Today, I interview Sonja Johansson, who lives by the motto: ‘The quality of your movement is the quality of your life’.  This is the first time that I have published a conversation in full with no edits; this is testament to the many gems of wisdom that this interview contains and to how well Sonja talks about this subject with such great articulation. I guarantee that you will enjoy this extended episode. As a movement educator specialising in a system to optimise body/mind performance called the Feldenkrais Method, Sonja lives and breathes that motto everyday. With over 20 years of expertise in neuro-motor reprogramming, she brings a unique and holistic approach to teaching Nordic Walking. This embodied approach creates conditions for positive neuro-plasticity, improved balance, coordination & agility with the fundamental skill of awareness of your body's sensations and movements. This ‘Conscious Nordic Walking’ technique aims to maintain independence, reverse the signs of ageing through complex full body patterns, build a strong cardiovascular system without jeopardising posture and vulnerable joints.Sonja's approach is deeply rooted in optimal biomechanics, ensuring that her students gain a ‘lived’ understanding of their body's skeletal structure, to optimise alignment and promote efficient gait patterns. She empowers her students to achieve safe, powerful, and effortless walking with plenty of novelty and fun in each session. Highlighting functional movement patterns that use the biotensegrity model, including the crucial role of fascia. You can find out more by visiting Sonja's website at HonestExercise.me or email her directly: Hello@HonestExercise.me Final thank you to sponsorsSupport the showIf you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by buying me a coffee! In episode 57, I interview Ginny Lunn, owner and director of Walking Women, one of the fabulous sponsors of the Walking On Air podcast. Ginny and her sister, Sara,  bought Walking Women in 2021, as they both wanted to do something meaningful post Covid and in later life. Prior to this, Ginny had had a long and successful career in the charity world; her last position was CEO of the childrens’ literacy charity, Beanstalk.  Ginny’s desire to change career at this stage of her life was a result of reevaluating what was important following a life changing event, which she has generously shared with us today and explained how walking helped her to come to terms with her experience. In this episode, I speak to Ryan Taylor.  Ryan was born in the highlands of Papua New Guinea to New Zealander parents. He moved back to New Zealand and grew up in a small town by the beach, where he developed a love of surfing and anything a bit extreme. This led to broken bones and plenty of travelling adventures. After a failed marriage, he got into skydiving to pursue a new obsession, B.A.S.E jumping. After only 6 weeks & a total of 73 jumps(do the math), he was involved in a jumping accident and given less than a 5% chance of surviving the night.  He is amazingly lucky to be alive, but had to learn how to walk, talk, breath & swallow again at the age of thirty. The following 18.5 years have been full of highs & lows which he shares with us today.. I am delighted to kick off Series 4 by interviewing British Nordic Walking National Trainer, Vicky Welsh.  Vicky is a good friend of Walking On Air having answered the question ‘what is nordic walking’ in the very first episode of this podcast, which remains the most downloaded episode of all time.  She returned for episode 35 to explain how beneficial nordic walking is for the pelvic floor; an episode that has top 10 status reflecting the importance of this topic.  Back in 2010 Vicky  set up Bristol Nordic Walking;  she organised a successful Nordic Walking festival in October 2021; she is working on a community nordic walking project in Bristol; and she has recently been raising the profile of nordic walking again by publishing a book,  Lets Walk Nordic, which has been a number one best seller on amazon in 8 categories, including walking, hiking & trekking; active outdoor pursuits; and  hiking & camping and number two in fitness through walking (second only to MM Just one thing) and number two in Sport (second only to the fishing book by mortimer &u whitehouse.  In our conversation, Vicky mentioned the positive influence of Parkrun and how it actively encourages participation from Nordic Walkers; if you would like to learn more, then do listen to episode #26 in which Sian Harris talks in detail about the experience of nordic walking parkrun.  Final thank you to sponsorsSupport the showIf you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by buying me a coffee! Warning - This episode contains graphic descriptions of injuries sustained in a serious car crash.Of all the interviews I have conducted with incredible guests for Walking On Air, this is by far the most inspirational and emotional.  It was such a privilege to speak to Simon Clark, who recently qualified as a British Nordic Walking Instructor.  In 2019, Simon was involved in a horrific car accident and sustained multiple injuries to his body and his brain.  