Al hit it big with the Nirvana parody in the last album, so how does he follow it up? A parody of Richard Harris' MacArthur Park of course! All of those 90s kids went crazy for MacArthur Park! Of course, it's a parody that directly references the biggest movie of 1993, and one of the biggest movies period. Alapalooza contains Al's hit single Jurassic Park, the RHCP pastiche Bedrock Anthem... along with fan favorites Frank's 2000" TV and Waffle King. It's not a perfect album, but there's a lot of merit to it and I was happy to talk about it. Joining me to talk about Alapalooza was my buddy Jason Gallagher! We had a great time! By the time the 90s hit, Al had a hard time finding his next big parody subject. He tried to beat the dead Michael Jackson horse again, but that didn't work out. Then, he asked Sir Paul McCartney permission, but was denied AGAIN. Things looked bleak... until a little known band from Seattle called Nirvana exploded onto the scene. Off The Deep End is Al's take on the grunge era of the 90s. Along with the iconic Nirvana, Al tackles the less iconic Milli Vanilli, New Kids on the Block, and Gerardo on this album. Some of it holds up, and some of it doesn't. But Mat Bradley-Tschirgi came on the podcast to talk about it with me and we had a good time!THEME SONG: Fun Zone by Your MotherAlso featured: Good Enough For Now by Marc With A CFollow me on Twitter! UHF was a huge flop, but it went on to become a beloved cult classic. The soundtrack? Ehhh, not so much. It's a mixed bag and doesn't feel like a complete album. But is it fair to write it off completely? No way! There's a lot of gold in here, and Zane Schacht and I discuss them all! From The Biggest Ball of Twine In Minnesota to Let Me Be Your Hog! We had a great conversation and it was a fun episode!THEME SONG: Fun Zone by Your MotherAlso featured: UHF by Metal AlFollow me on Twitter! Ever want to hear two drunk idiots cackle and lose their minds while they watch UHF? Now you can! Alex Fortin joined me for a UHF commentary. We barely talk about the movie. I just laugh over the jokes. And you don't learn anything interesting about the behind the scenes trivia. So if that sounds fun to you... then sync up the commentary track and let's watch it together!Follow me on Twitter! Polka Party wasn't the big hit that Al was hoping for. So following the disappointing release of that, he took time off of recording and came back BIG! Literally. Even Worse was the career revitalization that he was looking for. Featuring Fat, one of Al's most iconic parodies ever, along with several great originals. MaysunKay joined me to talk about this great album, and I had a wonderful conversation revisiting it. Even Worse? HARDLY! Following the success of Dare To Be Stupid comes the first "flop" of Al's career. Polka Party  wasn't the smash hit that Al's previous albums had been. With songs like Living With A Hernia, Here's Johnny, and Toothless People... it's not hard to see why it never reached the success that Eat It was. The album wasn't certified gold or platinum, and it led Al to believe that his career might be over. But is there more to this album than meets the eye? Wyatt and Ryan take a deep dive and find out!THEME SONG: Fun Zone by Your MotherAlso featured: Don't Wear Those Shoes by MC FrontalotFollow me on Twitter! When I started this podcast, there was one Weird Al super fan that I KNEW I needed to speak with at some point. Nathan Rabin. Nathan is a prolific pop culture critic and writer whose work includes Weird Al: The Book, The Weird Accordion To Al, and the upcoming The Weird-A-Coloring to Al which you can find at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/weirdaccordiontoal/the-weird-a-coloring-to-al-coloring-colored-in-booksNathan and I talked about his history with Weird Al, Garfield, ICP, and even Gallagher! It was a great conversation and I was thrilled to get him on the show.THEME SONG: Fun Zone by Your MotherAlso featured: I Lost On Jeopardy by mc chrisFollow me on Twitter! "Weird Al" Yankovic in 3D  was the album that broke new ground, and made Al an instant celebrity. How did he follow such a successful album? How about taking on DEVO? Or Huey Lewis  and the News? Even a Cyndi Lauper parody that Al was contractually obligated to do! Blake Roark and I discuss it in GREAT detail on today's Straight Outta Albuquerque! THEME SONG: Fun Zone by Your MotherFollow me on Twitter! For many years, Weird Al was known as the "Eat It Guy". This was the hugely successful and iconic album that started that. Wyatt takes a look at it with animator John Stratman! They talk about the big hits like Eat It and I Lost On Jeopardy, along with the beloved originals like Mr. Popeil and Midnight Star. For our first album retrospective, Wyatt was joined by comedian and writer Joe Rumrill! Wyatt and Joe took a look at Weird Al's debut album song by song. Covering everything from his catchy originals to his iconic parodies. And yes... we even talk about Gotta BoogieTHEME SONG: Fun Zone by Your MotherAlso featured: I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead by Worm QuartetFollow me on Twitter! In the first brief, catchup episode of Straight Outta Albuquerque... Wyatt explores Al Yankovic's early life and career. How he got the name "Weird Al", his first time meeting Dr. Demento, and the lunch meat inspired single that became his first big hit. Everything leading up to his debut album in 1983...THEME SONG: Fun Zone by Your MotherAlso featured: You Make Me by Dino-MikeSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/wyattduncan)
