Send us a Text Message. When the dust settled after the terrifying collapse of the World Trade Center, NYPD beat cop turned ATF Deputy Assistant Director Peter J. Forcelli found himself in a fight for his life, both physically and mentally. Join me as I, Marlene McConnell sit down with Peter to unpack his harrowing experiences from the front lines of law enforcement, including his vivid survival story from September 11th and the unspoken mental health battles that followed. His gripping narrative not only sheds light on the personal costs of service but also opens up a much-needed conversation on the psychological toll that comes with the badge. The scars of trauma often lie hidden beneath the surface, but as Peter shares, conquering the nightmares of PTSD begins with breaking the silence. In a profession where mental fortitude is a given, we unravel the evolution of how admitting to mental struggles in law enforcement is no longer a sign of weakness, but a courageous step towards healing. The episode journeys through Peter's personal coping strategies, offering hope and practical advice for those silently struggling and a call to action for systemic change within the ranks of first responders. Finally, we tread into the depths of government accountability with Peter as he gives us an insider's perspective on his whistleblower experience during Operation Fast and Furious. His story is a powerful reminder of the weight of the oath to serve and protect the Constitution and the American people, challenging leadership to own their mistakes for the betterment of all. Shedding light on the complexities and consequences of bureaucratic mismanagement, Peter's narrative is a testament to the resolve of those who dare to speak truth to power and the resilience of the human spirit when faced with life's unexpected battles. It has been my pleasure to have Peter join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode. If you wish to connect with Peter, check out his website and social media links below. Website:  https://www.peterjforcelli.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/peter-j-forcelli-26597122/ Please, head to Amazon, Takealot or Audible at the link and get your copy of my E-book, paperback book or audiobook edition, of Ray of Light, and please leave me a rating and review. Send us a Text Message. In this week's episode, I am delighted to welcome Tate Barley to the podcast who joins me from North Carolina, United States. Tate carried the burden of shame for years, stemming from poverty, addiction, and the struggle of being a closeted gay man. Through Alcoholics Anonymous, he found sobriety and now seeks to inspire others by sharing his transformative journey. His memoir, unveils his troubled relationship with his father and his path to overcoming shame and a scarcity mindset. Tate reflects on his challenging childhood from rural North Carolina to poverty in Central Florida, and their move to 1970s Houston. He details his battle with repressed sexuality and escalating drinking, leading to rock bottom. Tate's story resonates as he pursues self-acceptance and inner peace. A Houston-based attorney, speaker, author, and educator, Tate lives with his husband, Anson, and their dog, Emerson.Tate Barkley grew up in the small towns of North Carolina, where money was tight, dreams seldom came true, and family secrets were kept hidden. His Grandmother’s house was a sanctuary where he felt loved—and her big Sunday dinners nourished his stomach and his soul. After his parents divorced, he discovered his mother’s new boyfriend, and eventual husband, was his biological father— a charming dreamer who would disappear for months at a time, leaving his family to fend for themselves. As a teen, Tate began drinking. His father was a heavy drinker, and Tate was always looking for ways to connect with him, for a way to hold on to the moment before he slipped away again. Drinking gave Tate a sense of calm, and it numbed him from the love he was missing in his life. After years of drinking, losing his law practice, and hitting rock bottom he realized he either needed to take responsibility and change—or he’d end up dead. This is a Southern boy’s story of surviving in a good ole boys’ world. Tate fought his way back, ended a life built on lies, and forged a path to accept his true self—with or without his father’s love.It has been my pleasure to have Tate join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode. Enjoy the episode, and a special thank you to my listeners for joining me on this journey. If you wish to connect with Tate, check out his website and social media links below. Website: http://tatebarkley.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/barkley.tateInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/barkley.tate/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@tatebarkley3829LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-tate-barkley-3014bb14/Please, head to Amazon, Takealot or Audible at the link and get your copy of my E-book, paperback book or audiobook edition, of Ray of Light, and please leave me a rating and review. Send us a Text Message.I am excited to welcome Heulwen Marina Carrier to the podcast who joins me from Edinburgh, Scotland. Marina lived through early trauma as an illegitimate unwanted child, born as a girl, then sexually abused by her step-father up to the age of 9 when she was left as dead. She was baptized as a baby, so despite her suffering, she passed to Grammar School and through God’s provision was enabled to pass sufficient exams at 16, then at 18, to train as a teacher. Her career was led by Providential care and as she asked questions, and sought answers through courses, she grew in wisdom and experience of enabling learning even with those deemed to have learning difficulties. Most of her shifts of direction followed necessity,  or invitations – such as the one that offered her a 3-year Student-ship to do a Ph.D. when she was married and had an adopted child!!! She taught all ages and abilities in her years in education and finished her work as Acting Head of Department of In-Service Education of Teachers. She chose to step sideways into support of students but then had to recognize her mental exhaustion – and her own needs. She had lived in denial of her human needs for years – especially since her husband’s betrayal.  