This was a great interview -- so glad Gates has a second season of this podcast! But, it would be a little helpful -- on the technical side -- if both people's mics were "normalized" for a more even level (without so many loud-to-quiet-to-loud-again uneven sound). Oh, and it took me about 10 minutes to realize the occasional soft "thud" I was hearing was Kate Mulgrew obviously pounding the table he was seated at for the interview -- my dog in the car (while listening) found the occasional thumping a bit much ;)
