Episode 67 The Omen (1976)

2024-05-0101:33:48

Oh man, it's time to do the Omen (1976). One of the most influential horror movies of the 70s, Richard Donner's film about US Ambassador, Robert Thorn, and his wife  raising the AntiChrist would set off a franchise that was revisited in 2024.  Running Scared co-hosts Jamie and Rob have a lot to say about dogs in horror movies, off-leash protocols, the logistics of hiring a nanny,  a spin on "the library scene", Jerry Goldsmith's score, and a whole lot more. Plus another Monster Metrics segment where we measure the dread factor, dog alert moments and anticipated scares per minute.Support the Show.Support or follow us on PatreonVisit our Patreon shop to purchase our jogcasts Email us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:X @runningscaredpdInstagram @runningscaredpodTikTok @runningscaredpodcast
"Ya so, it's a security guard job at an abandoned arcade where the ghosts of dead children possess animatronics and murder said security guards. When can you start?" A community... paralyzed by... what, we're not sure. Why haven't they condemned this place? That one patrol cop sure seems to know a lot about the missing children case and about the murdered security guards. Funny how they never investigate the place where they were murdered. Oh well. It's the movie adaptation of the game kids love to hide from their parents! Is a franchise a blessing or a burden? Running Scared co-hosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts take apart the latest edition in the Exorcist franchise and look at how it echoed and subverted the original classic film from 1973. It gets heated between Rob and Jamie when we ask the big questions. Was scripted racial tension edited out of the final cut? Did the opening scene echo the original or subvert it? Do our expectations bog down our read of this film, or are we looking for fan service? Does Priest "Wild Thing" Vaughn save the day in the ninth inning?  Or does it take a community of spiritual healers to take on Panzuzu? Why does Rob keep calling him Panzu and Blumhouse "Bloom house"? All will be answered but you must choose to listen!Support or follow us on Patreon: patreon.com/runningscaredEmail us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:X @runningscaredpdInstagram @runningscaredpodTikTok @runningscaredpodcastSupport the Show.Support or follow us on PatreonVisit our Patreon shop to purchase our jogcasts Email us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:X @runningscaredpdInstagram @runningscaredpodTikTok @runningscaredpodcast
Take the apocalyptic tone of a zombie film and swap in the unrelenting dread of demonic possessions and you have a starting point to enter the critically acclaimed When Evil Lurks (2023) by director Demián Rugna. TRIGGER WARNING. This film depicts violence towards children and child death. Our review discusses this aspect of the film. If this subject makes you uncomfortable, we warn that this film and review might not be something you want to listen to.Co-hosts Jamie Roberts and Robert Lendrum discuss the mechanics of the rules in this film, bodily fluids, you can't kill Aquaman with water, Ruiz the agitated landlord, the main character Pedro aka Yelly McYellerson aka Major Payne, worst sidekicks, plus Jamie tries to redeem himself on the One Line Challenge, another edition of Monster Metrics, and as always, the Running Scared Award. It all ends with a boil full of happiness for everyone.Support or follow us on Patreon: patreon.com/runningscaredEmail us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:X @runningscaredpdInstagram @runningscaredpodTikTok @runningscaredpodcastSupport the Show.Support or follow us on PatreonVisit our Patreon shop to purchase our jogcasts Email us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:X @runningscaredpdInstagram @runningscaredpodTikTok @runningscaredpodcast
Happy Holidays Scaredy Cats! For this year's holiday pod, cohosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts lean into action thriller and Christmas classic Die Hard 2 (1990) starring Bruce Willis as John McClane. We enter the debate surrounding this film's status as a Christmas movie, discuss the everyman vs. the supermen, air traffic safety mishaps, how not to exchange gifts in public if you're evil, naked Tae Bo, and we compare this film and the villains to it's predecessor. It's the action packed, murderous and R rated version of Home Alone!  Support or follow us on Patreon: patreon.com/runningscaredAnd visit the shop to purchase our jogcasts including our latest "The Belly"Visit our website: runningscaredmedia.comEmail us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:X @runningscaredpdInstagram @runningscaredpodTikTok @runningscaredpodcastSupport the Show.Support or follow us on PatreonVisit our Patreon shop to purchase our jogcasts Email us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:X @runningscaredpdInstagram @runningscaredpodTikTok @runningscaredpodcast
Uh oh. Co-hosts, Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts disagree on the realism of the teenage horror drama "Talk to Me". Twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou make their directorial debut on this highly praised modern-day take on the ouija board, in which teens use the severed hand of a median to get high and converse with the dead! We ask the tough questions: does this film propagate a stereotype of stupid teenagers? Do they have a plan? Did Jamie ever have a plan during his teenage antics? Is this the worst dog in horror movie history? How will they franchise this story? Plus we take another look at the numbers in our new segment Monster Metrics! Happy Halloween Scaredy Cats! After a little break, The Running Scared boys are back with a film that's all about parenting by the book - it's just the worst book you could possibly parent by: the  Babadook (2014)! In this episode we tackle the state of masculinity in Australia, kids with high anxiety, unhelpful school administrators, house painting and hanging pictures, bedtime book choices and opportunistic f@*k bois like Robbie.  Plus, our reviews always give you the eyeball test, but now we're going to look at the numbers as we introduce a brand new segment: Monster Metrics! Co-hosts Jamie and Rob but heads over the  genre mashup film "As Above So Below". A 2014 John Erick Dowdle film, it combines a little Blair Witch handheld horror, with a sprinkle of Harry Potter magic with a few heaping table spoons of Indiana Jones mystery and adventure to cook up a unique, although somewhat muddy, voyage into the gates of Hell under the Paris Catacombs. What genre does this film lean on the most and does it succeed? Is the lead character a charming female Indiana Jones or a narcissist who puts others in constant danger? When does the supernatural stuff start in this film and why? Who the hell is Zed?! Is the handheld horror movie genre over? Will Rob pronounce "Iran" properly by the end of the pod? You might want to stand on your head while listening to this one because it's about to get inverted in ʍolǝq oS ǝʌoq∀ s∀. Sean S. Cunningham's 1980 "Friday the 13th" was a slasher in the ilk of Halloween. Could the creators possibly have known that they were embarking on a franchise that would take the iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, to New York City, the midwest, space and even Hell? We go back to the film that started it all and ask the big questions;  Why do small town folk always turn to look at the new person who enters the restaurant? How did Crazy Ralph get into the pantry? We explore Mrs. Voorhees motivation. Is Pamela Voorhees a trained assassin? Let's discuss the leadership skills of Steve, the camp manager. We put forth a new theory about the origin of Jason Voorhees.Visit our website:runningscaredmedia.comSupport us on Patreon:patreon.com/runningscaredEmail us at:therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us on Twitter @runningscaredpdon Instagram @runningscaredpodSupport the Show.Support or follow us on PatreonVisit our Patreon shop to purchase our jogcasts Email us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:X @runningscaredpdInstagram @runningscaredpodTikTok @runningscaredpodcast

