom to choose when and for how long she works, meaning she can build her business around the needs of her three children and husband. Her success in making this transition is one that many other introvert professionals aspire to, so I was delighted when Claire asked to guest on my podcast.  Our conversation focuses on exactly how introvert professionals can create their ideal workday. One that affords them the opportunity to work in an environment that is best suited to them, and at times when they are most naturally energised and productive.  Whether you are self-employed or in employment, I strongly believe that if you’re not doing so already, you should be proactively thinking about how to achieve this outcome. While it may feel idealistic and unachievable, creating your ideal workday is within your grasp.  It starts with completing a simple 2 step exercise which Claire reveals during our conversation. Alex is joined by Daisy SimonisDaisy’s passion is teaching introverts how to boost their people skills without changing who they are so they can advance their careers. Through her hugely popular newsletter, LinkedIn posts, and webinars she helps members of her tribe to overcome their feelings of overwhelm, exhaustion, anxiety and low self-esteem through developing strategies that enable them to confidently speak up in meetings, making conversation, and say "no" without regret. Daisy is driven by the recognition that many introverts feel under-valued and misunderstood in their workplaces because they are perceived as the quiet ones who sit in the corner and chose to avoid participating in the superficial office chit chat.  At the heart of Daisy’s approach to the work she does is her understanding that they key to building a successful career as an introvert is energy management. This means knowing your mental threshold for social stimulation and creating working practices that enable you to remain mentally energised. During our conversation Daisy shares how reading Susan Cain’s highly acclaimed book “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a world that can’t stop talking” helped her find the confidence to move from being a socially awkward teenager to an empowered communicator who is able to initiate and develop conversations with anyone, anywhere. We also explore one of the main reasons why so many introverts are perceived as being quiet. That being the fact that we “think to understand” rather than “speak to understand”.  “Thinking to understand” means we need time to process what we are seeing and hearing before we respond. This can be as short as several seconds to as long as several minutes. This is why we find “small talk” such a challenge.  Our brains aren’t wired to produce immediate verbal responses.  As Daisy highlights, with the right support and the right strategies, introverts can develop a highly successful career that is built around their natural thinking styles and communication strengths.  Whether you see yourself as more introverted or extroverted, I’m sure you’ll takeaway some valuable insights that enable you to improve the quality of your everyday conversations and relationships inside and outside the workplace. Connect with DaisyLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daisysimonis/Website: www.empoweredintroverts.comDaisy's Book Recommendations“Sorry I’m late, I didn’t want to come” – Jessica Pan“The Courage to be disliked” - Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake KogaConnect with AlexWebsite: https://www.ownyourquiet.comLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexcreid/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OwnYourQuietApply to Work With Me 121:
Alex is joined by Ben James.Ben’s passion is inspiring introvert business owners to build their confidence in selling themselves so they can achieve greater levels of financial and emotional freedom for themselves and their families. Ben is a qualified chiropractor who has built his own successful practice while also moving into sales roles working for some of the worlds leading medical device manufacturers including Smith & Nephew & ICU Medical. As with many introverts, selling didn’t come naturally to Ben. However, over time, and with lots of practice, he learned to use his natural communication strengths of observation, listening and empathy to develop very successful relationships with his clients. Combining his experiences as a small business owner and salesperson, Ben is now helping other introvert business owners to overcome the deeply embedded mental barriers that are holding them back from growing their business. These are challenges that I’ve personally experienced which is why I was keen to invite Ben onto my podcast so I could learn more about his own journey to becoming a successful salesperson.During our conversation we discuss the power of reframing the sales process from the traditional perception of hustle and persuasion to serving via education. We also address how to reduce the strong emotions that are connected with rejection, a inevitable part of selling, and how to successfully transition online connections and introductions into virtual and physical face to face sales conversations. Whether you realise it or not, you are in the business of selling, and while it’s understandable that this may provoke some anxiety, Ben’s story of conquering his own fears and playing to his strengths demonstrates that all introverts can succeed in selling themselves.Connect with BenLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/benstephenjames/Connect with AlexWebsite: https://www.ownyourquiet.comLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexcreid/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OwnYourQuietApply to Work With Me 121:

