The episode for reality tv stans everywhere!How many times have we referred to reality tv as a guilty pleasure? Or trash tv? Or just generally felt embarrassed admitting to our reality tv vice? Author Danielle Lindemann joins us to chat about her new book, 'True Story: What Reality TV Says About Us.' As a sociologist and reality tv fan (who teaches a course on reality tv--where do I sign up for that!?), Danielle provocatively suggests that perhaps we shouldn't brush off reality tv as our collective guilty pleasure; that instead by looking at the extremes, what is reflected back to us is a fun-house mirror indicative of ourselves.Take race for example - Did you know the long running show COPS was cancelled in the wake of George Floyd's murder? Yes, it was then picked up again by FOX (no surprise there), but for a short time, COPS couldn't exist in a post BLM world.What about the Bachelor franchise? It took 15 years for the show to cast a black Bachelorette, and then another 4 years to cast a black Bachelor (Rachel Lindsay and Matt James, respectively). Not to mention the show always follows a traditional heteronormative courtship (the roses! the proposals! the right reasons trope)! Meanwhile, we see members of the LGBTQ+ community on other reality shows, but they are still heavily produced to appeal to the male gaze.And what do we make of the greatest paradox of all--that a reality tv star actually made it to the White House!? While Trump may not have landed the Presidency from his tenure on 'The Apprentice,' it certainly didn't disqualify him. And having a platform for him and his family to be in our living rooms weekly in positions of power certainly didn't hurt.If we peel back the layers of reality tv and see exaggerated versions of our own culture, can we so easily dismiss it as nothing more than a frothy delight? Highlights (really, lowlights), include: marriage problems can be solved through daily sex (even if you don't want to), if you're unhappy that's your fault (no matter what!), and being very hydrated is a cure-all. Spoiler alert, we really, really dislike this book.Bigger discussions include Rachel Hollis adopting Tony Robbins as her persona (as if one Tony Robbins wasn't enough), her blatantly plagiarising cinematic masterpiece 'Clueless' (because plagiarizing seems to be her thing), why 'competition' needs to stop being a dirty word, and the alignment between the aspirational MLM culture and the success of the Hollis Co. Rise conferences. So much to unpack, it's a good one. And yes, we dissect every bit of that TikTok video and subsequent non-apologies. Yes, apologies plural because to the shock of no one, she had to apologize for her apology.Things get divisive when the subject of influencer and fellow mommy blogger/entrepreneur Jillian Harris comes up. She somehow finds herself roped into the Rachel Hollis drama, and we have very differing points of view on where we stand on her. Along the way we try our best to answer the bigger questions: What makes someone worthy of a follow/unfollow, how much do we expect influencers to speak up about what's happening outside their perfect little insta squares, what makes Rachel Hollis such an aspirational figure to so many (particularly in the mlm set), and can we and should we be doing better by the people whose accounts we are following? The minisode series tackles some of the stories/movies/books/tv shows I'm currently following in a snazzy roundup way-- you brush up on current pop culture all in about 20 minutes (hooray!)This week, I explore Chrissy Teigen's complicated relationship with Twitter. Why did she leave the social media app of which she's dubbed the informal 'Mayor of Twitter,' why is she back, and what does the Twitterverse think? I break it down.Colton Underwood comes out as gay on Good Morning America and reveals he has a reality show in the works with Netflix. The interview with Robin Roberts conveniently brushes past his harassment of ex Cassie Randolph as he tries to control the narrative. I found both news of the reality show and interview disappointing, and wonder when the Bachelor franchise will get it together.Prince Philip passed away at the age of 99 at his home in Windsor Castle last week. His funeral was overshadowed by the palace PR machine and the dynamics between Harry/Meghan and Kate/William. But the real story right now is Queen Elizabeth losing her rock and the person who has been by her side from the beginning. There's a lot of work to do cleaning up the Royal Family's image prior to Charles taking the reigns, but right now their sole focus seems to be positioning Kate as the glue that holds them all together.Lastly, the celebrity friendship we didn't know we needed--eternal cool girls Natasha Lyonne & Chloe Sevigny. Maybe I'm friendship starved in a COVID world but this read was my favorite profile of the week.