Episode 55 Pandorum (2009)

2023-08-0801:11:50

If humanity has to leave Earth in search of a new home are we still human when we get to our destination? We guess that's the question that the sci-fi horror Pandorum (2009) is asking... or maybe it's what happens if you add the biker guys from Mad Max: Fury Road to Event Horizon? This genre bending mashup of horror, 90s video games, hockey pads and blue neon has co-hosts Jamie Roberts and Rob Lendrum trading jabs as they debate the onion peel story arch, the casting and the characters. What if Norman Reedus had been the star? Why is there no checklist available when waking up from hyper sleep? Why do sci-fi movies always place the hyper sleep pods upright? Does this film depict the worst possible way to wake up? It's a teenage boy from the 90s' wet dream as our hero, a hot babe and a kung fu master battle mutants in a metal death trap in space (or is it???)! Director/Producer Elizabeth Banks takes us back to a simpler time in American history when there were no cell phones, cocaine was delivered by plane and bears ruled with an iron fist. Based on a true story, Cocaine Bear (2023)  posits that if there is anything worse than  encountering a bear in the wild, it's encountering a cocaine bear in the wild. An impressive cast, a great concept, but do we get the gore and over-the-top  comedy we are hoping for? Co-hosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts go nose deep into a creature feature that tries to find the balance between laughs and lacerations. Plus, Jamie tells a few bear stories of his own.Support us on Patreon:patreon.com/runningscaredEmail us at:therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us on Twitter @runningscaredpdon Instagram @runningscaredpodSupport the Show.Support or follow us on PatreonVisit our Patreon shop to purchase our jogcasts Email us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:X @runningscaredpdInstagram @runningscaredpodTikTok @runningscaredpodcast
Let's face it. You can't say no to those 1979 haunted house prices. 80K for a waterfront 4 bedroom with a guest house? If you ever wonder how characters stick it out so long in films like "The Amityville Horror" (1979), it's because you can't find houses that cheap!  We contrast the film with the Conjuring and ask the big questions like why don't paranormal investigators have dogs? What's up with the blood soup club in the basement?  Does Lois Lane need to practice ballet in her lingerie before bed? What purpose does the cop serve? How much wood did Brolin have to chop to make this film? Running Scared co-hosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts dive into this horror classic that set the standard for haunted house movies including an amazing performance by Rod Steiger. When there's something strange in your shitty, auction bought, ramshackle house, who you gonna call? 2 weirdos who call themselves "Demonologists" and no one thinks that's odd. Blockbuster Director James Wan brings us the haunted house thriller "The Conjuring" (2013) starring Vera Farmiga, Lili Taylor, Patrick Wilson and Ron Livingston. A truly scary film that kicked off a franchise, this one actually chills co-hosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts. We ask, does anyone think these guys are fakes? Would Christian faith make this film extra scary? Have we ever had a supernatural experience? Are all ghosts malicious or are there helpful ghosts? Why do demonologists keep so many creepy bobbleheads? Rob tells the story about how he almost put a stake through an imaginary prankster. Join us for the chiller by the river! It's our 50th episode!  We celebrate our milestone by returning to the movie that has not only consumed our lives by inspiring this podcast, but also regurgitated our friendship. That's right, we're doing Anaconda (1997) AGAIN. But this time, co-hosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts have brought along the very funny and intelligent Miles Klee of Rolling Stone magazine as our special guest to deconstruct the madness of Jon Voight's performance as Paul Serone. Plus, we brainstorm what a prequel (or requel) of Anaconda would look like with our own mock trailer. Finally, we create the definitive drinking game bingo card for your next Anaconda viewing party. Find out who wins the Running Scared Award in our favourite horror cult classic.Read Miles Klee's article about Anaconda:melmagazine.com/en-us/story/jon-voight-anacondaSupport us on Patreon:patreon.com/runningscaredEmail us at:therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us on Twitter @runningscaredpdon Instagram @runningscaredpodSupport the Show.Support or follow us on PatreonVisit our Patreon shop to purchase our jogcasts Email us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:X @runningscaredpdInstagram @runningscaredpodTikTok @runningscaredpodcast