He attended Mississippi State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2011.He decided that after finding ways to creatively overcome many challenges he experienced as an introvert including bullying, addiction, negative thinking, and low self-esteem, that he would help as many introverts as possible to overcome their issues and live their best lives.Professionally, he’s worked as a corporate trainer, teacher, team leader, and youth counsellor, supporting companies and organizations from across the United States and internationally, both in person and virtually.I first connected with Jay earlier in 2021 and we quickly discovered that while our backgrounds and life journeys are quite different, we share a common passion for helping introvert professionals.  Our conversation centres on Jay’s journey to discovering the niche that he best placed to serve, the lessons he’s learned through this journey and how he uses these lessons to help other introverts. One of the biggest lessons he’s learned is the value of Emotional Intelligence or EI in determining career success, so we explore what it really is, and the system he’s created to help his clients to increase their self-awareness of the different types of emotions they are experiencing, how they influence their behaviours, and how to plan ahead to successfully manage them as they arise.Connect with JayWebsite: http://www.introvertedyou.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jaybrianspeaks1Email: info@jaybrianspeaks.com Jay's Podcast: The Meaning of Introvert PodcastJay's BookJay's book called "Smart Emotions. Alex is joined by Gary Searle. Gary is the Founder of United by Success, a business focused on helping people to build their dream business without sacrificing their health, well-being and personal life. Prior to starting his current business, Gary worked as an independent business consultant. However, he realised that this role wasn’t giving him the work life balance and energy that he craved, so he pivoted to coaching business owners instead. Our conversation centres on a theme that we both feel merits regular discussion and promotion. That being how introverts can embrace their introversion and strategically use it as their super power in the workplace and business world. Why is this subject so worthy of discussion? The simple reason is that many talented business owners and professionals struggle on a daily basis to bring the best version of themselves to their workplace. The workplaces that support the knowledge economy aren’t typically conducive to bringing the best out of introverts. Open plan offices that promote noise and lots of social interactions are at odds with the preferences of many introverts.Yet, now, more than ever, the natural strengths of quiet observation, reflection and analysis are needed in workplaces of all sizes.  These are leadership qualities that help us to make sense of an increasingly complex and confusing world. However, as I know from my own lived experiences as an introvert, introverts don’t generally shout about our natural strengths and demand that others recognise them. Therefore, it can often take the support of a coach to help the introvert deepen their awareness of the role that their introversion is playing in their life, and develop strategies to use it to enhance their productivity and wellbeing.Connect With Gary LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gary-searle-unitedbysuccess/Gary's Book Recommendation The Prosperous Coach - Steve Chandler & Rich Litvin Connect With MeWebsite: https://www.ownyourquiet.comLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexcreid/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OwnYourQuietApply to Work With Me 121:

This recognising that your website is not just the face of your business but also your personal brand. Melanie works as a Career Coach and Mentor, helping unfulfilled midlife professionals working in financial services tackle overwhelm and create a work life balance that enables them to feel energised, empowered and focused.Melanie holds a special place in my heart because she is the person who I reached out to when I needed a coach to help me reconnect with my true purpose in life, and provide me with the clarity and confidence to reach out and grab it.I was excited to chat to Melanie on my podcast because through her actions she has demonstrated how to make the transition from many years working in corporate world to become a successful coach.Melanie was keen to discuss how finding and developing your tribe is the key to success as a coach and small business owner so that’s the theme for this episode. When we strip away all of the buzz words and strategies, marketing is really nothing more than building relationships with people that we are motivated and proud to serve. When we know what a member of our tribe looks like and where we can find them, our life becomes a lot easier as we can then get down to connecting and building relationships with them.Melanie shares some great insights on how she and you can build a tribe of loyal followers and clients so this is an episode that's well worth listening too.