Thanks to the Great Western Air Ambulance Team, who performed extensive and complex life saving surgery at the scene , Simon is here to talk to us today.  He was fortunate to meet two former guests on Walking On Air: Melissa Domaille was one of the physios in his rehab team, and she introduced him to Nordic Walking, before referring him on to Steve Ellis, who has helped Simon get back into the mountains.   Simon describes Nordic Walking as ‘a gamechanger’ in his recovery progress and he has kindly agreed to speak about his experiences today, in the hope that it will inspire others, firstly, to push themselves to defy the odds and secondly, to consider donating to the Great Western Air Ambulance Team.  To Donate, please visit the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity. To listen to episodes referenced in this interview:Osteoporosis and Nordic Walking with Melissa DomailleAltitude, Adventure & Nordic Walking Expeditions with Steve EllisBehind the Scenes of Walking On Air with Mary Tweed & Steve EllisFind An Instructor Near Youhttps://britishnordicwalking.org.uk/apps/store-locatorIf you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by Final thank you to sponsorsSupport the showIf you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by buying me a coffee! In episode 43, I am discussing a very relevant topic to the times that we are living in, namely Long Covid..  Today I am joined by Ann, who caught Covid in September 2021 while working as a teaching assistant supporting primary school children with additional needs.  Due to underlying asthma, she became very ill with covid, which led to pneumonia and a three week stint in hospital, including a week in  ITU.  On leaving hospital, Ann struggled just to walk around her house, never mind down the road, as the fatigue was exhausting  and she found it difficult to breathe. By Christmas she’d had enough and decided to take back control of her health. In episode 40, I’m talking to Catrin, who set up Nordicymru, instructing Nordic Walking in South West Wales in January 2022.  Like many people the Covid pandemic made Catrin and her family rethink their values and particularly what they wanted from life.  Catrin has been on an amazing journey in the last two years, which has resulted in her training to become a Nordic Walking Instructor.  In our conversation, we discuss the importance of a healthy work-life balance and the benefits of taking the plunge to shake up the status quo.To Find out more about Nordic Cymru:Website: www.nordicymru.com  Email : www.nordicymru@outlook.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Nordicymru-111355134737854Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nordicymru/If you want to follow Catrin's camper van adventures then please visit Silver Nugget Adventure on YouTube, or on Instagram or on Facebook.  Catrin mentioned Karen Ingram, who trained her to be a British Nordic Walking Instructor.  Karen was an early guest on Walking On Air, who spoke very inspirationally about how Nordic Walking can help to relieve Back Pain.  Find An Instructorhttps://britishnordicwalking.org.uk/apps/store-locatorIf you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by buying me a coffee!  This enables me to continue producing these podcasts, as it will go towards covering the server and podcast platform licenses.   Not only is Nordic Walking a whole body workout, but it is also one of the safest and most sociable way to exercise.  Classes always finish up in Final thank you to sponsorsSupport the showIf you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by buying me a coffee! In this week’s episode, I am talking to Sam Armstrong from Walx Derwent and Dales, in Derbyshire.  Sam had worked in the fitness industry for several years, when she discovered Nordic Walking.  Recognising the benefits that exercise outdoors had on physical and mental health she was inspired to set up her business and empower others in 2008.  Over the years, Sam’s love of walking has taken her all over Europe and the UK and last year, she qualified as a Mountain Leader. She has organised walking Festivals in the Peak District and is planning one with her colleague Nicola Sproson* from 6-8 May in the Lake District.  Sam is also a carer to her eldest daughter and she has kindly agreed to talk to me today, about how Nordic Walking helped her through the most difficult period of her life.*Nicola has been a guest TWICE on Walking on Air.  First time she spoke about adapting Nordic Walking for the Mountains and more recently, she informed us about Navigation for Nordic Walking.Sam's Website is: https://walx.co.uk/groups/walx-derwent-and-dales/Walx Ullswater Nordic Walking Festivalhttps://walx.co.uk/groups/walx-ullswater-festival/Find An Instructorhttps://britishnordicwalking.org.uk/apps/store-locatorIf you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by buying me a coffee!  This enables me to continue producing these podcasts, as it will go towards covering the server and podcast platform licenses.   Not only is Nordic Walking a whole body workout, but it is also one of the safest and most sociable way to exercise.  Classes always finish up in a cafe enjoying a coffee together.