Those loveable chest burstin' Xenomorphs are back and so is the Running Scared Podcast with back-to-back episodes on the Alien franchise. This time around, we dive into the blockbuster masterpiece that is James Cameron's Aliens. A special effects tour de force, Aliens cranks up the bad ass meter on Sigourney Weaver's Ripley while echoing the original film with a few nice twists. Is Ripley's dream sequence imagined or is it somehow real? Where did Newt poop? Vasquez is a fashion icon.  Hudson is the most easily wound up  depression leader.  Support us on Patreon:patreon.com/runningscaredEmail us at:therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us on Twitter @runningscaredpdon Instagram @runningscaredpodSupport the Show.Support or follow us on PatreonVisit our Patreon shop to purchase our jogcasts Email us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:X @runningscaredpdInstagram @runningscaredpodTikTok @runningscaredpodcast

Oh Captain, my captain! Why do you suck so bad, Captain Dallas? Running Scared hosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts interrogate the sci-fi horror classic Alien (1979) and have a lot to say about the leadership of this mission. Who would you rather have in the chair for this mission? What seeds were laid in this film that gave birth to a franchise? Why do they care about that cat so much? Everyone has that one buddy who loves his team a little too much, but that buddy isn't Robert Di Nero. In Tony Scott's 1996 thriller The Fan,  Di Nero channels some of his past performances as unstable toxic males and overpowers the film in a rare case of the actor's feet being too big for the role's shoes. Although the thrills might not hit the heights of Willie Mays Hayes scoring from second on a bunt, the Running Scared boys review is sure to please as we call in a designated hitter for a little help: Winston McMartin of The Dark Side of Sport podcast. Together we ask the hardball questions like how does Gil have such incredible access to the team? Does Tony Scott know anything about baseball? Why did John Kruk have to die? Who paid for this soundtrack? Did Major League steal the ending they wanted for this movie? It's the episode that will have you running around third and coming home to score.   Support us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/runningscaredEmail us at:therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us on Twitter @runningscaredpdon Instagram @runningscaredpodon TikTok @runningscaredmediaSupport the Show.Support or follow us on PatreonVisit our Patreon shop to purchase our jogcasts Email us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:X @runningscaredpdInstagram @runningscaredpodTikTok @runningscaredpodcast

Poor Tess is cold, wet and just wants to put her head down and get some zzzs. But some weird dude is in her AirBnB. So, she does what we would all do, kick him to the couch and sleep in his bed. Nothing could go wrong, right? Written and directed by Zach Cregger, Barbarian (2022) is a scary hit that puts the ick back in incest. Running Scared co-hosts Rob and Jamie ask the big questions; Do medical conventions saturate the hotel and AirBnB inventory in Detroit? Does incest give you super powers? Can you rent out a torture sex dungeon? It's the film that certaintly doesn't help the reputation of AirBnB. As a gift to our Patreon members, we dropped this episode a couple weeks back. Now it's here for all to enjoy, catch it if you can! And if you ever do catch this straight to DVD flick, stomp it into oblivion and sweep the crumbs away because we struggled to find anything redeeming about GingerDeadMan (2005).  Gary Busey stars in this puzzling episode of the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers where a baker and her frenemies take on a pschyopathic ginger bread man containing the soul of the killer of her father and brother. It all takes place in 2 locations! Is this movie at least funny? How did this spawn two sequels? Three scoops of murder victims courtesy of Michael Myers, Blumhouse Productions and the boys at Running Scared as we review the entire Halloween trilogy; Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021) and Halloween Ends (2022). Had the Halloween franchise gone off the rails and does Blumhouse get it back on? Does this hang together as a trilogy? Is it wise to put Michael Myers on a school bus? Do the rules of Requels bog down a movie - ie. bringing back the legacy cast? How closely was this trilogy meant to mirror the latest Star Wars films?