And now in despair, she heard her name when crying on the bed. And she was given early retirement. So for 30 years after God called her back to the Church, she was led through ‘the dark night of the soul’, finding the mystery of the Inner World – and what it means to live in ‘Spirit and in Truth’. She learned the wonder of humility and the mystery of giving all her burdens to Christ…. Yet living for Him and by Him.  Gradually her suffering of her early years in human terms became revealed and unraveled as she needed to embrace her faith and allow change in her heart and live for Love. With a greater understanding of the effects of trauma and PTSD, healing in faith brought compassion and will to bless and serve others who bore heavy burdens of lovelessness and shame. It has been my pleasure to have Marina join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode. Enjoy the episode, and a special thank you to my listeners for joining me on this journey. If you wish to connect with Marina, check out his website and social media links below. Website: https://www.overcoming.live/Facebook: https://facebook.com/heulwenmarina/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChxk634erDwRy8Aea2fwhdgPlease, head to Amazon or Takealot at the link and get your copy of my E-book or paperback book edition, Ray of Light, and please leave me a rating and review. Send us a Text Message. In this week's episode, I am delighted to welcome Avgi Sakatopoulou and Ann Pelligrini to the podcast. Avgi and Ann, psychoanalysts and professors at NYU, tackle one of the most hot-button cultural/health issues raging in the United States of America—how one forms their gender identity—in a new book, GENDER WITHOUT IDENTITY.The award-winning psychoanalysts challenge the argument widely embraced by rights activists and members of the LGBTQ+ community that gender identity is innate and immutable. Dismissing the notion of core gender identity as simplistic, problematic, and potentially harmful to LGBTQ+ people, the authors propose instead that gender is something we all acquire—through our ongoing development, family history, and life experiences, which sometimes include trauma.      AVGI SAKETOPOULOU (she/her) trained as clinical psychologist in New York after emigrating from Greece and Cyprus, and subsequently completed training as a psychoanalyst at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, where she currently teaches. She also serves on the faculty of the William Alanson White Institute, the Stephen Mitchell Relational Center, and the National Institute for Psychotherapies, where she offers courses on psychosexuality and gender. Her interview on psychoanalysis is on the collection of the Freud Museum in Vienna and she is the 2022 recipient of the Scholarship Award from the American Psychological Association’s Division of Psychoanalysis.  Dr. Saketopoulou is also the author of Sexuality Beyond Consent: Risk, Race, Traumatophilia (NYU Press, 2023).ANN PELLEGRINI (they/them; she/her) is Professor of Performance Studies & Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University, teaching classes on queer theory and psychoanalysis, among other topics, as well as a psychoanalyst in private practice. They are the author/co-author of three previous books, including “You Can Tell Just by Looking” and 20 Other Myths about LGBT Life and People, co-authored with Michael Bronski and Michael Amico (Beacon Press, 2013), which was a finalist for the 2014 Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBT Non-Fiction. Dr. Pellegrini has also co-edited two anthologies and is founding co-editor of the “Sexual Cultures” series at NYU Press. It has been my honor and pleasure to have Avgi and Ann join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode. If you wish to connect with Avgi or Ann, check out his website and social media links below. Avgi SaketopoulouWebsite: https://www.avgisaketopoulou.com/Ann PellegriniLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ann-pellegrini-7030b6124/ A special thank you to my listeners for joining me on this journey. Send us a Text Message. This week, I am delighted to welcome Richard Brockman, MD to the podcast who joins me from Columbia University, United States. An intertwined tale of a boy’s world shattered by suicide and a man’s story rewritten by neuroscience.Richard Brockman, MD, is a clinical professor in the department of psychiatry at Columbia University and a visiting professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Namibia. He has been honored with the Nancy C.A. Roeske Award for medical student education by the American Psychiatric Association and with the Victor J. Teichner Visiting Scholar Award from the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry for his teaching. Also a playwright, his shows have been produced both off-Broadway and on international stages. When Brockman found his mother’s body, the simple narrative of his childhood ended. Life After Death tells the story of a boy who died and of a man who survived when the boy and the man are one and the same. It tells a very personal—yet tragically common—story of irredeemable loss. It tells the story of story itself. How story forms. How it grows. How it changes. How it can be broken. And finally, how sometimes it can be repaired. Now an expert in genetics, epigenetics, and the biology of attachment, Brockman chronicles his evolution from a child overwhelmed by trauma to a man who has struggled to reclaim his past. He lays bare the core of one who is both victim and healer. By weaving together childhood despair and clinical knowledge, Brockman shows how the shattered pieces of the self—though never the same and not without scars—can sometimes be put back together again. It has been my pleasure to have Richard join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode. Enjoy the episode, and a special thank you to my listeners for joining me on this journey. If you wish to connect with Richard, check out his website and social media links below. Website: https://www.cugmhp.org/faculty/richard-brockman-md//LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/richard-brockman-000219273/Please, head to Amazon or Takealot at the link and get your copy of my E-book or paperback book edition, Ray of Light, and please leave me a rating and review. Send us a Text Message. In this week's episode, I am delighted to welcome fellow survivor and mental health advocate Madeline Popelka to the podcast who joins me from the Bay Area in California, United States. Madeline, is a writer, trauma survivor, and mental health, and LGBTQ+ advocate. Born and raised in the Bay Area, she grew up in an Asian American household where mental health was never discussed. As a daughter of a refugee, intergenerational trauma runs through her family, and she struggled with her mental health her entire life. She thought that she was broken and damaged beyond repair, and she suffered in isolation. In her twenties, she started to experience PTSD symptoms and she didn’t know the first step in getting help. Nobody taught her how to heal, and she knew she wasn’t alone. As she began learning life lessons along my healing journey, she felt the urge to share her insights so other sufferers wouldn’t feel so isolated. In February 2020, she created a space for other trauma survivors, @HealingFromPTSD, which quickly became the largest trauma healing community on Instagram. Through healing, Madeline discovered and reconnected with parts of herself, and she cultivated a sense of internal peace and freedom that she never experienced before. Now, she is on a mission to help others do the same. Her first book, You’re Going to Be Okay, was released in September 2022.It has been my pleasure to have Madeline join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode. Enjoy the episode, and a special thank you to my listeners for joining me on this journey. If you wish to connect with Madeline, check out her website and social media links below. Website: https://www.madelinepopelka.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/healingfromptsd/Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/healingfromptsd/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/madelinepopelka/Please, head to Amazon or Takealot at the link and get your copy of my E-book or paperback book edition, Ray of Light, and please leave me a rating and review. Send us a Text Message. In this week's episode, I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Eugene Lipov and Jamie Mustard to the podcast.Dr. Lipov is a complex anesthesiologist called the "Einstein of modern anesthesiology." President Obama endorsed his discovery and innovation, the Dual Sympathetic Reset (DSR), in 2010. His research has an 85-90% success rate in reducing the effects of trauma.   Jamie Mustard is an artist, multimedia consultant, and Iconist. His passion is to teach the science and "art of obviousness" and the economics of attention, helping professionals, change agents, artists, and businesses confidently and at will make their messages, brands, and ideas stand out to their desired audiences. Working for some of the biggest brands in the world, including Nike, Adidas, Intel, and Cisco, Jamie believes that art is a way to amplify and accelerate all social change. In their recently released publication, The Invisible Machine outlines how the root of trauma can be traced to a single piece of human hardware: the stellate ganglion and how the pioneering procedure of DSR appears to treat injury to the stellate ganglion, relieving even the worst symptoms of PTSI—irritability, hypervigilance, insomnia, and more—in a 15-minute treatment.Weaving hard science with moving human stories, The Invisible Machine reveals a stark new understanding of human pain and how this groundbreaking treatment was developed. It also tells the incredible story of the unlikely team, including the doctor, an artist, Special Forces leadership, and a sheriff, who work together to change our understanding of post-traumatic stress and why it matters to society.Coming out of a global pandemic, we are emerging from one of the most traumatic times in recent history. This surprising new treatment could have profound implications for medicine, mental health, and society at large.  The implications for a better, pain-free world are astounding—and that world could be nearer than we think. It has been my pleasure to have Dr Eugene Lipov and Jamie Mustard join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode. Send us a Text Message. In this week's episode, I am thrilled to welcome the very astute Dr. Lisa Smith to the podcast, where she joins me from her office in Fort Lauderdale, United States. Dr. Lisa is an author, advocate, and professor who provides an honest perspective about solutions for mental health issues regarding the sexual assault and rape of children and teens, which is rarely addressed. She is a psychology, criminal justice, and human services professor with over 20 years of experience as a counselor, hypnotherapist, and advocate for the masses suffering from trauma and abuse.Dr. Lisa Smith is also the founder of Right2Consent.com, a sex crime reporting site. Her mission is to raise awareness, help prevent, and reduce sexual victimization (1:5 are targeted online, 1:4 girls, 1:6 boys under 18 are groomed) in America. She questions why we blame and shame vulnerable groups when they tell their stories about sexual victimization. Many are ill-prepared to fend off a sex offender when approached and don't often report the crime to parents or law enforcement. More important, these vulnerable children and teens grow up and become adults with distorted sexual identities. Most children, teens, and young adults may not know how to deter a sex offender. To help, she writes books that teach students about sexual violence. I write children's books to teach parents and children about the grooming process, give deterrence tips, and help them identify the signs of sexual violence. With her books, children are taught to be superheroes that learn to help each other bring an undetected sex offender into the light.  It has been my pleasure to have Dr. Lisa join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode. Enjoy the episode, and a special thank you to my listeners for joining me on this journey. If you wish to connect with Dr. Lisa, check out her website and social media links below. Website: https://www.right2consent.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/right2consent/Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/right2consent/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/drlisasmith/Please, head to Amazon or Takealot at the link and get your copy of my E-book or paperback book edition, Ray of Light, and please leave me a rating and review.
